These notes are built around my own and others transcriptions of various Badenscallie censuses. They have been fleshed out a bit with info from birth, marriage, and death registrations, and family info from other researchers.
My main genealogy page is at index.htm from there you will find links to other Coigach researchers, communities, a small history file, and a gazetteer of Coigach.
If you see any errors or omissions please let me know, thanks,
Donald MacDonald-Ross
Besides the familys listed below, the Parish Register includes some christenings at Badenscally that do not clearly match up with households yet;
Alexander MacLeod 40 Weaver Ann do 30 Peggy do 4 Ann do 2Notes on this Household:
All were marked as born in County.
In the 1851 census this family is at Badenscallie 51-24.
The I.G.I. includes a marriage 6 March, 1835 in Lochbroom of an "Alex. McLeod" to "Ann Stuart". The death of Alexander is registered as 1877 at Badenscallie, the registration confirms Ann was Maiden Surname Stewart, and also that his parents had been Alexander McLeod and Margaret, whose badly written Maiden Surname appears to be "Kerr".
In 1862 Alexander testified in the "Coigach Salmon Case", stating he was a Weaver at Badenscally and noted;
"I am 64 years of age. My father Alexander MacLeod was joint tenant of part of the lands of Inverpolly. He held this from the Cromartie family. He had also the salmon fishings of the River Polly. He had them as subtenant from Capt. Kenneth MacKenzie of Ledbeg who was branch of Cromartie. My father had the fishings before I was born and continued to hold them after I was born. I have often seen my father fishing. He fished by cruive. I think he had the fishings for 7 or 8 years altogether and he held them up to the termination of Capt MacKenzie's Lease. William MacKenzie Inverpolly then got the fishings and had them for 3 or 4 years. My father then left Inverpolly and came to Badenscally."
The following testifier, John MacLeod af Achavraie, notes himself as Alexander's brother, and his testimony agrees, noting their father Alexander moving from Inverpolly to Badenscallie in 1814. John with his family is in this census at Achadh' a Bhraigh 41-3. John's death registration in 1873 notes their parents had been Alexander MacLeod, and Peggie MacLeod, and Alexander's own death registered 1877 notes parents as Alexander McLeod and Margaret, whose badly written Maiden Surname appears to be "Kerr".
Roderick McKenzie 76 Tenant Simon do 10 John do 8 Hector do 6 Jane do 35 Mary do 15 Isabella do 12 Jannet do 20Notes on this Household:
All were marked as born in County.
In the 1851 census this family with only the three sons at home is at Badenscallie 51-23, Roderick is there shown to be born at Gairloch, husband of Jane, and his age then as "90"!
The 1798 Militia List includes a Roderick MacKenzie at Badinscaly which might be the Roderick above.
Jane was Roderick's second wife, the first is recorded in marriage and death registrations for his daughter Isabella as Ann MacLeod. The Parish Register records a marriage 13 July 1826 of "Rodk McKenzie Ardindrean to Ann McLeod Isle Ristol". Might refer to the above Roderick, or possibly just a coincidence.
Jane's maiden surname was McLeod, as listed in the death registration of young Hector above 15 July 1898. "Jane" was a rare forename in Lochbroom records, it is interesting but probably a coincidence that Isabella McKenzie above, stepdaughter of a Jane McKenzie, marries Kenneth McDonald at Achendrean, whose mother's maiden name there had also been "Jane McKenzie"!
The Parish Register records the christenings of Simon 28 December 1827 and John 7 February 1830.
Young Isabella above marries 1 February 1849 to Kenneth McDonald at Achendrean in Strathcanaird, he is in this census with his family at Achendrean 41-8. They are in the 1851 census with Kenneth's Widowed father Murdoch and various of Kenneth's relations at Achendrean 51-16. Their son Hector is with Isabella's family in the 1871 census.
I think Mary above is the Mary McKenzie who the I.G.I. say marries 10 February 1843 to Roderick Morrison. With her parents in the 1851 census is a 7 year old granddaughter Jane Morrison, and in 1871 at Badenscallie 71-87 is a 17 year old granddaughter Ann Morison from Ullapool, likely the Morison family lived there. The I.G.I. also lists the births of four other children with parents Roderick Morrison and Mary McKenzie;
Likely Jannet McKenzie was a sister or other close relative of Roderick or Jane.
