Notes on Badenscallie

These notes are built around my own and others transcriptions of various Badenscallie censuses. They have been fleshed out a bit with info from birth, marriage, and death registrations, and family info from other researchers.

My main genealogy page is at index.htm from there you will find links to other Coigach researchers, communities, a small history file, and a gazetteer of Coigach.

If you see any errors or omissions please let me know, thanks,

Besides the familys listed below, the Parish Register includes some christenings at Badenscally that do not clearly match up with households yet;

Badenscallie 41-1

Alexander MacLeod                      40         Weaver
Ann          do                           30
Peggy         do                           4
Ann           do                           2
Notes on this Household:

All were marked as born in County.

In the 1851 census this family is at Badenscallie 51-24.

The I.G.I. includes a marriage 6 March, 1835 in Lochbroom of an "Alex. McLeod" to "Ann Stuart". The death of Alexander is registered as 1877 at Badenscallie, the registration confirms Ann was Maiden Surname Stewart, and also that his parents had been Alexander McLeod and Margaret, whose badly written Maiden Surname appears to be "Kerr".

In 1862 Alexander testified in the "Coigach Salmon Case", stating he was a Weaver at Badenscally and noted;

"I am 64 years of age. My father Alexander MacLeod was joint tenant of part of the lands of Inverpolly. He held this from the Cromartie family. He had also the salmon fishings of the River Polly. He had them as subtenant from Capt. Kenneth MacKenzie of Ledbeg who was branch of Cromartie. My father had the fishings before I was born and continued to hold them after I was born. I have often seen my father fishing. He fished by cruive. I think he had the fishings for 7 or 8 years altogether and he held them up to the termination of Capt MacKenzie's Lease. William MacKenzie Inverpolly then got the fishings and had them for 3 or 4 years. My father then left Inverpolly and came to Badenscally."

The following testifier, John MacLeod af Achavraie, notes himself as Alexander's brother, and his testimony agrees, noting their father Alexander moving from Inverpolly to Badenscallie in 1814. John with his family is in this census at Achadh' a Bhraigh 41-3. John's death registration in 1873 notes their parents had been Alexander MacLeod, and Peggie MacLeod, and Alexander's own death registered 1877 notes parents as Alexander McLeod and Margaret, whose badly written Maiden Surname appears to be "Kerr".

Badenscallie 41-2

Roderick McKenzie                      76         Tenant
Simon        do                        10
John         do                         8
Hector       do                         6
Jane         do                           35
Mary         do                           15
Isabella     do                           12
Jannet       do                           20
Notes on this Household:

All were marked as born in County.

In the 1851 census this family with only the three sons at home is at Badenscallie 51-23, Roderick is there shown to be born at Gairloch, husband of Jane, and his age then as "90"!

The 1798 Militia List includes a Roderick MacKenzie at Badinscaly which might be the Roderick above.

Jane was Roderick's second wife, the first is recorded in marriage and death registrations for his daughter Isabella as Ann MacLeod. The Parish Register records a marriage 13 July, 1826 of "Rodk McKenzie Ardindrean to Ann McLeod Isle Ristol". Might refer to the above Roderick, or possibly just a coincidence.

Jane's maiden surname was McLeod, as listed in the death registration of young Hector above 15 July, 1898. "Jane" was a rare forename in Lochbroom records, it is interesting but probably a coincidence that Isabella McKenzie above, stepdaughter of a Jane McKenzie, marries Kenneth McDonald at Achendrean, whose mother's maiden name there had also been "Jane McKenzie"!

The Parish Register records the christenings of Simon 28 December, 1827 and John 7 February, 1830.

Young Isabella above marries 1 February, 1849 to Kenneth McDonald at Achendrean in Strathcanaird, he is in this census with his family at Achendrean 41-8. They are in the 1851 census with Kenneth's Widowed father Murdoch and various of Kenneth's relations at Achendrean 51-16. Their son Hector is with Isabella's family in the 1871 census.

I think Mary above is the Mary McKenzie who the I.G.I. say marries 10 February, 1843 to Roderick Morrison. With her parents in the 1851 census is a 7 year old granddaughter Jane Morrison, and in 1871 at Badenscallie 71-87 is a 17 year old granddaughter Ann Morison from Ullapool, likely the Morison family lived there. The I.G.I. also lists the births of four other children with parents Roderick Morrison and Mary McKenzie;

Likely Jannet McKenzie was a sister or other close relative of Roderick or Jane.

Notes on this Household:

All were marked as born in County.

Badenscallie 41-4

Alexander Grant                        15         Cotter
James       do                         10           "
Katharine   do                            25        "
Ann MacLeod                               50        "
Isabella Macdonald                        40        "
Notes on this Household:

All were marked as born in County.

