Ann notes of her photo:

"Looking south to the Summer Isles, An Teallach and the Torridon Hills and on a clear day the Cuillin in Skye are clearly visible 65 miles away. 25 miles by road northwest of Ullapool, Polbain, Achiltibuie and the other villages on the Coigach peninsula enjoy some of the most spectacular views anywhere in the highlands."

Polbain or "The white pool" is on the shore across from the largest of the Summer Isles, Tanera Mor. Andrew Moir today lives at Polbain, and his webpage includes photos! (CONTACT INFO)

As well as the families below, there were christenings at Polbain;

The Dundee Courier, 30 April, 1883, notes marriage;

"At 25 Chester Street, Edinburgh, on the 27th April, by the Rev. Mr McKinnon, Andrew Kettles, hedger, Abercairny, Crieff, to Catherine McLeod, Polbain, Ullapool, Ross-shire."

Polbain 41-1

Katherine do 60

Margaret do 25
Olifher(sp?) do 35
Notes on this Household:

All were born in Ross and Cromarty. The surname of Olifher is illegible, and I might have mistranscribed his forename.

Have not yet identified these people in later censuses.

Mary do 4
Notes on this Household:

All were born in Ross and Cromarty.

In the 1851 census this family is at Polbain 51-25.

Abigail, "Abby" above, dies 1862 at Polbain. The registration notes her parents had been Donald MacLeod and Ann, maiden surname MacLeod, both then deceased.

Daughter Mary is in the 1861 census at Polbain 61-4, married to Murdoch MacLeod.

I think this family was originaly from Badentarbet. The Parish Register records the christening 16 November, 1828 at Badentarbet of a son Hector to a father Murdoch McLeod, Hector was with them in the 1841 census. Memorial stone for son Angus suggests the father of Murdoch above was another Hector.

Memorial stone for the death of young Angus in 1875 notes him as "Mac mhurcaidh mhic eachainn", which translates as "son of Murdoch, who was son of Hector", indicating the father of Murdoch above was a Hector.

Murdoch do 6
Notes on this Household:

All were born in Ross and Cromarty. Murdoch listed as a Chelsea Pensioner. In the 1851 Census at Polbain 51-26 Murdoch is listed as "Pensioner (Army of 42 Highlanders.)"

Allana McLean (CONTACT INFO) in Toronto is descended from Murdoch through Chirsty above. Allana has had the records searched at Kew to find Murdoch MacLeod's discharge papers, she says they are fascinating, and even include his physical description!

Although this census lists Murdoch as born in the County of Ross and Cromarty, the 1851 census has him born at Assynt in Sutherlandshire, and his discharge papers say he was born at Dornoch in Sutherlandshire!

Murdoch died 4 October, 1856 at Polbain (reg#56). He was listed as a 76 year old Widower and Pensioner. He suffered from Asthma his last ten years. His parents were listed in his death registration as Donald McLeod, Tenant (Deceased), and Ann McLeod, Maiden name Macleod (Deceased). The Informant was listed as; Murdoch Macleod Son (Present) [signed]

Daughters Elizabeth and Christina ("Chirsty" above) married brothers and lived all their lives in Polbain. Christina is Allana's gt-gt-grandmother. Allana says Christina married in 1844 at Dorney to Roderick MacLeod, who was a tailor three Households away in this census at Polbain 41-6. Cannot see the families of Christina or Elizabeth in the 1851 census, but by 1861 Christina is Widowed with children at Polbain 61-1, and Elizabeth with her family is in the next Household at Polbain 61-2.

Murdoch's daughter Hughina was christened at Badenscally 8 February 1830, she married 28 December, 1854 to Murdoch MacLean at Altandhu (see Altandhu 51-104). Hughina and Murdoch MacLean emigrated to New Zealand in 1858. A cousin of Allana named Ngaire Moffitt there has sent a copy of Hughina's death registration, as she died in New Zealand. The death registration gives her mother's maiden name as Kerr, so possibly Murdoch was married twice...

Another cousin of Allana in New Zealand is Margaret Ward (CONTACT INFO), Marg's grandmother Isabella though born in N.Z. was a daughter of Hughina who married John McDonald, an emigrant from Reiff!, see Reiff 61-23.

John do 4
Notes on this Household:

All were born in Ross and Cromarty.

The Parish Register includes the marriage of Hector McKenzie of Isle Ristol to Janet McDonald from Reiff 12 March, 1830. Janet's family is in this census at Reiff 41-18. The Reiff McDonalds include some of my own ancestors, so I would welcome any input on Hector and Janet's family; CONTACT INFO.

This family moves to Balintore in Easter Ross sometime after birth of a fifth child in 1844, and before the 1851 census, the connection to the Reiff MacDonald family reinforced there as a grandson of Janet is noted in the 1871 census as "Herd Boy" to the family of her niece Christina at Arboll. Descendants of the family are traced to the present day.

Janet dies 19 October, 1885 at Balintore, Fearn age listed as 84, Hector's death is registered as 23 January, 1890 at Balintore aged 86, son of Roderick McKenzie and Margaret maiden surname McKenzie, the 1881 census has him born at Lochinver, Assynt, which corresponds to the OPR index of a christening there 31 July, 1803.

Catharine do 35
Notes on this Household:

All were born in Ross and Cromarty.

Cannot see Roderick in the 1851 census, but in 1861 his Widow and children are at Polbain 61-1.

Allana McLean (CONTACT INFO) in Toronto is descended from Roderick. She says the birth registration of Roderick's son in 1855 states he married in 1844 at Dorney to Christina "Chirsty" McLeod, who is in this census at Polbain 41-3.

Catharine above was a sister of Roderick, another brother of these two married Elizabeth McLeod, sister of Roderick's wife Chirsty! Allana says both families lived all their lifes at Polbain.

Allana has not been able to find anything out about Roderick other than this listing in the 1841 Census, and that his death registration 23 April, 1860 gives cause of death as Consumption (T.B.) and lists his parents as having been Neil MacLeod and Catherine MacLeod (maiden name MacLeod). Allana has seen a Neil MacLeod listed in the O.P.R.'s who lived at Reiff and wonders if this was Roderick's father.

Isabella's 1869 death registration notes her parents had been Murdoch MacLeod and Betsy, Maiden Surnamed MacLeod.

In the 1851 census this family is at Polbain 51-37.

The Parish Register records the marriage 7 March, 1820 of "John MacLeod Tanaray" to "Anne Urquhart Ruiff".

John's death is registered as 1873 at Dornie, aged 75 years, married to Ann Urquhart, The registration notes his parents had been Roderick MacLeod and Margaret, Maiden Surname MacLeod. That couple are in this census at Tanera 41-1.

Donald do 6 months
Notes on this Household:

All were born in Ross and Cromarty.

In the 1851 census at Polbain 51-36 three children who should show up in this census are present; Murdo 20, Hector 17, and Catherine 16, my guess is though the ages do not quite match they were the three children of those names at Faochag; Hector at Faochag 41-21, a MacKenzie family with relationship not known, and Murdo and Catherine with Isabella's parents in the next Household at Faochag 41-22.

John and Isabella were ancestors of Jenny Self in Australia (CONTACT INFO) through their son Murdo (away from home this census) and his wife Isabella Campbell, who is in this census at Acheninver 41-3.

John and Isabella were also ancestors of Morag Kane through their son Alexander, who in 1877 marries his second cousin, Christina "Christy" McKenzie of Isle Tanera.

Isabella has two other siblings in this census; Duncan McKenzie in Reiff 41-5, and Janet Ross in Reiff 41-9. Another sibling, John McKenzie, emigrated in 1848 with his wife and three children, they were ancestors of the late Barbara Kolle of Melbourne.

Norman's death is registered 1878 at Isle Ristol, aged "73". The Registration says Mary was Maiden Surname MacLeod, and says Norman's parents had been Donald MacLeod and Esabella MacLeod.

The death of young Mary above was registered as 14 October, 1869 at Isle Ristol aged 33 years, unmarried. The registration states her mother's Maiden Surname as MacLeod. The Parish Register includes the marriage 29 February, 1828 of "Norman McLeod Altandow to Mary McMcLeod There".

Notes on this Household:

All except Murdo were born in Ross and Cromarty. No surname or ditto written for Angus, but the 1851 census confirms he was a son of Murdo and Aby.

In the 1851 census this family is at Polbain 51-40, that listing says Murdo was born in Ross and Cromarty!

Roderick's death is registered as unmarried 1866 at Polbain aged 32 years. The registration notes his parents as Murdoch McLeod and Abigail, Maiden Surname McLeod, deceased.

Notes on this Household:

Both were born in Ross and Cromarty.

By time of the 1851 census Jannet has died, and James is with his wife Barbara and three children at Polbain 51-38.