John Tolmie 25 Cotter Murdoch Matheson 20 " Alexander Tolmie 15 "Notes on this Household:
All were marked as born in County.
Alexander Grant 15 Cotter James do 10 " Katharine do 25 " Ann MacLeod 50 " Isabella Macdonald 40 "Notes on this Household:
All were marked as born in County.
In 1851 Catherine and another Grant, Margaret, are at Badenscallie 51-26, Catherine shown as aunt. In 1861 she is also showed as aunt, to Alexander then; see Badenscallie 61-15.
Alexander's death was registered 1 November 1861 (reg# 20) at Badenscallie aged 38 years. His parents were listed as Roderick Grant, Tenant, and Margaret McDonald, Deceased. The Informant was his brother; Samuel Grant.
The Parish Register records the marriage 12 February 1819 of Roderick Grant Ullapool to Margaret McDond. her residence is unclear, either "Airdendrean" or "Achendrean", the former is most likely, given there were a number of other Achendrean MacDonalds at Badenscallie.
Alexander's father Roderick and his second wife and other relatives are in this census at Achiltibuie 41-9.
I assume Isabella Macdonald above was a sister of Alexander's mother, no obvious relationship for Ann MacLeod though.
Parish Register includes a few christenings to Roderick Grant at Ardmair;
Allan Mackenzie 89 Crofter Margaret do 60 Sibla do 20 Murdoch MacLeod 9Notes on this Household:
All were marked as born in County.
In the 1851 census Margaret is Widowed, and living by herself at Badenscallie 51-22.
There was registration of the death of a Margaret McLeod in 1861 (the Margaret above?);
61/21 d.Badinscally
Margaret McLeod, 89 yrs, 8 Dec 1861
Widow of Duncan McLeod, Grocer.
Father; Allan McKenzie, Tenant, Deceased.
Mother; Mary McDonald, Deceased.
Informant; Roderick McLeod, Grandson.
The I.G.I. lists the christening (and one birth) in neighbouring Assynt Parish of seven children to Duncan McLeod and Margaret McKenzie;
Based on relationships shown in later censuses, and naming patterns of children (having children both with the unusual for Coigach forenames of "Allan" and "Jane"), I think the children of Allan MacKenzie and Mary MacDonald included;
Sibla above may be the daughter of George McKenzie (in this census at Achiltibuie 41-29), there was a christening 24 July 1824 at Achendrean Strathcanaird of a Sibla to a George, and two of George's sisters, Jane and Isabella, are shown in the 1871 census as having been born there.
Likely Murdoch McLeod above was the son of Margaret born 1826.
Allan McKenzie and Mary McDonald were gt-gt-gt-grandparents of George MacLean of Inverness, through their daughter Jane. George was a great researcher who recently died, he will be greatly missed! I have contact info for his son, also named George, but genealogy is not his own hobby.
Allan and Mary were also ancestors of Sally Ann Heys in Australia (CONTACT INFO) through their daughter Isabella.
Murdoch Macleod 55 Tenant Isabella do 40 Angus do 20 Hugh do 15 Donald do 14 Kenneth do 10Notes on this Household:
All were marked as born in County.
This family is in the 1851 census at Badenscallie 51-25. By that time Murdoch is Widowed, and Angus is married with two young children. Hugh's Death registered 1878 shows his mother, Isabella above, was Maiden Surnamed MacLeod.
Murdoch's death is registered 1857 aged 76 years, noted as a Widower, the wife not identified, his parents noted as having been Hugh MacLeod and Ann, Maiden Surname MacAulay.
Angus marries 25 February, 1847 to Mary Grant, who is in this census with her family at Acheninver 41-1.
Cannot see Donald in the 1851 census, but he is in the 1861 census at Badenscallie 61-17 with his brother Hugh.
Murdoch has a brother John in this census at Badenscallie 41-18.
Margaret Macleod 60 Cotter Mary do 70 "Notes on this Household:
Both were marked as born in County.
Roderick Stewart 40 Crofter Simon do 15 Norman do 15 Duncan do 10 Mary do 40 Isabella do 14 Catharine do 12Notes on this Household:
All were marked as born in County.
This family is in the 1851 census at Badenscallie 51-30, with Mary's place of birth marked as Fort Augustus InvernessShire.