In 1851 Catherine and another Grant, Margaret, are at Badenscallie 51-26, Catherine shown as aunt. In 1861 she is also showed as aunt, to Alexander then; see Badenscallie 61-15.

Alexander's death was registered 1 November, 1861 (reg# 20) at Badenscallie aged 38 years. His parents were listed as Roderick Grant, Tenant, and Margaret McDonald, Deceased. The Informant was his brother; Samuel Grant.

The Parish Register records the marriage 12 February, 1819 of Roderick Grant Ullapool to Margaret McDond. her residence is unclear, either "Airdendrean" or "Achendrean", the former is most likely, given there were a number of other Achendrean MacDonalds at Badenscallie.

Alexander's father Roderick and his second wife and other relatives are in this census at Achiltibuie 41-9.

I assume Isabella Macdonald above was a sister of Alexander's mother, no obvious relationship for Ann MacLeod though.

Parish Register includes a few christenings to Roderick Grant at Ardmair;

  1. Catharine, christened 12 March, 1826 (above?),
  2. Margaret, christened 5 September, 1830.

Badenscallie 41-5

Allan Mackenzie                        89         Crofter
Margaret    do                            60
Sibla       do                            20
Murdoch MacLeod                         9
Notes on this Household:

All were marked as born in County.

In the 1851 census Margaret is Widowed, and living by herself at Badenscallie 51-22.

There was registration of the death of a Margaret McLeod in 1861 (the Margaret above?);

        61/21 d.Badinscally
        Margaret McLeod, 89 yrs, 8 Dec 1861
        Widow of Duncan McLeod, Grocer.
        Father; Allan McKenzie, Tenant, Deceased.
        Mother; Mary McDonald, Deceased.
        Informant; Roderick McLeod, Grandson.

The I.G.I. lists the christening (and one birth) in neighbouring Assynt Parish of seven children to Duncan McLeod and Margaret McKenzie;

  1. Margaret, christened 15 January, 1808,
  2. Johanna, christened 23 December, 1810,
  3. John, christened 2 May, 1813,
  4. Mary, christened 16 October, 1815,
  5. Duncan, christened 13 July, 1817,
  6. Mary, christened 1 August, 1819 (probably the earlier Mary died young),
  7. Murdoch, born 13 May, 1826, christened 9 July, 1826.

Based on relationships shown in later censuses, and naming patterns of children (having children both with the unusual for Coigach forenames of "Allan" and "Jane"), I think the children of Allan MacKenzie and Mary MacDonald included;

  1. George McKenzie, born about 1775, in this census at Achiltibuie 41-29.
  2. Margaret McLeod, born about 1781, she is above.
  3. Janet ("Jean"or "Jane") McLean, born about 1792, in this census at Achduart 41-3
  4. Isabella Stewart, born about 1803, she is at Badenscallie 41-14
  5. Ann McLeod, born about 1805, she is at Badenscallie 41-24

Sibla above may be the daughter of George McKenzie (in this census at Achiltibuie 41-29), there was a christening 24 July, 1824 at Achendrean Strathcanaird of a Sibla to a George, and two of George's sisters, Jane and Isabella, are shown in the 1871 census as having been born there.

Likely Murdoch McLeod above was the son of Margaret born 1826.

Allan McKenzie and Mary McDonald were gt-gt-gt-grandparents of George MacLean of Inverness, through their daughter Jane. George was a great researcher who recently died, he will be greatly missed! I have contact info for his son, also named George, but genealogy is not his own hobby.

Allan and Mary were also ancestors of Sally Ann Heys in Australia (CONTACT INFO) through their daughter Isabella.

Notes on this Household:

All were marked as born in County.

This family is in the 1851 census at Badenscallie 51-25. By that time Murdoch is Widowed, and Angus is married with two young children. Hugh's Death registered 1878 shows his mother, Isabella above, was Maiden Surnamed MacLeod.

Murdoch's death is registered 1857 aged 76 years, noted as a Widower, the wife not identified, his parents noted as having been Hugh MacLeod and Ann, Maiden Surname MacAulay.

Angus marries 25 February, 1847 to Mary Grant, who is in this census with her family at Acheninver 41-1.

Cannot see Donald in the 1851 census, but he is in the 1861 census at Badenscallie 61-17 with his brother Hugh.

Murdoch has a brother John in this census at Badenscallie 41-18.

Catharine   do                            12
Notes on this Household:

All were marked as born in County.

This family is in the 1851 census at Badenscallie 51-30, with Mary's place of birth marked as Fort Augustus InvernessShire.