The Parish Register records the marriage 23 December, 1847 of James McLeod a Crofter resident at Polbain to Barbara Morrison resident at Kanlochbuie, daughter of Angus Morrison there (I am unfamiliar with the place, but the 1851 census gives her birth place as in the Parish od Edrachilles, SutherlandShire).

Notes on this Household:

All were born in Ross and Cromarty.

In the 1851 census at Polbain 51-42 Alexander and Mary are missing (dead?), and John and Isabella "Bell" are parents of five children.

John's death is registered 1880 at Polbain, Isabella "Bell" still alive then shown to have maiden surname McLean, his parents noted as having been Alexander McLeod and Mary, maiden surname McLean. Informant his son Kenneth.

The death of Isabella is registered in 1890 at Polbain aged 77 years, Widow of John MacLeod, her parents noted as having been John MacLean and Maggie, maiden surname MacKenzie, Informant her son Kenneth. The parents names and her age show her to be a daughter of a family at Altandhu, her mother Margaret one of the large MacKenzie of Reiff family, that Margaret died 1855, Registrations that year include childrens names and ages which confirms Isabella as a daughter. Isabella's parents with other relatives are in this census at Altandhu 41-17.

Ann do 6 months
Notes on this Household:

All were born in Ross and Cromarty. No surname or ditto written for Murdoch, but I assume him to be a child of this family. Mary's age was written in the "Male" column, and the enumeration counted her that way, clearly a transcription error I think!

In the 1851 census this family is at Polbain 51-44.

The Parish Register has the marriage 22 December, 1813 of Finlay Shaw Tanary, and Eric McLennan there.

Young Ann is a daughter of Roderick and Mary, she shows up in the 1851 census as a servant to the MacLeod family at Polbain 51-38. Interesting that the civil registration of three of Roderick and Mary's children list Mary's maiden surname also as Shaw! I am uncertain which of Roderick or Mary is the daughter of Finlay and Henny.

Roderick is missing in the 1851 census, but Mary along with three children, is at Polbain 51-43.

Sometime before the 1851 census a daughter of Finlay and Henny, Sarah, marries Kenneth MacLean from Altandhu, they are then with her parents, and a nine month old son, Kenneth is in this census with his family at Altandhu 41-9.

Cannot see the younger Roderick in the 1851 census, but in 1861 he is at Polbain 61-22, married with six children. Similarly, Murdoch is missing in 1851, but in 1861 is married with three sons at Polbain 61-24.

Notes on this Household:

This Household is on page 7 of Enumeration District #. All marked as born at Lochbroom.

In the 1841 census this family was at Polbain 41-2, in 1861 they are at Polbain 61-7.

Notes on this Household:

This Household is on page 7 of Enumeration District #. All marked as born at Lochbroom, except Murdoch born at Assynt in SutherlandShire.

In the 1841 Census this family was at Polbain 41-3.

Murdoch is a gt-gt-gt-grandfather of Allana McLean (CONTACT INFO) in Toronto through his daughter Christina "Chirsty", who is not present in this census. Allana has done much research on this family and provided most of the following details.

The 1841 census lists Murdoch as born in the County of Ross and Cromarty, this census has him born at Assynt in Sutherlandshire, and his discharge papers say he was born at Dornoch in Sutherlandshire!

The Informant was listed as "Murdoch Macleod Son (Present) [signed]"

Chirsty married in 1844 to Roderick MacLeod, who was a tailor 26 years older than her, his place of residence listed as Dorney though in the 1841 census he was at Polbain 41-6 with his sister Catharine. Allana has not been able to find anything further about Roderick yet. In 1861 Chirsty is Widowed with four sons at Polbain 61-1.

Allana says Chirsty's sister Elizabeth (not present in this census) married John McLeod, brother of Chirsty's husband Roderick! Elizabeth with family is in the 1861 census next to Chirsty at Polbain 61-2.

Another daughter of Murdoch, Hughina, married 28 December, 1854 to Murdoch MacLean at Altandhu (see Altandhu 51-104). Hughina and Murdoch MacLean emigrate to New Zealand in 1858. A cousin of Allana named Ngaire Moffitt there has sent a copy of Hughina's death registration, as she died in New Zealand. The death registration gives her mother's maiden name as Kerr. Hughina's descendants in N.Z. also include my cousin Margaret Ward (CONTACT INFO).

Margaret, "Peggy" above, marries 21 January, 1856 at Ullapool to Murdoch Shaw also from Polbain (son of Finlay Shaw and Eric, maiden surname MacLennan). Cannot see Murdoch n this census, but his family is at Polbain 51-44. In 1861 Peggy and Murdoch are at Polbain 61-24.

26 March, 1857 young Donald marries Catherine McLeod. They are in the 1861 census in the neighbouring community at Dornie 61-3. With them and two young children there are Donald's then still unmarried brother Murdoch (young Murdo above, Informant of their father's death), and a 25 year old niece Margaret, most likely the 15 year old servant above.

Notes on this Household:

This Household is on pages 7 and 8 of Enumeration District #. All marked as born at Lochbroom.

In the 1841 census this family was at Polbain 41-8. With them then was a son Alexander, who has since married, and is now in the next Household; Polbain 51-28.

Neil's death is registered as 26 March, 1861 at Polbain, aged 82 years, married to Isabella MacLeod, his parents noted as having been Alexander MacKenzie and Mary, maiden surname Ross, Informant his son Donald. His sister Ann is in this census at Altandhu 51-106.

Donald marries Ann Campbell from Gairloch, and in the 1861 census Isabella is living with Donald, his wife, and their three children at Polbain 61-5.

Isabella dies 15 May, 1869, aged "96 years". The registration notes her parents had been Murdoch MacLeod and Betsy, maiden surnamed MacLeod.

Notes on this Household:

This Household is on page 8 of Enumeration District #. All marked as born at Lochbroom.

In the 1841 census Alexander was living with his parents at Polbain 41-8. His parents and two of his siblings are in this census in the previous Household; Polbain 51-27.

In the 1861 census this family is at Polbain 61-6, next to the home of Alexander's then Widowed mother Isabella, who is with the family of his brother Donald at Polbain 61-5.

Catharine's maiden surname (given in the birth of a daughter in 1856) was MacLeod.

Since the 1841 census at Polbain 41-9 George's mother Mary has died. In 1861 they are at Polbain 61-8, that census has a 39 year old brother of George named Angus, which I think is a mistaken notation for the nephew above.

Notes on this Household:

This Household is on page 8 of Enumeration District #. All marked as born at Lochbroom, except Jessy born at Gairloch.

In the 1841 census this family was at Badentarbet 41-14. Janet "Jessy" and two of her children are in the 1861 census at Polbain 61-9. Roderick is two crofts away then at Polbain 61-11.

The death is registered 1876 at Polbain of John, the registration notes parents were John MacDonald, letter carrier, and Jessie, maiden surname Campbell.

The O.P.R. includes mention of marriage 21 February, 1820 of John McDonald Tanaray to Janet Campbell Dornie. I am sure that refers to this family, as by time of the 1871 census Janet is at Polbain 71-14, with the next household (on the same lot perhaps?) containing only an unmarried woman, named Margaret Campbell.

The Parish Register includes christenings of two of the children above, both with father's residence as "Badentarbet";

  1. John, christened 4 February, 1821,
  2. Isabella, christened 7 December, 1826.

The next Household, Polbain 51-31, has only an unmarried George Campbell, born at Gairloch like Jessy above, I suspect they were brother and sister. The 1864 Death registration of George says their parents had been John Campbell and Christina, Maiden Surname Kerr.

Polbain 51-31

George Campbell Head U. 55 Crofter of about 2 1/2 Acres
Notes on this Household:

This Household is on page 8 of Enumeration District #. George is marked as born at Gairloch.

The previous Household, Polbain 51-30, has Jessy Campbell born at Gairloch like George above, I think George's sister. In the 1861 census George is with an unmarried sister Margaret at Polbain 61-10, with Jessy's family as one neighbour, and the family of Jessy's son on the other.

George's 1864 death registration says his parents had been John Campbell and Christina, Maiden Surname Kerr.

Notes on this Household:

This Household is on page 8 of Enumeration District #. Both marked as born at Lochbroom.

Cannot yet see this couple in the 1841 census, but in 1861 they are at Polbain 61-12.

John's death is registered as 9 August, 1869 at Polbain, aged 82 years, husband of Mary Fraser. The registration notes his parents had been Kenneth McLean and Catherine, Maiden Surname not known to the Informant, John Ross, the Inspector of the Poor.

Chirsty Do Wife Mar 28
Notes on this Household:

This Household is on page 9 of Enumeration District #. Both marked as born at Lochbroom.