The Parish Register includes the marriage 22 February 1820 of Roderick Stewart Badinscally to Mary Matheson Achiltibuie. I assume Mary was a sister of Roderick Matheson at Achiltibuie 41-32.
Young Norman does not show up in the 1851 and later censuses at Badenscallie, however there are two memorial stones in the burial ground there that I think refer to him, his wife, and a son. They have his death as 15 January, 1894 aged 71 years at Knockan in Assynt Parish, his wife Isabella McDonald dieing 13 July, 1913 aged 88, and their son Roderick died 17 December, 1924 aged 68.
All the Coigach Stewarts share an interesting history, see stewart.htm
John Stewart 65 Crofter Alexander do 35 Murdoch do 35 Isabella do 70 Margaret do 30 Ann do 10Notes on this Household:
All were marked as born in County.
This family is in the 1851 census at Badenscallie 51-27. I think this family originated at Inverpolly, as the 1871 census has three of the children listed as born at Inverpolly, and the 1798 Militia List (98militia.htm) has a John Stewart there.
Margaret dies unmarried 1886, age "80 years". Informant of her death her neighbour Angus MacLeod, Badenscallie 81-8. Her parents noted as having been John Stewart and Isabella, Maiden Surname MacLeod.
All the Coigach Stewarts share an interesting history, see stewart.htm
Angus Macleod 25 Crofter Margaret do 20 Mary Stewart 60Notes on this Household:
All were marked as born in County.
In the 1851 census this family is at Badenscallie 51-28. That census shows that Angus and Margaret are brother and sister, and Mary is their mother.
Angus's 1899 death registration notes his parents having been Murdo McLeod and Mary, Maiden Surname Stewart.
All the Coigach Stewarts share an interesting history, see stewart.htm
John Macdonald 50 Blacksmith John do 20 Alexander do 15 Mary do 11 Kenneth MacLean 4 Flora Stewart 20 F.S.Notes on this Household:
All born in County.
In the 1851 census this family is at Badenscallie 51-29.
I think that Flora is the Widow Flora McKenzie who appears in the 1881 census at Badenscallie 81-25, with an unmarried sister Ann Stewart. All the Coigach Stewarts share an interesting history, see stewart.htm
The Parish Register includes christening of Mary McDonald to John at Badenscally 17 February 1828.
The Parish Register recorded the marriage 24 January 1850 of Alexander McDonald, a Labourer at Badinscally, to Christina Campbell of Lechmelm. The forename of Christina's father disapears in the spine of the register, but he is also shown as resident at Lechmelm.
Both John and Alexander above are ancestors of the husband of Alyce Polak (CONTACT INFO).
Roderick MacLeod 30 Crofter Ann do 35 Catharine Stewart 14 Duncan do 10 James MacLeod 6 Ann McLeod 9 months Isabella Stewart 55 George McLeod 50Notes on this Household:
All were marked as born in County.
In 1851 this family is at Badenscallie 51-31. That census shows Ann as wife of Roderick, and the two Stewart children as hers from a previous marriage.
The death of Roderick is registered as 1869 at Badenscallie, aged 72 years, married to Ann, Maiden Surname MacLeod. His parents are noted as having been Murdoch MacLeod and Ann, Maiden Surname MacLeod.
Ann's first husband was James Stewart, the 1871 census gives her place of birth as Strathcanaird, and the Parish Register includes the marriage 27 March, 1827 of "James Stuart Badinscally to Ann McLeod Achindrean Strath-Kenard". Also listed is the christening of Catharine to "James Stuart", 4 February, 1828. There was a spate of naming of Stewart children "James" (or "Jamina" in one case) about 1835, and I assume they coincided with the death of a James Stewart.
Isabella's death registration 31 January, 1859 lists Alexander at Badenscallie 41-14 as her nephew, and says her parents names were Alexander Stewart and Margaret Graham.
If my assumptions are correct, Isabella above is a sister to Ann's first husband James Stewart, and to the father of Alexander Stewart two Households away at Badenscallie 41-14, likely named Duncan.
All the Coigach Stewarts share an interesting history, see stewart.htm
John McLeod 45 Crofter Roderick do 15 Alexander do 11 Donald 7 Annabella do 40 Jannet do 14 Margaret do 9Notes on this Household:
All were marked as born in County.