The Parish Register includes the marriage 22 February, 1820 of Roderick Stewart Badinscally to Mary Matheson Achiltibuie. I assume Mary was a sister of Roderick Matheson at Achiltibuie 41-32.

Young Norman does not show up in the 1851 and later censuses at Badenscallie, however there are two memorial stones in the burial ground that refer to him, his wife, and a son. They have his death as 15 January, 1894 aged 71 years at Knockan in Assynt Parish, his wife Isabella McDonald dieing 13 July, 1913 aged 88, and their son Roderick died 17 December, 1924 aged 68. The death registration of Isabella at Badenscallie (Informant her son Donald) notes her parents had been Alexander MacDonald, a seaman, and Bella, maiden surname Fraser.

Notes on this Household:

All were marked as born in County.

This family is in the 1851 census at Badenscallie 51-27. I think this family originated at Inverpolly, as the 1871 census has three of the children listed as born at Inverpolly, and the 1798 Militia List (98militia.htm) has a John Stewart there.

Margaret dies unmarried 1886, age "80 years". Informant of her death her neighbour Angus MacLeod, Badenscallie 81-8. Her parents noted as having been John Stewart and Isabella, Maiden Surname MacLeod.

Notes on this Household:

All were marked as born in County.

In the 1851 census this family is at Badenscallie 51-28. That census shows that Angus and Margaret are brother and sister, and Mary is their mother.

Angus's 1899 death registration notes his parents having been Murdo McLeod and Mary, Maiden Surname Stewart.

Notes on this Household:

All born in County.

In the 1851 census this family is at Badenscallie 51-29.

I think that Flora is the Widow Flora McKenzie who appears in the 1881 census at Badenscallie 81-25, with an unmarried sister Ann Stewart. All the Coigach Stewarts share an interesting history, see stewart.htm

The Parish Register includes christening of Mary McDonald to John at Badenscally 17 February, 1828.

The Parish Register recorded the marriage 24 January, 1850 of Alexander McDonald, a Labourer at Badinscally, to Christina Campbell of Lechmelm. The forename of Christina's father disapears in the spine of the register, but he is also shown as resident at Lechmelm.

Both John and Alexander above are ancestors of the husband of Alyce Polak (CONTACT INFO).

Isabella Stewart                          55
George McLeod                          50
Notes on this Household:

All were marked as born in County.

In 1851 this family is at Badenscallie 51-31. That census shows Ann as wife of Roderick, and the two Stewart children as hers from a previous marriage.

The death of Roderick is registered as 1869 at Badenscallie, aged 72 years, married to Ann, Maiden Surname MacLeod. His parents are noted as having been Murdoch MacLeod and Ann, Maiden Surname MacLeod.

Ann's first husband was James Stewart, the 1871 census gives her place of birth as Strathcanaird, and the Parish Register includes the marriage 27 March, 1827 of "James Stuart Badinscally to Ann McLeod Achindrean Strath-Kenard". Also listed is the christening of Catharine to "James Stuart", 4 February, 1828. There was a spate of naming of Stewart children "James" (or "Jamina" in one case) about 1835, and I assume they coincided with the death of a James Stewart.

Isabella's death registration 31 January, 1859 lists Alexander at Badenscallie 41-14 as her nephew, and says her parents names were Alexander Stewart and Margaret Graham.

If my assumptions are correct, Isabella above is a sister to Ann's first husband James Stewart, and to the father of Alexander Stewart two Households away at Badenscallie 41-14, likely named Duncan.

Notes on this Household:

All were marked as born in County.

In 1851 this family is at Badenscallie 51-33.

John's death is registered 4 April, 1860 aged 72, with Informant being his son Alexander. The registration lists his parents as having been Alexander and Mary, both McLeods. The registration gives his marital status as married, not widowed, so he must have predeceased Annabella.

The Parish Register records the marriage 16 February of John McLeod Badinscally, to Annabella McLeod there. Also recorded are a number of christenings at Badenscallie with father given as John McLeod, there were two other contemporary John McLeods confusing matters, but two that belong to this family were probably Alexander, christened 29 July, 1826, and Margaret, christened 3 April, 1831.

Notes on this Household:

All marked as born in RossShire.

This household is on page 8 of District 12. In 1851 they are at Badenscallie 51-32.

Not certain, but based on naming patterns my guess is the father of Alexander Stewart above was named Duncan. More certain is Alexander's grandparents were named Alexander Stewart and Margaret Graham; Alexander is named as nephew in the death registration of Isabella Stewart at Badenscallie 41-12, and the parents names are also listed.

The Parish Register records the marriage 3 February, 1824 of "Alexr. Stewart Badinscally to Isabella McKenzie there".