Murdoch is a son of Isabella (MacLeod) in the next Household, Polbain 51-35. In the 1841 census he was with his McKenzie family at Badentarbet 41-9.

Chirsty was a Morrison, in the 1841 census she was with her family at Badentarbet 41-2. Her parents and other relatives are in this census at Achnahaird 51-60.

In the 1861 census Murdoch has died, and Chirsty (as "Christina") is at Polbain 61-15 with her daughter, and her mother Isabella Morrison.

The Parish Register records the marriage 18 January, 1850 of Murdoch McKenzie, a Labourer at Polbain, to Christina Morrison of Achnahaird, her father's name disapears into the fold of the page, but his residence was also given as Achnahaird.

In the 1841 census this family was at Badentarbet 41-9. Isabella's husband Murdoch MacKenzie was alive then. Also with them then was a son Murdoch, who is in this census as Head of the previous Household, Polbain 51-34.

Angus dies 1869, his death registration shows his mother, Isabella above, was Maiden Surname MacLeod.

By time of the 1861 census;

Alexander and Jemima are ancestors of Sally Ann Heys in Australia. Sally Ann has done lots of research on the descendants of this family, and has a great webpage; (CONTACT INFO).

In this census Alexander's future wife Jemima is servant to a McKenzie family at Dornie 51-48. Her parents are in this census at Badenscallie 51-32.

Notes on this Household:

This Household is on page 9 of Enumeration District #. All marked as born at Lochbroom, except John who was born at Assynt.

In the 1841 census this family was at Polbain 41-12. Three of the children above who should have shown up in the 1841 census, Murdo, Hector, and Catherine were not with their parents, my guess is though the ages do not quite match they were the three children of those names in the 1841 census at Faochag; Hector at Faochag 41-21, a MacKenzie family with relationship not known, and Murdo and Catherine with Isabella's parents in the next Household at Faochag 41-22. Isabella's mother has died since the last census, but her father Roderick is with her brother Hugh's Household at Faochag 41-65.

In 1861 this family is at Polbain 61-16.

John and Isabella were ancestors of Jenny Self in Australia (CONTACT INFO) through their son Murdo and his wife Isabella Campbell, who is in this census at Acheninver 51-13.

John and Isabella were also ancestors of Morag Kane through their son Alexander, who in 1877 marries his second cousin, Christina "Christy" McKenzie of Isle Tanera, born soon after this census, they are the ancestors of Morag Kane.

Isabella has siblings Duncan McKenzie at Reiff 51-71, and Janet McKenzie (Widow of Hugh Ross) at Reiff 51-80, another sibling, John McKenzie, emigrated in 1848 with his wife and three children, they were ancestors of the late Barbara Kolle of Melbourne.

John's death is registered as 1873 at Dornie, aged 75 years, married to Ann Urquhart, The registration notes his parents had been Roderick MacLeod and Margaret, Maiden Surname MacLeod. That couple were in the 1841 census at Tanera 41-1.

This Household is on page 10 of Enumeration District #. All marked as born at Lochbroom. Handwriting of parents ages is indistinct, though I think my transcription correct.

In the 1841 census this family was at Polbain 41-14, that census says Murdoch was not born in the County, and when they appear in the 1861 census at Polbain 61-19, with Abie is marked as born at Assynt!

Roderick's death is registered as unmarried 1866 at Polbain aged 32 years. The registration notes his parents as Murdoch McLeod and Abigail, Maiden Surname McLeod, deceased.

Catherine has death registered 1868 at Polbain, aged 26 years, unmarried, parents Murdoch and Abigail both then deceased. Informant of the death was her aunt, Christina McLeod, likely that is the Chirsty in the neighbouring Household, Polbain 51-41, but it is not certain if Chirsty was sister of Murdoch or of Abigail.

A daughter of this family, Anne, has death registered as 1866 at Polbain, aged 29 years. The registration notes her parents as Murdoch McLeod and Abigail, Maiden Surname McLeod, deceased.

Chirsty in the following Household, Polbain 51-41, was a sister of Murdoch.

Notes on this Household:

This Household is on page 11 of Enumeration District #. All marked as born at Lochbroom.

Mary and her now missing husband Roderick were in the 1841 census at Polbain 41-19. A daughter of theirs, Anne, is servant to the MacLeod family at Polbain 51-38.

In the 1861 census this family is at Polbain 61-25, one of six Shaw Households in Polbain that year!

According to the civil registrations of three of their children born after 1855 Mary's maiden surname was also Shaw! Finlay and Henny Shaw in the next Household, Polbain 51-44, are parents of either Roderick or Mary.

                       End of Polbane
Notes on this Household:

This Household is on pages 11 and 12 of Enumeration District #. All marked as born at Lochbroom, except Henny, who was born at Parish of Uig, and Sally MacLeod born at Assynt.

In the 1841 census this family was listed at Polbain 41-19.

Kenneth was from Altandhu, he was in the 1841 census with his family (his mother Maiden Surname was also MacLean) at Altandhu 41-9, his family is in this census at Altandhu 51-100 with a four year old son of his, John.

The Parish Register has the marriage 22 December, 1813 of Finlay Shaw Tanary, and Eric McLennan there ("Eric", "Henny", "Euphemia", and "Henrietta" were all variations of the same name).

In the previous Household at Polbain 51-43 either Mary, Or her now missing husband Roderick, is a child of Finlay and Henny above; they were both with them in the 1841 census, and both were surnamed Shaw!

In 1861 at Polbain the third Household, and all the five Households from 22 to 26 have Shaws;

Polbain 61-1

Murdoch McIver Lodger Un. 53 Pauper, Idiotic
Notes on this Household:

This Household is on page 1 of Enumeration District #1. All marked as born in Coigach.

Cannot find this family in the 1851 census, though Christina "Chirsty" was in 1841 with her family at Polbain 41-3, and her husband-to-be, Roderick, was then with a sister at Polbain 41-6.

In 1871 Christina with two sons is at Polbain 71-9.

Christina was a gt-grandmother of Allana McLean (CONTACT INFO) through her son Murdoch above. Allana has provided lots of info on this family!

Roderick's death was registered as 23 April, 1860, cause of death as Consumption (T.B.) and lists his parents as having been Neil MacLeod and Catherine MacLeod (maiden name MacLeod). Allana has seen a Neil MacLeod listed in the O.P.R.'s who lived at Reiff and wonders if this was Roderick's father. I think it more likely the father was the "Nial Macleod" listed in the 1798 Militia List as living at Badentarbat.

Civil Registration of the birth of Neil 14 May, 1855 shows his father was Roderick McLeod, and his mother Christina's maiden surname was also McLeod, that registration says they were married 1844 at Dorney, and that Roderick who was 26 years older than Christina was a Tailor.

Young Donald dies 15 March, 1869, his occupation like his father had been noted as Tailor. The death registration confirms Christina was Maiden Surname MacLeod.

I suspect Murdoch McIver angered the enumerator, the word "Idiotic" has been circled three times!

Christina's sister Hughina married 28 December, 1854 to Murdoch MacLean at Altandhu and emigrated to New Zealand in 1858. Hughina's descendants in N.Z. include my cousin Margaret Ward (CONTACT INFO).

Eliza McLeod in the next Household, Polbain 61-2, is a sister of Christina, and Eliza'a husband John was a brother of Christina's husband Roderick!

Two brothers of Christina, Donald and Murdoch, are in this census with other relatives in the neighbouring community at Dornie 61-3.

Notes on this Household:

This Household is on page 1 of Enumeration District #1. All marked as born in Coigach.

In 1851 John with his sisters Ann and Anabella, and a niece Ann Campbell, was at Polbain 51-24. Cannot see Elisabeth then, but in 1841 she was with her family at Polbain 41-3.

In 1871 John and Elisabeth with six children are at Polbain 71-10, with John's sisters Ann and Annabella in the next Household at Polbain 71-11. Probably the two Households were on the same croft.

Civil Registration shows John McLeod married Elisebeth McLeod 19 March, 1857. Also recorded is the birth of Catherine 22 December, 1859 and a son Neil, 12 August, 1859. I think that Neil died young, and the Nephew Neil above was born 22 August, 1859 to Donald McLeod and Jane McLeod, not certain but likely that George was also a son of that couple.

The Widow Christina McLeod in the previous Household, Polbain 61-1, was married to Roderick McLeod, a brother of Elisabeth's husband John! Christina was an ancestor of Allana MacLean of Toronto (CONTACT INFO), who has contributed much of the info on this family.

Elisabeth's sister Hughina married 28 December, 1854 to Murdoch MacLean at Altandhu and emigrated to New Zealand in 1858. Hughina's descendants in N.Z. include my cousin Margaret Ward (CONTACT INFO).

Two brothers of Elisabeth, Donald and Murdoch, are in this census with other relatives in the neighbouring community at Dornie 61-3.