In 1851 this family is at Badenscallie 51-33.
John's death is registered 4 April 1860 aged 72, with Informant being his son Alexander. The registration lists his parents as having been Alexander and Mary, both McLeods. The registration gives his marital status as married, not widowed, so he must have predeceased Annabella.
The Parish Register records the marriage 16 February of John McLeod Badinscally, to Annabella McLeod there. Also recorded are a number of christenings at Badenscallie with father given as John McLeod, there were two other contemporary John McLeods confusing matters, but two that belong to this family were probably Alexander, c.29 July 1826, and Margaret, c.3 April 1831.
Alexander Stewart 40 Crofter James Do. 14 Duncan Do. 3 Isabella Do. 35 Jannet Do. 12 Mary Do. 10 Isabella Do. 8 Jamina Do. 6 Peggy Do. 4 Barbara Do. 2 monthsNotes on this Household:
All marked as born in RossShire.
This household is on page 8 of District 12. In 1851 they are at Badenscallie 51-32.
Not certain, but based on naming patterns my guess is the father of Alexander Stewart above was named Duncan. More certain is Alexander's grandparents were named Alexander Stewart and Margaret Graham; Alexander is named as nephew in the death registration of Isabella Stewart at Badenscallie 41-12, and the parents names are also listed.
The Parish Register records the marriage 3 February 1824 of "Alexr. Stewart Badinscally to Isabella McKenzie there".
Also recorded are the christening of some children to Alexander Stewart at Badenscally;
Isabella's Widowed father Allan McKenie along with her Widowed sister Margaret McLeod and two nephews is in this census at Badenscallie 41-5.
Isabella's sister Jane is shown in the 1871 census as born at Strathcanaird, as is Isabella herself. The mother of Isabella and her sisters is listed in their father Allan's death registration as having been Mary McDonald, likely part of the Strathcanaird MacDonald family.
Based on relationships shown in later censuses, and naming patterns of children (having children both with the unusual for Coigach forenames of "Allan" and "Jane"), I think the children of Isabella's parents Allan MacKenzie and Mary MacDonald included;
Jamina is the dimunitive of the feminine form of the name "James" (her marriage registration in 1853 spells her name "Jamesina"). At least three Stewart families named a son James about 1835, I think that James Stewart was an uncle of Alexander above, and died then.
Jamina shows up in the 1851 census as "Jemima Stewart", house servant to a McKenzie family at Dornie 51-48. She marries 17 March 1853 to Alexander McKenzie (with her name as "Jamesina") who is in this census at Badentarbet 41-9.
A daughter of Jamina and Alexander, Isabella, later emigrates to Australia, and is an ancestor of Sally Ann Heys there (CONTACT INFO).
All the Coigach Stewarts share an interesting history, see stewart.htm
Thomas McKenzie 25 Crofter George do 1 Margaret do 25 Katharine Stewart 11 F.S.Notes on this Household:
All marked as born in RossShire.
This household is on page 8 of District 12. In 1851 they are at Badenscallie 51-35.
Thomas drowns 1877, his Death Registration notes his parents had been Murdoch MacKenzie and Isabella, Maiden Surname MacKenzie, that couple is in the next Household, Badenscallie 41-16. A brother of Thomas, Murdoch, is in the Household following that, Badenscallie 41-17.
Margaret dies 1858 at Badenscallie, aged 48 years, parents noted as having been Kenneth McLean a Tailor, and Christina, Maiden Surname McKenzie.
Thomas and Margaret are ancestors of Cela Beale of New Zealand; CONTACT INFO.
Murdoch McKenzie 60 Weaver Isabella do 60 Kenneth do 5Notes on this Household:
All were marked as born in County.
The death registration for the Murdoch in the next Household, Badenscallie 41-17, lists his own parents as having been "Murdo McKenzie, Crofter & Weaver (deceased)" and "Isabella McKenzie M.S. McKenzie (deceased)", and the 1873 death registration of Thomas in the previous Household, Badenscallie 41-15, lists the same couple (though not mentioning Murdoch's occupation).
Murdoch McKenzie 30 Crofter Donald do 4 Angus do 3 Alexander do 2 Cursty do 25Notes on this Household:
All were marked as born in County.