Notes on this Household:

This Household appears in Enumeration District 2, page 2. They were all marked as born at Coigach.

In the 1851 census this family was at Polbain 51-44 with Sally's Shaw parents and her siblings. In this census the last five Polbain Households, from 22 to 26, all include Shaw relatives of Sally! Her parents are at Polbain 61-23.

In the 1871 census Kenneth and Sally with six sons are at Polbain 71-27.

Kenneth was from Altandhu, his parents and two of his siblings are in this census at Altandhu 61-15, sisters Mary MacLeod at Altandhu 61-16 and Catherine Macleod at Altandhu 61-22, and brothers Duncan McLean at Altandhu 61-17 and Donald McLean at Reiff 61-2.

Notes on this Household:

This Household appears in Enumeration District 2, page 2. They were all marked as born at Coigach.

Cannot yet clearly see Murdoch in earlier censuses. In 1851 Mary was with her parents at Polbain 51-25, they with other of her relatives are in this census at Polbain 61-7. This family is in the 1871 census at Polbain 71-7. Based on the data that follows I think the age of Sibella is mistranscribed, that it should be "1" rather than "7".

The death of one and a quarter year old Angus is registered as 10 April, 1863 at Polbain, with parents Murdoch MacLeod and Mary, Maiden Surname MacLeod.

The Civil Registration Index shows the marriage 12 January, 1859 of Murdoch McLeod to Mary McLeod in Lochbroom Parish, and the births of seven children at Lochbroom to that couple;

  1. Sibella, born 21 March, 1860,
  2. Angus, born 18 January, 1862, died 10 April, 1863 at Polbain,
  3. Elizabeth, born 3 March, 1864,
  4. Abigail, born 18 November, 1865,
  5. Angus, born 18 October, 1867,
  6. Ann, born 20 January, 1869,
  7. Mary, born 3 January, 1872.

Notes on this Household:

This Household appears in Enumeration District 2, page 2. They were all marked as born at Coigach, except Ann born at Gairloch.

In the 1851 census this family was at Polbain 51-27 with Donald's then living father Neil as Head of Household. By 1871 at Polbain 71-12 Donald and Ann are alone with their daughter "Bell" (Isabella above)

Donald's father Neil died shortly before this census, 26 March, 1861 at Polbain, aged 82 years, married to Isabella MacLeod, his parents noted as having been Alexander MacKenzie and Mary, maiden surname Ross, Informant his son Donald. His sister Ann is in this census at Altandhu 61-5.

Isabella (the mother) dies 15 May, 1869, aged "96 years", Informant her granddaughter the young Christy above. The registration notes her parents had been Murdoch MacLeod and Betsy, maiden surnamed MacLeod.

The birth registrations of three of their children show Ann's maiden surname was Campbell.

Alexander McKenzie in the next Household, Polbain 61-6, is a brother of Donald.

This Household appears in Enumeration District 2, pages 2 and 3. They were all marked as born at Coigach.

In the 1851 census this family was at Polbain 51-28, in 1871 they are at Polbain 71-8.

The registration of young Catherine's birth 11 May, 1856 gives her mother Catherine's maiden surname as MacLeod.

Alexander's mother Isabella, his brother Donald, and other relatives, are in the previous Household at Polbain 61-5.

Polbain 61-7

Notes on this Household:

This Household appears in Enumeration District 2, page 3. They were all marked as born at Coigach.

In the 1851 census this family was at Polbain 51-25. Cannot yet identify any of these people in the 1871 census, however three children are there; Angus at Polbain 71-5, Hector at Polbain 71-6, and Mary at Polbain 71-7.

Abigail, "Abie" above, dies 28 September, 1862 at Polbain aged 55 years, Informant her husband Murdoch. The registration notes her parents had been Donald MacLeod and Ann, maiden surname MacLeod, both deceased.

Murdoch dies 6 August, 1869 at Polbain, aged 79 years, his parents noted as having been Hector MacLeod and Mary, maiden surname MacLeod, Informant his son Hector.

Daughter Mary is in this census at Polbain 61-4, married to Murdoch MacLeod.

I think this family was originaly from Badentarbet. The Parish Register records the christening 16 November, 1828 at Badentarbet of a son Hector to a father Murdoch McLeod, Hector was with them in the 1841 census. Memorial stone for son Angus confirms the father of Murdoch above was another Hector.

Notes on this Household:

This Household appears in Enumeration District 2, page 3. They were all marked as born at Coigach, except Flora born at Assynt. Following this Household the enumerator noted there was a "House Building" (meaning being built).

In the 1851 census this family was at Polbain 51-29. With them then was a 32 year old nephew of George named Angus; I think probably the Angus above is wrongly listed here as "Brother". The 1871 census has the family at Polbain 71-13, with Angus's relationship then listed as "Serv".

Polbain 61-9

Notes on this Household:

All marked as born in Gairloch. (?! differs from other data)

In 1851 this family was at Polbain 51-30, along with Roderick, who is in this census married with a child at Polbain 61-11. In 1871 the family is at Polbain 71-14.

Also in the O.P.R. is the christening of John MacDonald at Badintarbat 10 February, 1821 to a father named John.

George and Margaret Campbell in the next Household, Polbain 61-10, are siblings of Janet. George's 1864 death registration says their parents had been John Campbell and Christina, Maiden Surname Kerr.

Notes on this Household:

This Household appears in Enumeration District 2, page 3. George was marked as born at Garloch, Margaret at Coigach.

In the 1851 census George was at Polbain 51-31, not sure where Margaret was then.

George's death is registered as 16 June, 1864 at Polbain, aged 72 years, Informant his sister Margaret, the Registration says their parents had been John Campbell and Christina, Maiden Surname Kerr.

George and Margaret were siblings of Janet McDonald in the previous Household, Polbain 61-9.

Notes on this Household:

Elizabeth was marked as born at Edinburgh.

Roderick is a son of Janet at Polbain 61-9. In the 1851 census he was with her and three of his siblings at Polbain 51-30.

In 1871 this family is at Polbain 71-16.

The I.G.I. gives the dates of birth of five of Roderick and Elizabeths children (John was born 3 August, 1859), all at Lochbroom. The registration gives Elizabeth's maiden surname three times as "Lyall", and twice as "Lyon".

Polbain 61-12

John McLean Head Mar 73 Tenant

Notes on this Household:

This Household appears in Enumeration District 2, page 3. They were both marked as born at Coigach. The enumerator followed this Household with the notation of a house being built.

In the 1851 census these two were at Polbain 51-32.

John's death is registered as 9 August, 1869 at Polbain, aged 82 years, husband of Mary Fraser. The registration notes his parents had been Kenneth McLean and Catherine, Maiden Surname not known to the Informant, John Ross, the Inspector of the Poor.

This Household appears in Enumeration District 2, page 3. They were all marked as born at Coigach, except Ann born at Assynt.

In the 1851 census Donald was with his Widowed mother Isabella and other relatives at Polbain 51-35. In the 1871 census Donald and Ann with four children are at Polbain 71-18.

Henny was born 20 December, 1858, and Isabella 16 March, 1861. Births of the two daughters show Ann's maiden surname was McLeod. Birth of daughter Murdina in 1873 notes parents as married 1859 in Assynt.

In this census Donald's brother Alexander is in the next Household at Polbain 61-14, Christina McKenzie at Polbain 61-15 is Widow of his brother Murdoch, and his brother Angus is at Polbain 61-18.

Notes on this Household:

This Household appears in Enumeration District 2, page 4. They were all marked as born at Coigach, except Alexander at Assynt.

In the 1851 census Alexander was with his McKenzie family at Polbain 51-35.

In this census Alexander has many relatives in surrounding Households! His brother Donald is in the previous Household at Polbain 61-13, Christina McKenzie in the next Household at Polbain 61-15 is Widow of his brother Murdoch, and his brother Angus is at Polbain 61-18.

Jemima was a Stewart originally from Badenscallie. Her parents are there in this census at Badenscallie 61-8. In the 1851 census Jemima was servant to a McKenzie family at Dornie 51-48.

Alexander and Jemima with their children Isabella and Murdoch emigrate in 1863, arriving October that year at Port Melbourne aboard the "Therese". Isabella was an ancestor of Sally Ann Heys (CONTACT INFO), and Murdoch was an ancestor of Gary McKenzie, whose wife Jan (CONTACT INFO) has also traced down descendants of other children of Alexander and Jemima, born in Australia.

Alexander and Jamina married 17 March, 1853 (with her name as "Jamesina"). Civil registration records three births to this couple;

  1. Isabella, born 26 December, 1856,
  2. Murdoch, born 23 August, 1859 (the child above, death registered 8 May, 1861 at Polbain),
  3. Murdoch, born 29 March, 1862.

This Household appears in Enumeration District 2, page 4. Christina is marked as born at Coigach, no place marked for her daughter Isabella, and her mother Isabella is marked as born at Lochbroom.

In the 1851 census Christina was at Polbain 51-34 with her husband Murdoch MacKenzie. In 1871 Christina "Christy" with her daughter is at Polbain 71-20.

The Parish Register records the marriage 18 January, 1850 of Murdoch McKenzie, a Labourer at Polbain, to Christina Morrison of Achnahaird, her father's name disapears into the fold of the page, but his residence was also given as Achnahaird.

Christina has many of Murdoch's relatives here in Polbain; his brother Alexander is in the previous Household at Polbain 61-14, his brother Donald is in two Households previous at Polbain 61-13, and his brother Angus is at Polbain 61-18.

Isabella Morrison's husband Donald and other family are in this census at Achnahaird 61-8, in the 1851 census they were at Achnahaird 51-60. Isabella dies before the 1871 census, where her Widowed husband Donald is with a son Duncan, and Duncan's family.

Notes on this Household:

This Household appears in Enumeration District 2, page 4. They were all marked as born at Coigach, except John born at Assynt.

In the 1851 census this family was at Polbain 51-36, in 1871 they are at Polbain 71-21.

John and Isabella were ancestors of Jenny Self in Australia (CONTACT INFO) through their son Murdo above, and of Morag Kane in Scotland from their son Alexander above.

Murdo marries 15 January, 1863 to Isabella Campbell, who was in the last census at Acheninver 51-13, I cannot see Isabella in this census, but her Widowed mother Williamina is at Acheninver 61-9. After their marriage, Murdoch and Isabella emigrate to Australia.

Notes on this Household:

This Household appears in Enumeration District 2, page 5. They were all marked as born at Coigach, except Abie at Assynt.

In the 1851 census this family was at Polbain 51-40.

Roderick's death is registered as unmarried 14 January, 1866 at Polbain aged 32 years. The registration notes his parents as Murdoch McLeod and Abigail, Maiden Surname McLeod, deceased.

Murdoch's death is registered as 18 January, 1867 at Polbain aged 79 years, noted as Widower, but wife not named, parents noted as having been Norman MacLeod and Rachel, maiden surname MacLeod, Informant his nephew Norman MacLeod, likely the Norman at Polbain 61-20, that Norman's mother, Christina, is shown in her own death registration to be a daughter of Norman MacLeod and Rachel, maiden surname MacLeod, and Christina was Informant in 1868 of one of Murdoch's daughters, relationship given as aunt.

Anne's death is registered as unmarried 6 May, 1866 at Polbain, aged 29 years. The registration notes her parents as Murdoch McLeod and Abigail, Maiden Surname McLeod, deceased.

A daughter of this family not present in this census, Catherine, has death registered as 12 April, 1868 at Polbain, aged 26 years, unmarried, parents Murdoch and Abigail both then deceased. Informant of the death was her aunt, Christina McLeod, clearly a sister of Murdoch, see the neighbouring Household, Polbain 61-20.

Notes on this Household:

This Household appears in Enumeration District 2, page 5. They were all marked as born at Coigach, except Donald born at Assynt.

In the 1851 census this family was at Polbain 51-41. By time of the 1871 census Christina "Christy" is Widowed with Rachel and Norman at Polbain 71-25.

John marries 22 March, 1865 to a Christina McLeod, they are in the 1871 census with four daughters in the Household previous to his mother at Polbain 71-24.

The death of Christina "Christy" is registered as 1878 at Polbain, aged 84 years, Widow of Donald MacLeod. The Registration notes her parents had been Norman MacLeod and Rachel, Maiden Surname MacLeod.

Not certain, but I think the Murdo McLeod in the 1871 census at Polbain 71-22 is the young Murdo above.

Christina is Informant of the 1868 death registration of a daughter of the previous Household, Polbain 61-19, relationship as aunt, Murdoch there had Informant of his own death registration Norman MacLeod, clearly the Norman above. So clearly Christina in this Household was a sister of Murdoch in the previous.

In the 1851 census this family was at Polbain 51-42, in 1871 they are at Polbain 71-26.

John's death is registered 1880 at Polbain, Isabella still alive then shown to have maiden surname McLean, his parents noted as having been Alexander McLeod and Mary, maiden surname McLean.

Isabella has siblings in this census at Altandhu 61-18 and Altandhu 61-20.

Cannot see this family in the 1851 census, but in 1841 Roderick was with his Shaw family at Polbain 41-19. In this census the last five Polbain Households, from 22 to 26, all include Shaws!

Roderick Shaw married Catharine McLean 19 December, 1848.

Roderick's parents are at Polbain 61-23, his sister Sally is wife of Kenneth McLean at Polbain 61-3, and he has siblings at 61-24, 61-25, and 61-26.

Notes on this Household:

This Household appears in Enumeration District 2, page 6. Finlay and Catharine were marked as born at Coigach, Henny at "Lews" (other censuses show that to be Parish of Uig, on the Isle of Lewis).

In the 1851 census this Finlay and Henny were at Polbain 51-44. With them then was their daughter Sally and her husband and children. In this census Sally and her family are at Polbain 61-3.

Before the 1871 census Henny dies, and Finlay is living with his son Murdo's family at Polbain 71-28.

The four Households surrounding this, from 22 to 26, all also include children and grandchildren of Finlay and Henny!

In the 1871 census this family is at Polbain 71-28, with Murdo's then Widowed father Finlay as Head of Household. Finlay is in this census with his wife in the previous Household at Polbain 61-23.

Murdoch Shaw married Margaret McLeod 31 January, 1856 at Ullapool, the births of eight of their children are recorded.

In this census Murdoch's sister Sally is wife of Kenneth McLean at Polbain 61-3, and he has siblings at 61-22, 61-25, and 61-26.

Notes on this Household:

This Household appears in Enumeration District 2, page 6. They were all marked as born at Coigach.

In the 1851 census Roderick was missing, but Mary and their children were at Polbain 51-43.

In the 1871 census this family was enumerated as the first in the neighbouring village at Dornie 71-29, possibly they did not move and the enumertor just decided they not part of Polbain. In that census Mary is Widowed with two children.

In this census the last five Polbain Households, from 22 to 26, all include Shaws!

Roderick's parents are at cPolbain 61-23, his sister Sally is wife of Kenneth McLean at Polbain 61-3, and he has siblings at 61-22, 61-24, and 61-26.

According to the civil registrations of three of their children born after 1855 Mary's maiden surname was also Shaw!

Have not yet identified this family in the 1881 census, but in 1891 they are at Badentarbet 91-89.

Hector and his mother Isabella ("Bell" above) were in the 1861 census at Badentarbet 61-4. They are the last remaining original inhabitants of Badentarbet, since the village was cleared in 1842.

Civil Registration Index records the marriage 5 September, 1866 at Wick, Caithness of Hector McLean and Ann McIntosh. Also recorded are the births of four of their children at Lochbroom;

  1. Betsy, born 18 June, 1867 ("Betty" above),
  2. Malcolm, born 28 February, 1869,
  3. Elizabeth, born 10 January, 1871 ("Bell" above),

Notes on this Household:

This Household is on page 1 of Enumeration District #2. Both marked as born at RossShire.

The marriage of Angus McLeod to Helen McLean was registered a few months before this census; 12 January, 1871 at Ullapool.

These two are buried at Badenscallie, the memorial includes some details; Angus died 22 April, 1875 at Polbain aged 42, it says he was "Mac mhurcaidh mhic eachainn", which translates as "son of Murdoch, who was son of Hector". It also notes he had been in the army, serving during the Indiam Mutiny of 1857-8. It says Helen died 3 July, 1927 at Altandhu aged 72 (so born about 1855), the stone erected by "K. A. MacLean, Conon Bridge". Also commemorated on the stone is "her sister Ann MacLean wife of William Fraser who died at Inverness 16 March 1915 interred in Frasers lair in Dores Cemetery".

Angus has siblings in the next two Households; Hector at Polbain 71-6 and Mary at Polbain 71-7). Their parents Murdoch McLeod and Abbie McKenzie were in the 1861 census at Polbain 61-7.

Notes on this Household:

This Household is on page 1 of Enumeration District #2. All marked as born at RossShire.

Cannot see this family in the 1861 census, however I think Hector above and Mary in the next Household, Polbain 71-7, and Angus in the previous Household, Polbain 71-5, were sons of Murdoch McLeod and Abbie McKenzie who were in the 1861 census at Polbain 61-7.

In 1881 this family is at Polbain 81-3.

The birth of Alexander was registered at Lochbroom 25 October, 1867 with parents Hector McLeod and Mary McLeod. The marriage of that couple was registered 14 January, 1862 at Lochbroom, and the same named couple a few weeks later, 6 February, 1862 at Assynt.