Very likely the couple in the Previous Household, Badenscallie 41-16, were Murdoch's parents.
In the 1851 census this family is at Polglass 51-68, the enumerator that year mistakedly recorded their surname as "MacLean"!
The Parish Register records the marriage 3 February 1829 of "Murdoch McKenzie Badinscallie to Christian McCasgail Inverkirkaig Assynt".
Murdo's death is registered as having happened 27 January 1887, occupation as Weaver, and listed as Widower of Christy McAskill. His parents were listed as "Murdo McKenzie, Crofter & Weaver (deceased)" and "Isabella McKenzie M.S. McKenzie (deceased)". Informant was Murdo's son in law, Samuel Grant resident at Polglass. That couple is in the previous Household, Badenscallie 41-16, and a brother of Murdoch, Thomas, is in the Houseld before that, Badenscallie 41-15.
John MacLeod 60 Crofter Alexander do 50 Hugh do 8 John do 7 Kenneth do 5 Alexander do 3 Peggy do 40 Flora do 20 Isabella do 15 Ann do 10Notes on this Household:
All were marked as born in County.
In the 1851 census this family is at Badenscallie 51-36.
The Parish Register records the marriage 11 July, 1828 of "John MacLeod Badinscally to Margaret MacLean Altandow". This was a second marriage for John, the daughters Flora and Isabella are from the first wife.
John's 1861 death registration, confirms Margaret's Maiden Surname as MacLean, and notes his parents had been Hugh MacLeod and Ann, Maiden Surname MacAulay. It also says his own parents had been Hugh MacLeod and Ann, Maiden Surname Macaulay.
Margaret ("Peggy")'s parents John McLean and Margaret McKenzie are in this census at Altandhu 41-17, in the 1851 census Peggy's son John is staying with her Widowed sister Catherine McLeod at Altandhu 51-94. Margaret McKenzie's parents had been Murdo McKenzie and Mary McLean of Reiff, a couple who various genealogists have traced over 1,300 descendants of!
John has a brother Murdoch in this census at Badenscallie 41-6.
Ann Stewart 70 Crofter Murdoch do 20 John do 15 Kenneth do 14 Donald do 10 James do 6 Jannet do 50 Mary do 20 Rachel do 8Notes on this Household:
All were marked as born in County.
Though spelling of the Head of Households forename appears to read "Ann", I am sure it is "Angus", as he is enumerated in the males column, and when this family shows up in the 1851 census at Badenscallie 51-42 it is more clearly spelled out.
The Parish Register records the christening of three children to this family;
I *think* Angus was married twice, and named a daughter Flora in honour of the first wife Flora. The 1891 census has a Rachel Stewart who seems to be the daughter above, living with a sister named Flora at Badenscallie 91-22. That first marriage is noted in the Parish Register of the neighboring Parish of Assynt registered as 9 January, 1803;
Angus Stuart son to Murdoch Stuart in Baddinscallie Coigach Parish of Lochbroom & Flora McLeod Knockan. Mr John Robertson of Polachoir (Cautioner for him) Angus McLeod (Cautioner for her).
A daughter of Angus Stewart and Flora McLeod, Ann Sewart, is in this census at Achiltibuie 41-40, as wife of another Stewart, Kenneth.
Angus and his father Murdoch are both in the 1798 Militia List at Badinscaly, interesting that also there was a brother of Angus, John Stewart, not yet identified in other lists.
Young Donald leaves Badenscallie sometime after the 1851 census, wife of one of his descendants, Sarah in Australia (meder@aapt.net.au), has done lots of research on the family, and says Donald marries in 1859 in Kincardine Parish to Catherine Ross. He marries secondly in 1867 to Ellen Johnstone in Resolis, and is in the 1871 census at Fowlis Ferry, Kiltearn, with occupation "Ferryman". The family emigrates in 1874 to New Zealand, Donald dieing there at Tinwald in 1914.
Sarah says Angus's death is registered as happening 1858, the registration notes his parents had been Murdoch Stewart and Flora McLeod, interesting given his first wife, in 1803, looks to have been another Flora McLeod!
The 1798 Militia list has three Stewarts in a row at Badenscallie;
The various marriage and death registrations Sarah has show Janet "Jessie" above was Maiden Surname McLean, she looks to have died before the start of civil Registration in 1855, so it is unclear which MacLean family she was from.