The death of three year old Murdoch of this couple is recorded as 5 February, 1875 at Polbain, the death registration confirms Mary's Maiden Surname as McLeod.

In the 1861 census Murdo and Mary were at Polbain 61-4, the family is in the 1881 census at Polbain 81-4.

I think Mary was sister to Hector in the previous Household, Polbain 71-6, and Angus in the Household before that, Polbain 71-5, their parents in the 1861 census having been Murdoch McLeod and Abbie McKenzie at Polbain 61-7.

The Civil Registration Index shows the marriage 12 January, 1859 of Murdoch McLeod to Mary McLeod in Lochbroom Parish, and the births of seven children at Lochbroom to that couple;

  1. Sibella, born 21 March, 1860,
  2. Angus, born 18 January, 1862, died 10 April, 1863 at Polbain,

Notes on this Household:

This Household is on page 2 of Enumeration District #2. All marked as born at RossShire.

This family was in the 1861 census at Polbain 61-1. Murdo marries 17 January, 1878 to Margaret "Maggie" McCraine from the Isle of Jura, they are in the 1881 census at Polbain 81-9 with Murdo's mother Christy and two of their children.

Christina "Christy" was a gt-grandmother of Allana McLean (CONTACT INFO) through her son Murdoch above. Allana has provided lots of info on this family!

Christina's husband had been Roderick MacLeod, he died 23 April, 1860. Roderick was in the 1841 census with a sister at Polbain 41-6.

Neil's birth was registered 14 May, 1855 to father Roderick McLeod and mother Christina McLeod. That registration says they were married 1844 at Dorney, and that Roderick who was 26 years older than Christina was a Tailor..

Elisabeth McLeod in the next Household, Polbain 71-10, is a sister of Christina, and Elisabeth's husband John was a brother of Christina's husband Roderick!

Two brothers of Christina, Donald and Murdoch, are in this census as Heads of their Households in the neighbouring community of Dornie; Donald at Dornie 71-33, and Murdo at Dornie 71-32.

A sister of Christina, Hughina, married Murdo MacLean of Altandhu in 1854 and emigrated to New Zealand. Her descendants there include Margaret Ward (CONTACT INFO).

Notes on this Household:

This Household is on page 2 of Enumeration District #2. All marked as born at RossShire.

This family was in the 1861 census at Polbain 61-2. With them in 1861 were two sisters of John, who are in this census in the next Household, probably a cottage on his croft.

In 1881 this family is at Polbain 81-1.

Christy McLeod in the previous Household, Polbain 71-9, is Widow of John's brother Roderick, and is a sister of Elisabeth above! Christina "Christy" was a gt-grandmother of Allana McLean (CONTACT INFO).

Two brothers of Elisabeth, Donald and Murdoch, are in this census as Heads of their Households in the neighbouring community of Dornie; Donald at Dornie 71-33, and Murdo at Dornie 71-32.

A sister of Elisabeth, Hughina, married Murdo MacLean of Altandhu in 1854 and emigrated to New Zealand. Her descendants there include Margaret Ward (CONTACT INFO).

Notes on this Household:

This Household is on page 2 of Enumeration District #2. Both marked as born at RossShire.

These two were in the 1861 census at Polbain 61-2 in the home of their brother John, he is in this census in the previous Household at Polbain 71-10. Probably the two sisters were living in a humble cottage on their brother's croft.

This Household is on page 2 of Enumeration District #2. All marked as born at RossShire.

This family was in the 1861 census at Polbain 61-5, in 1881 the same three are at Polbain 81-6.

The birth registrations of three of their children show Ann's maiden surname was Campbell.

Alexander McKenzie at Polbain 71-8, is a brother of Donald.

Notes on this Household:

This Household is on pages 2 and 3 of Enumeration District #2. All marked as born at RossShire.

In the 1861 census this family was at Polbain 61-8. Flory dies before the next census at Polbain 81-7, where George is with his daughter Mary (still unmarried), and his nephew the Angus McLeod above.

From earlier censuses it looks like Flory was from Assynt, and Angus was a brother or nephew of George.

Notes on this Household:

This Household is on page 3 of Enumeration District #2. All marked as born at RossShire.

Janet was in the 1861 census at Polbain 61-9. Roderick at Polbain 71-16 is a son of Janet.

The death is registered 3 July, 1876 at Polbain of John, aged 52 years, salmon fisher, Informant Johanna. The registration notes parents were John MacDonald, letter carrier, and Jessie, maiden surname Campbell.

The O.P.R. includes mention of marriage 21 February, 1820 of John McDonald Tanaray to Janet Campbell Dornie. I think it likely that Margaret Campbell in the next Household (Polbain 71-15) is a sister of Janet, possibly with a home on the same lot.

Polbain 71-15

Margret Campbell Head Unm 60 Pauper
Notes on this Household:

This Household is on page 3 of Enumeration District #2. Margaret is marked as born at RossShire.

In the 1881 census Margret is still living by herself, see Polbain 81-8.

Margaret dies 3 February, 1889 at Polbain, age "85 years", her parents noted as having been John Campbell and Christina, Maiden Surname Kerr.

Notes on this Household:

This Household is on page 3 of Enumeration District #2. All marked as born at RossShire.

Roderick "Rory" and Elizabeth, with their oldest child John, were in the 1861 census at Polbain 61-11. Also two households away then was Janet McDonald who appears in this census at Polbain 71-14, Roderick's mother.

The I.G.I. lists the birth dates of all five children at Lochbroom;

  1. John born 3 August, 1859,
  2. Donald born29 March, 1862,
  3. James born 28 July, 1864,
  4. Christy born 22 December, 1866,
  5. George born 28 January, 1869.

Two of those birth registrations give Elizabeth's maiden surname as "Lyon", the other three spell it as "Lyall".

Notes on this Household:

This Household is on page 3 of Enumeration District #2. All marked as born at RossShire.

Hector was a son of John and Isabella McKenzie at Polbain 71-21, in the 1861 census he was with them at Polbain 61-16. In the 1881 census this family is at Polbain 81-10.

Hector's death is registered as 1899 at Polbain, aged 65 years, husband of Ann MacLeod. His parents are noted as having been John MacKenzie and Isabella, Maiden Surname MacKenzie.

Angus's birth was registered as 30 November, 1864 at Lochbroom, the registration lists his parents as Hector McKenzie and Ann McLeod. Also registered is the marriage of that couple 4 February, 1864.

Notes on this Household:

This Household is on page 3 of Enumeration District #2. All marked as born at RossShire, except Ann born at SutherlandShire.

In the 1861 census this family was at Polbain 61-13. Cannot see this family in the 1881 census, and there is an uninhabited house marked by the enumerator where they would have been recorded. In 1891 a daughter of this family, Murdina born 1873, is servant at Dornie 91-57.

There are a number of births in the Civil Registration Index to Donald McKenzie and Ann McLeod, the following I am sure are for this family;

As well, I have copy of the reg for;

Index to civil reg shows a marriage at Assynt, year one out from that noted in birth of Murdina; 27 January, 1858.

Christy McKenzie at Polbain 71-20 is Widow of Donald's brother Murdoch, and Mary McKenzie at Polbain 71-23 is Widow of his brother Angus.

Notes on this Household:

This Household is on page 3 of Enumeration District #2. Both marked as born at RossShire.

In the 1881 census these two are at Polbain 81-12, with Mary's occupation then listed as "Grocer".

I.G.I. shows birth of Alexanderina "Lexy" 27 July, 1861 at Lochbroom, with parents James McLeod and Mary McKenzie.

Also listed in the I.G.I. is the marriage of James and Mary 22 January, 1857, and birth of another daughter, Christina, 26 September, 1859.

I think it likely James was the son of John McLeod christened at Tanera 1 March, 1825. Less likely, but equally possible, was the son of another John McLeod, christened 25 October, 1829 at Achiltibuie.

Notes on this Household:

This Household is on page 4 of Enumeration District #2. All marked as born at RossShire.

This family was in the 1861 census at Polbain 61-15, Christy's husband Murdoch had died before then. Cannot see Christy in the 1881 census, however Bell is with her husband Roderick McLeod at Polglass 81-21.

Also with Christy in the 1861 census was her mother Isabella, she has died since then, but her Widowed husband Donald is in this census at the Household of Christy's brother Duncan, see Achnahaird 71-97.

Donald McKenzie at Polbain 71-18 was a brother of Christy's husband Murdoch. The husband of the Widow Mary McKenzie at Polbain 71-23 had been Angus, another brother of Christy's husband.

Christy McLeod has death registered 15 June, 1876 at Polbain, aged 65 years, Informant Bella MacKenzie ("Bell" above). Her parents are noted as having been Alexander MacLeod, Minister, and Catherine, maiden surname MacLeod. She was in the 1861 census with her brother James' family at Dornie 61-6, that census notes she and her brother James were born at Harris in InvernessShire.

Notes on this Household:

This Household is on page 4 of Enumeration District #2. All marked as born at RossShire except John born at Sutherland.

This family was in the 1861 census at Polbain 61-16, in 1881 they are at Polbain 81-15.

John and Isabella through their son Murdo were ancestors of Jenny Self in Australia (CONTACT INFO). Murdo married 15 January, 1863 to Isabella Campbell, after their marriage, Murdoch and Isabella emigrated to Australia.

Jenny says the marriage marriage registration of Murdo McKenzie to Isabella Campbell in 1863 lists his parents as "John McKenzie tenant and Isabella McKenzie maiden surname McKenzie"

Alexander marries 1 February, 1877 to Christy MacKenzie from the Isle Tanera, the registration noting them as second cousins, their common gt-grandparents were Murdoch MacKenzie and Mary MacLean of Reiff. Cannot see Christy in this census, but her family is at Tanera 71-16. Alexander and Christy are living in the 1881 census at the Household before his parents at Polbain 81-14. Their descendant Morag Kane in Scotland as well as providing details from the marriage registration has shared much research on the family and it's descent.

Hector McKenzie at Polbain 71-17 is a son of John and Isabella, he was with them in the 1861 census, he married 4 November, 1864 to Ann McLeod.

Isabella's 1882 death registration notes her parents had been Roderick McKenzie and Eric McLeod ("Eric" a Gaelic name often noted as "Henrietta" or "Euphemia"). That couple were in the 1841 census at Faochag. She has siblings in this census; Janet Ross at Reiff 71-71, Duncan McKenzie at Reiff 71-76, and Hugh McKenzie at Faochag 71-80. Her brother John MacKenzie emigrated to Australia in 1848, and is an ancestor of the late Barbara Kolle of Melbourne.

Not certain, but I think Murdo was in the 1861 census at Polbain 61-20, and his Widowed mother is in this census at Polbain 71-25. If that guess is correct, then John at Polbain 71-24 is also a brother of Murdo.

In the 1881 census this family is at Polbain 81-16.

Civil Registration records the marriage 1 March, 1866 of Murdoch McLeod to Catherine McKenzie. Also recorded is the birth of Ann 16 October, 1867 and Margaret 23 April, 1874 to that couple. Cannot see though a daughter Chirsty whose birth was registered in 1870 though.

In 1861 this family was at Polbain 61-18 with Mary's husband Angus then as Head of Household. These three are in the 1881 census are at Polbain 81-17.

The marriage of Angus McKenzie to Mary McKenzie was registered 2 February, 1860.

Mary's dead husband Angus has relatives in this census in Polbain; Donald McKenzie at Polbain 71-18 is a brother, and Christina McKenzie at Polbain 71-20 is Widow of his brother Murdoch.

John was a son of Christy McLeod in the next Household, Polbain 71-25, in the 1871 census he was with his family at Polbain 61-20.

In the 1881 census this family is at Polbain 81-18.

John's father was Donald, present in the 1861 census. I am sure Dolina above was named to honour her grandfather shortly after his death.

The marriage of John Mcleod to Christina McLeod was registered as 22 March, 1865, and registration of the births of their children confirm this was that couple. The marriage registration notes Christy was also resident Polbain, her parents were John MacLeod and Isabella, maiden surname MacLean, cannot see her with her family in 1861, but in this census her parents and five of her siblings are at Polbain 71-26.

Not certain, but I think Murdo at Polbain 71-22 was a brother of John.

The death of Christy is registered as 6 July, 1878 at Polbain, aged 84 years, Widow of Donald MacLeod. The Registration notes her parents had been Norman MacLeod and Rachel, Maiden Surname MacLeod. Informant was her son Norman.

John in the previous Household, Polbain 71-24, was a son of Christy. Not certain, but I think Murdo at Polbain 71-22 was also a son of Christy.

Notes on this Household:

This Household is on page 5 of Enumeration District #2. All marked as born at RossShire.

This family was in the 1861 census at Polbain 61-21. In the 1881 census Isabella ("Bell" above) is Widowed, living with three of her unmarried children at Polbain 81-21.

John's death is registered as 26 June, 1880 at Polbain, aged 73 years, "Bell" Isabella still alive then shown to have maiden surname McLean, his parents noted as having been Alexander McLeod and Mary, maiden surname McLean.

A daughter of this family, Christy, is wife of John MacLeod two Households before at Polbain 71-24.

Before the next census Murdo marries Ann MacLean from Camuscoille (at least the third consecutive generation where a MacLeod son marries a MacLean daughter), and is with her and her Widowed mother Margaret in the 1881 census at Polbain 81-20. I cannot see Ann in this census, but her brother Norman and mother Margaret are at Camuscoille 71-87.

This family was in the 1861 census at Polbain 61-3, and is in the 1881 census at Polbain 81-22 (with Saly as "Sarah").

John and Malcolm die 14 October, 1879 "between Ullapool and Coigach, usual residence Polbain". Their death was a terrible tragedy, see the file at PAINFUL BOAT ACCIDENT. Death Registrations note their parents noted had been Kenneth McLean and Sarah, Maiden Surname Shaw, John is noted in the article as leaving a Widow (his death registration notes she was Dolina McLeod). Third of the deaths was their first cousin, young Murdo Shaw in the next Household. Fourth dead on the boat was unrelated Thomas MacKenzie from Achnahaird, farm manager at Badentarbat, he is in this census at Achnahaird 71-98.

Kenneth's parents, Murdo MacLean and Anabella, Maiden Surname MacLean, are in this census at Altandhu 71-47 with other relatives.

Sally's father, Finlay Shaw, is Head of the next Household at Polbain 71-28. Mary Shaw at Dornie 71-29 is Widow of Sally's brother Roderick.

Notes on this Household:

This Household is on page 5 of Enumeration District #2. All marked as born at RossShire.

Finlay was in the 1861 census with his wife Henny at Polbain 61-23. In that census Murdo and his family were in the next Household at Polbain 61-24.

In the 1881 census at Polbain 81-23 Murdo is Head of Household, I think Finlay probably dies before then.

Interesting to note Margaret's maiden surname was also Shaw, as shown in the registration of their marriage 31 January, 1856, and the births of eight of their children.

Young Murdo dies 14 October, 1879 "between Ullapool and Coigach, usual residence Polbain". A terrible tragedy of four drownings, see the file at PAINFUL BOAT ACCIDENT. With him were his first cousins, John and Malcolm McLean, who are in this census in the previous Household. Fourth dead on the boat was unrelated Thomas MacKenzie from Achnahaird, farm manager at Badentarbat, he is in this census at Achnahaird 71-98.

In the 1871 census this family was at Polbain 71-6, in 1891 they are at Polbain 91-87.

The birth of Alexander was registered at Lochbroom 25 October, 1867 with parents Hector McLeod and Mary McLeod. The marriage of that couple was registered 14 January, 1862 at Lochbroom, and the same named couple a few weeks later, 6 February, 1862, at Assynt.

I think Murdo MacLeod in the next Household, Polbain 81-4, was a brother of Hector.

By 1891 with the family is a 7 year old son Hector, Kate Ferris on the Isle of Lewis (CONTACT INFO), while searching for her own MacLeods on the database at http://ellisislandrecords.org found that young Hector emigrated to the U.S.A. in 1911.

Notes on this Household:

This Household appears in Enumeration District 2, page 1. They were all marked as born at Lochbroom. Abigail is marked "Imbecile", and yes, one year old Murdo is marked as a scholar!

In the 1871 census this family was at Polbain 71-7, in 1891 they are at Polbain 91-86.

The Civil Registration Index shows the marriage 12 January, 1859 of Murdoch McLeod to Mary McLeod in Lochbroom Parish, and the births of seven children at Lochbroom to that couple;

  1. Sibella, born 21 March, 1860,
  2. Angus, born 18 January, 1862,

I think Hector MacLeod in the previous Household, Polbain 81-3, was a brother of Murdo.

In the 1871 census this family was at Polbain 71-8, in 1891 Catherine has died, Alexander, unmarried Annabella, and a 7 year old grandson (likely Annabella's son) are at Polbain 91-85.

Catherine "Ketty" was maiden surnamed McLeod.

Donald McKenzie in the next Household at Polbain 81-6 is a brother of Alexander.

In the 1871 census this family was at Polbain 71-12, in 1891 the family is at Polbain 91-83.

The birth registrations of three of their children show Ann's maiden surname was Campbell.

Alexander McKenzie in the previous Household at Polbain 81-5 is a brother of Donald.