Young Rachel is unmarried with her brother Donald's family at Fowlis Ferry in the 1871 census.
All the Coigach Stewarts share an interesting history, see stewart.htm
Murdoch MacLeod 35 Crofter do do 30 George do 9 Hannah do 30 Mary do 7 Ann do 4Notes on this Household:
All were marked as born in County.
In the 1851 census this family is at Badenscallie 51-37. That census shows the second Murdo is brother in law of the first, which corresponds to a Parish Register record of the marriage 8 April 1828 of Murdoch McLeod Achiltibuie to Johanna McLeod Badinscally.
John Mackenzie 35 Crofter Kenneth do 5 Ann do 25 Isabella do 1 Cursty Stewart 20 F. S.Notes on this Household:
In the next census this family is at Badenscallie 51-38.
John dies 1882 at Badenscallie, the Registration notes his parents had been George MacKenzie and Ann, Maiden Surname MacKenzie. Ann's death is registered as 1897 at Badenscallie, her parents noted as having been Alexander McKenzie, Miller, and Mary, Maiden Surname McLean, Informant her daughter Christy.
Kenneth marries 3 September, 1876 at Achiltibuie to Sarah McDonald, whose father Alexander is in this census at Badenscallie 41-11. Kenneth and Sarah are gt-grandparents of the husband of Alyce Polak (CONTACT INFO).
John MacLeod 40 Crofter Roderick do 4 Murdoch do 2 Alexander do 3 months Betsy MacLeod 30 Margaret do 6Notes on this Household:
All were marked as born in County.
In the 1851 census this family is at Badenscallie 51-39.
Cannot see young Roderick in the 1851 census, but in 1861 he is with his widowed mother at Badenscallie 61-1.
Mary Stewart 50 Crofter Ann Campbell 25 Catharine do 20 Duncan do 15 Angus do 13 Neil do 10 Simon do 6Notes on this Household:
In the 1851 census this family is at Badenscallie 51-41. Mary Stewart then has the surname Campbell, and is shown to be the widowed mother of the Campbell children, so I assume the Stewart surname given here is her maiden surname. All the Coigach Stewarts share an interesting history, see stewart.htm
The Parish Register includes five christenings at Badenscally to an Angus Campbell;
Catharine marries 28 January 1847 to John McLeod resident then at Badenscallie, but shown in censuses to be born at Poolewe in the Parish of Gairloch.In the 1851 census they are at Polglass 51-65.
Donald Campbell at Achiltibuie 41-13, and Murdo Campbell at Achadh' a Bhraigh 41-1 are also sons of Mary. With Murdo is a daughter of Mary, also named Mary.
Angus MacLeod 40 Crofter Roderick do 14 Ann do 35 Jannet do 10 Mary do 7 Katharine do 3Notes on this Household:

In the 1851 census this family is at Badenscallie 51-40.
The Parish Register records the marriage 25 February 1825 of Angus McLeod to Ann McKenzie, both of Badenscallie.
Ann's Widowed father Allan McKenie along with her Widowed sister Margaret McLeod and two nephews is in this census at Badenscallie 41-5. Isabella Stewart at Badenscallie 41-14, and Janet ("Jean"or "Jane") McLean at Achduart 41-3 are also sisters of Ann, they all named one of their sons Allan. The sisters Jane and Isabella are shown in the 1871 census as born at Strathcanaird. The mother of Ann and her sisters is listed in their father Allan's death registration as having been Mary McDonald, likely part of the Strathcanaird MacDonald family.
Ann's Widowed father Allan McKenie along with her Widowed sister Margaret McLeod and two nephews is in this census at Badenscallie 41-5.
Ann's sisters Jane and Isabella are shown in the 1871 census as born at Strathcanaird. The mother of Ann and her sisters is listed in their father Allan's death registration as having been Mary McDonald, likely part of the Strathcanaird MacDonald family.
Based on relationships shown in later censuses, and naming patterns of children (having children both with the unusual for Coigach forenames of "Allan" and "Jane"), I think the children of Ann's parents Allan MacKenzie and Mary MacDonald included;

This Household is on page 7 of Enumeration District #7. All are marked as born in Lochbroom Parish, except Roderick born in Gairloch.
This family was in the 1841 census at Badenscallie 41-2, Roderick's great age of "90" listed above might not be a great exageration, as he was listed then as "76". By time of the 1861 census Roderick has died, and Jane is with two sons at Badenscallie 61-18.
Jane was Roderick's second wife, the first is recorded in marriage and death registrations for his daughter Isabella as Ann MacLeod. The Parish Register records a marriage 13 July, 1826 of "Rodk McKenzie Ardindrean to Ann McLeod Isle Ristol". Might refer to the above Roderick, or possibly just a coincidence.
Jane's maiden surname was McLeod, as listed in the death registration of young Simon above 18 July, 1857 and Hector above 15 July, 1898.
Simon's death is registered unmarried 18 July, 1857 at Badenscallie, aged 28 years, the registration confirms Jane's Maiden Surname was MacLeod.
The O.P.R. includes the christening 7 February, 1830 of John to Roderick McKenzie at Badenscallie.
A daughter of Roderick and Jane, Isabella, married 1 February. 1849 to Kenneth McDonald at Strathcanaird, their son Hector is with this family in the 1871 census. Isabella and Kenneth (with their young son Roderick) are in this census with Kenneth's father and other relatives at Achendrean 51-16.
With this family in the 1841 census was a 15 to 19 year old daughter Mary, I think she was the Mary McKenzie who the I.G.I. say married 10 February, 1843 to Roderick Morrison, and 7 year old Jane Morrison above is their daughter. In 1871 at Badenscallie 71-87 is a 17 year old granddaughter Ann Morison from Ullapool, likely the Morison family lived there. The I.G.I. also lists the births of four other children with parents Roderick Morrison and Mary McKenzie;
Alexander MacLeod Head Mar. 52 Weaver Ann Do. Wife Mar. 40 Peggy Do. Daur. 14 Alexander Do. Son 7 William Do. Son 5 John Do. Son 2Notes on this Household:
This Household is on page 7 of Enumeration District #7. All are marked as born in Lochbroom Parish.
This family was in the 1841 census at Badenscallie 41-1. In 1861 they are at Badenscallie 61-19.
The I.G.I. includes a marriage 6 March, 1835 in Lochbroom of an "Alex.
In 1862 Alexander testified in the "Coigach Salmon Case", stating he was a Weaver at Badenscally and noted;
John with his family is in this census at Achadh' a Bhraigh 51-19. John's death registration in 1873 notes their parents had been Alexander MacLeod, and Peggie MacLeod, and Alexander's own death registered 1877 notes parents as Alexander McLeod and Margaret, whose badly written Maiden Surname appears to be "Kerr".

This family was in the 1841 census at Badenscallie 41-12. In 1861 this family is at Badenscallie 61-10.
The death of Roderick is registered as 1869 at Badenscallie, aged 72 years, married to Ann, Maiden Surname MacLeod. His parents are noted as having been Murdoch MacLeod and Ann, Maiden Surname MacLeod.
Clearly Ann was first married to a Stewart. My guess is he died about 1835 and his name was James, as in other cases in Coigach where a spouse remarried the first child of the new couple was named to honour the dead first spouse. (see the two Margaret McDonalds at Reiff 51-87 for example). The next family named a daughter Jamina (short for Jamesina) also about 1835.
I think that Ann's first husband James was a brother of Isabella above, and an uncle of Alexander in the next croft (Badenscallie 51-32) through a brother likely named Duncan Stewart.
The death of Isabella Stewart, unmarried, aged 76, is registered as 31 January, 1859, parents were Alexander Stewart and Margaret (maiden surname Graham), Informant was her nephew, Alexander Stewart.
Between this census and the start of civil registration in 1855 Catherine marries Angus McLeod, who is in this census three Households away at Badenscallie 51-28. They are in the 1861 census at Badenscallie 61-13. The maiden surname of Angus's mother was also Stewart!

Alexander was nephew of Isabella "Bell" Stewart in the previous croft, Badenscallie 51-31. The death of Isabella Stewart, unmarried, aged 76, is registered as 31 January 1859, parents were Alexander Stewart and Margaret Graham, Informant was her nephew, Alexander Stewart.
A daughter of this family, Jamina, is in this census listed as "Jemima Stewart", house servant to a McKenzie family at Dornie 51-48. In the 1841 census this family was at Badenscallie 41-19. In 1861 they are scattered to at least three Households in Polglass as listed below.