Ann's death is registered as 5 March, 1904 at Polbain, aged 86 years, "Widow of Donald MacKenzie Crofter", her parents noted as having been Alexander Campbell and Ann, maiden surname Fraser, Informant was her son in law, Neil MacLeod.

In the 1871 census these three were at Polbain 71-13, George's wife Flora was still alive then.

Mary marries 24 March, 1887 at Lochinver in the neighbouring parish of Assynt to Duncan Mackenzie, a crofter resident Culkein, son of John Mackenzie and Isabella, maiden surname Mackenzie.

Polbain 81-8

Margaret Campbell Head Unm 72 Pauper
Notes on this Household:

This Household appears in Enumeration District 2, page 2. Margaret is marked as born at Lochbroom.

In the 1871 census Margaret was by herself at Polbain 71-15.

Margaret dies 3 February, 1889 at Polbain, age "85 years", her parents noted as having been John Campbell and Christina, Maiden Surname Kerr. Informant was Murdoch MacLean, "Inmate", likely the Murdo in the next Household, suggesting they were in the same home.

Christina Do Mother Wid 58
Notes on this Household:

This Household appears in Enumeration District 2, page 2. They were all marked as born at Lochbroom, except Maggie born on Isle Jura in Argyle.

In the 1871 census this family was at Polbain 71-16, Murdo was unmarried then, with him and his mother was an unmarried brother Niel. In 1891 the family is at Polbain 91-82, Murdo missing from home that night.

Three of the above people were ancestors of Allana McLean (CONTACT INFO), as Murdo and Maggie were her grandparents, and Christina her gt-grandmother! Allana has provided lots of info on this family.

Christina's husband had been a tailor, Roderick MacLeod, they married at Dornie in 1844. Roderick died in 1860.

Allana says Margaret "Maggie" was a McCraine from Jura, Murdo boarded with her family while working as a mason building the distillery at Caigenhouse there, and married Margaret 17 January, 1878. Allana says Margaret always missed the beautiful Isle of Jura, and never felt at home in Polbain, where she was considered an "incomer".

Elizabeth McLeod at Polbain 81-1, is a sister of Christina, and Elisabeth's husband John was a brother of Christina's husband Roderick!

Two brothers of Christina, Donald and Murdoch, are in this census as Heads of their Households in the neighbouring community of Dornie; Donald at Dornie 81-3, and Murdo at Dornie 81-2.

A sister of Christina, Hughina, married Murdo MacLean of Altandhu in 1854 and emigrated to New Zealand. Her descendants there include Margaret Ward (CONTACT INFO).

Notes on this Household:

This Household appears in Enumeration District 2, page 2. They were all marked as born at Lochbroom. This Household is followed by one marked as "Uninhabited". If the enumerater followed the same route as in the 1871 census that was likely the MacKenzie family that was then at Polbain 71-18.

In the 1871 census this family was at Polbain 71-17. In 1891 these Hector and Ann, with Ann`s unmarried sister Rachel, are at Polbain 91-79.

Hector's death is registered as 1 January, 1899 at Polbain, aged 65 years, husband of Ann MacLeod. His parents are noted as having been John MacKenzie and Isabella, Maiden Surname MacKenzie, Informant his son Angus.

Angus's birth was registered as 30 November, 1864 at Lochbroom, the registration lists his parents as Hector McKenzie and Ann McLeod. Also registered is the marriage of that couple 4 February, 1864.

Hectors parents and two of his siblings are in this census at Polbain 81-15, and Alexander MacKenzie at Polbain 81-14 is his brother.

Notes on this Household:

This Household appears in Enumeration District 2, page 2. Mary is marked as born at Wick in Caithness, and Alexanderina at Lochbroom. This Household is preceeded by one marked as "Uninhabited". If the enumerater followed the same route as in the 1871 census that was likely the MacKenzie family that was then at Polbain 71-18.

In the 1871 census these two were at Polbain 71-19, with Mary's occupation listed as "Dressmaker". In 1891 these two are at Polbain 91-78.

I.G.I. shows the birth of Alexanderina "Lexy" 27 July, 1861 at Lochbroom, with parents James McLeod and Mary McKenzie.

This Household is on Page 3 of Enumeration District #2. All are marked as born at Lochbroom.

Alexander's parents and two siblings are in the next Household, Polbain 81-15. He was with them in the 1871 census at Polbain 71-21. In 1891 this family is at Polbain 91-76.

The marriage of Alexander McKenzie resident Dornie to Christina McKenzie resident Tanera was registered as 1 February, 1877, his parents as noted above are in the next Household, hers (and her sister Alexanderina) as Murdo MacKenzie and Catherine MacLeod. Catherine is widowed and living in this census at Tanera 81-16, in the village of Ardnagoine there.

The marriage registration notes Alexander and Christy as second cousins, their common gt-grandparents were Murdoch MacKenzie and Mary MacLean of Reiff.

Alexanderina was born 11 November, 1866, and dies in 1941, she is a grandmother of Alistair MacLeod (CONTACT INFO), who is the Highland Council Genealogist! In the last census she was with her parents and family at Tanera 71-16.

Hector MacKenzie at Polbain 81-10 is a brother of Alexander.

In the 1871 census this family was at Polbain 71-21. In 1891 this family is at Polbain 91-75.

The death of Isabella, "Bella" above, is registered as 10 July, 1882 at Polbain, aged 78 years, John still alive then. The registration notes her parents had been Roderick McKenzie and Eric, maiden surnamed MacLeod. The 1877 marriage registration of her son Alexander noting his wife as a second cousin makes clear Isabella's parents were the couple of those names at Faochag, part of the large MacKenzie of Reiff family.

The death of John is noted as 23 January, 1892 at Polbain, aged 92 years, Informant his son Donald. His parents are noted as having been Roderick MacKenzie and Margaret, maiden surname MacLeod.

John and Isabella through their son Murdo were ancestors of Jenny Self in Australia (CONTACT INFO). Murdo married 15 January, 1863 to Isabella Campbell, after the marriage Murdoch and Isabella emigrated to Australia. Jenny notes the marriage registration has Bella above as maiden surname McKenzie.

Alexander in the previous Household, Polbain 81-14 is a son of John and Bella, he was with them in the last census, his descendants include Morag Kane, who has done much research on the family.

Hector at Polbain 81-10 is another son of John and Isabella.

Bella has siblings in this census; Janet Ross at Reiff 81-16, Duncan McKenzie at Reiff 81-22, and Hugh McKenzie at Faochag 81-2. Her brother John MacKenzie emigrated to Australia in 1848, and is an ancestor of the late Barbara Kolle of Melbourne.

Not certain, but I think John MacLeod at Polbain 81-18, and Norman and Rachel at Polbain 81-19 are siblings of Murdo.

Angus had a brother Donald in the 1871 census at Polbain 71-18, there is in this census an uninhabited house there.

In the 1871 census this family was at Polbain 71-24, by 1891 John has died, Christy with eight children is at Polbain 91-72.

The marriage of John Mcleod to Christina McLeod was registered as 22 March, 1865, and registration of the births of their children confirm this was that couple.

Norman and Rachel MacLeod in the next Household, Polbain 81-19 are siblings of John.

Not certain, but I think Murdo at Polbain 81-16 was a brother of John.

Murdo in the previous Household, Polbain 81-20 is another son of Isabella, he was with the family in the 1871 census.

The death of Isabella is registered as 25 April, 1890 at Polbain aged 77 years, Widow of John MacLeod, her parents noted as having been John MacLean and Maggie, maiden surname MacKenzie, Informant her son Kenneth. The parents names and her age show her to be a daughter of a family at Altandhu, her mother Margaret one of the large MacKenzie of Reiff family, that Margaret died 1855, Registrations that year include childrens names and ages which confirms Isabella as a daughter.

I think Hector MacLeod in the next Household, Polbain 91-87, was a brother of Murdo.

Notes on this Household:

This Household appears in Enumeration District 2, page 17. They were all marked as born at Coigach.

In the 1881 census this family was at Polbain 81-3.

The birth of a so Alexander (with the family in 1881) was registered at Lochbroom 25 October, 1867 with parents Hector McLeod and Mary McLeod. The marriage of that couple was registered 14 January, 1862 at Lochbroom, and the same named couple a few weeks later, 6 February, 1862, at Assynt.

I think Murdo MacLeod in the previous Household, Polbain 91-86, was a brother of Hector.

Kate Ferris on the Isle of Lewis (CONTACT INFO), while searching for her own MacLeods on the database at http://ellisislandrecords.org found that young Hector above emigrated to the U.S.A. in 1911.

In the 1881 census this family was at Polbain 81-2.

The visitor, Henrietta, was in the 1881 census at Achnahaird 81-6, no clear relationship between the familys.