The Parish Register records the christening of three children to this family;
The Civil Registration index records the marriage both 3 and 4 January, 1855 of young Murdoch above to Mary Stewart, who is in this census at Badenscallie 51-32. They are in the 1861 census with two children at Polglass 61-27.

A son of this Household, John, is missing in this census. He marries 4 February, 1858 to Ann McLeod, and is in the 1861 census with his wife, children, and unmarried brother Kenneth at Polglass 61-26.
Young Donald leaves Badenscallie sometime after this census, wife of one of his descendants, Sarah in Australia (meder@aapt.net.au), has done lots of research on the family, and says Donald marries in 1859 in Kincardine Parish to Catherine Ross.
Sarah says Angus's death is registered as happening 12 September, 1858 at Badenscallie, aged 88 years, the registration notes his parents had been Murdoch Stewart and Flora McLeod, interesting given his first wife, in 1803, looks to have been another Flora McLeod!
The 1798 Militia list has three Stewarts in a row at Badenscallie;
The various marriage and death registrations Sarah has show Janet "Jessie" above was Maiden Surname McLean, she looks to have died before the start of civil Registration in 1855, so it is unclear which MacLean family she was from.
A daughter of this family, Rachel is with her brother Donald's family at Fowlis Ferry in the 1871 census.
A daughter of Angus Stewart and his first wife, Flora McLeod, is Ann Sewart in this census at Achiltibuie 51-83, as wife of another Stewart, Kenneth.

The Parish Register records of the marriage in 1824 of Alexander Stewart to Isabella McKenzie both of Badenscallie. The 1871 census shows that Isabella was born at Strathcannard.
Alexander was registered as Informant, relationship nephew, of Isabella "Bell" Stewart in the registration of her death 31 January 1859. Isabella's parents (Alexander's grandparents) were listed as Alexander Stewart and Margaret Graham.
A daughter of this family, Jamina, was in the 1851 census listed as "Jemima Stewart", house servant to a McKenzie family at Dornie 51-48. She married 17 March 1853 to Alexander McKenzie (with her name as "Jamesina"). Isabella, a daughter of Jamina and Alexander, emigrates to Australia, and is an ancestor of Sally Ann Heys there (CONTACT INFO).
Also before the start of civil registration in 1855 another daughter of this family, Mary, married Murdo Stewart. In this census they are at Polglass 61-27 with two children. In the 1871 census they have returned to Badenscallie with five children, see Badenscallie 71-116.

This Household appears on pages 16 of Enumeration Division #1. All are marked as born at Coigach. Though Ann's age is listed as "35", I am certain from earlier and later censuses that it should read "55".
In the 1851 census this family was at Badenscallie 51-31. In 1881 they are at Badenscallie 81-12.
The death of Roderick is registered as 15 August, 1869 at Badenscallie, aged 72 years, married to Ann, Maiden Surname MacLeod. His parents are noted as having been Murdoch MacLeod and Ann, Maiden Surname MacLeod, Informant was his son James.
Ann was first married to a Stewart. My guess is he died about 1835 and his name was James.
With this family in 1851 was a daughter of Ann and her first husband, named Catherine Stewart. Between that census and the start of civil registration in 1855 Catherine married Angus McLeod. Catherine and Angus are in this census three Households away with three young children at Badenscallie 61-13, I think the servant there, Anabella McLeod, is the daughter of Roderick and Ann marked as away "visiting".
Duncan was a son of Ann and her first husband, in the 1851 census he used his birth surname of Stewart.

In 1862 Alexander testified in the "Coigach Salmon Case", stating he was a Weaver at Badenscally and noted;
John with his family is in this census at Acheninver 61-2 (In the 1861 census the Achadh' a Bhraigh families were enumerated as part of Acheninver). John's death registration in 1873 notes their parents had been Alexander MacLeod, and Peggie MacLeod, and Alexander's own death registered 1877 notes parents as Alexander McLeod and Margaret, whose badly written Maiden Surname appears to be "Kerr".
The I.G.I. includes a marriage 6 March 1835 in Lochbroom of an "Alex. McLeod" to "Ann Stuart", Alexander's death registration confirms Ann was Maiden Surname Stewart.