Also recorded are the christening of some children to Alexander Stewart at Badenscally;

Isabella's Widowed father Allan McKenzie along with her Widowed sister Margaret McLeod and two nephews is in this census at Badenscallie 41-5.

Isabella's sister Jane is shown in the 1871 census as born at Strathcanaird, as is Isabella herself. The mother of Isabella and her sisters is listed in their father Allan's death registration as having been Mary McDonald, likely part of the Strathcanaird MacDonald family.

Based on relationships shown in later censuses, and naming patterns of children (having children both with the unusual for Coigach forenames of "Allan" and "Jane"), I think the children of Isabella's parents Allan MacKenzie and Mary MacDonald included;

  1. George McKenzie, born about 1775, in this census at Achiltibuie 41-29.
  2. Margaret McLeod, born about 1781, with their Widowed father at Badenscallie 41-5
  3. Janet ("Jean"or "Jane") McLean, born about 1792, in this census at Achduart 41-3
  4. Isabella Stewart, born about 1803, above
  5. Ann McLeod, born about 1805, she is at Badenscallie 41-24

Jamina is the dimunitive of the feminine form of the name "James" (her marriage registration in 1853 spells her name "Jamesina"). At least three Stewart families named a son James about 1835, I think that James Stewart was an uncle of Alexander above, and died then.

Jamina shows up in the 1851 census as "Jemima Stewart", house servant to a McKenzie family at Dornie 51-48. She marries 17 March, 1853 to Alexander McKenzie (with her name as "Jamesina") who is in this census at Badentarbet 41-9.

A daughter of Jamina and Alexander, Isabella, later emigrates to Australia, and is an ancestor of Sally Ann Heys there (CONTACT INFO).

Margaret dies 1858 at Badenscallie, aged 48 years, parents noted as having been Kenneth McLean a Tailor, and Christina, Maiden Surname McKenzie.

The death registration for the Murdoch in the next Household, Badenscallie 41-17, lists his own parents as having been "Murdo McKenzie, Crofter & Weaver (deceased)" and "Isabella McKenzie M.S. McKenzie (deceased)", and the 1873 death registration of Thomas in the previous Household, Badenscallie 41-15, lists the same couple (though not mentioning Murdoch's occupation).

Notes on this Household:

All were marked as born in County.

Very likely the couple in the Previous Household, Badenscallie 41-16, were Murdoch's parents.

In the 1851 census this family is at Polglass 51-68, the enumerator that year mistakedly recorded their surname as "MacLean"!

The Parish Register records the marriage 3 February, 1829 of "Murdoch McKenzie Badinscallie to Christian McCasgail Inverkirkaig Assynt".

Murdo's death is registered as having happened 27 January, 1887, occupation as Weaver, and listed as Widower of Christy McAskill. His parents were listed as "Murdo McKenzie, Crofter & Weaver (deceased)" and "Isabella McKenzie M.S. McKenzie (deceased)". Informant was Murdo's son in law, Samuel Grant resident at Polglass. That couple is in the previous Household, Badenscallie 41-16, and a brother of Murdoch, Thomas, is in the Houseld before that, Badenscallie 41-15.

Notes on this Household:

All were marked as born in County.

In the 1851 census this family is at Badenscallie 51-36.

The Parish Register records the marriage 11 July, 1828 of "John MacLeod Badinscally to Margaret MacLean Altandow". This was a second marriage for John, the daughters Flora and Isabella are from the first wife.

John's 1861 death registration, confirms Margaret's Maiden Surname as MacLean, and notes his parents had been Hugh MacLeod and Ann, maiden surname MacAulay. It also says his own parents had been Hugh MacLeod and Ann, Maiden Surname Macaulay.

Margaret ("Peggy")'s parents John McLean and Margaret McKenzie are in this census at Altandhu 41-17, in the 1851 census Peggy's son John is staying with her Widowed sister Catherine McLeod at Altandhu 51-94. Margaret McKenzie's parents had been Murdo McKenzie and Mary McLean of Reiff, a couple who various genealogists have traced over 1,300 descendants of!

John has a brother Murdoch in this census at Badenscallie 41-6.

Notes on this Household:

All were marked as born in County.

Though spelling of the Head of Households forename appears to read "Ann", I am sure it is "Angus", as he is enumerated in the males column, and when this family shows up in the 1851 census at Badenscallie 51-42 it is more clearly spelled out.

The Parish Register records the christening of three children to this family;

I *think* Angus was married twice, and named a daughter Flora in honour of the first wife Flora. The 1891 census has a Rachel Stewart who seems to be the daughter above, living with a sister named Flora at Badenscallie 91-22. That first marriage is noted in the Parish Register of the neighboring Parish of Assynt registered as 9 January, 1803;

Angus Stuart son to Murdoch Stuart in Baddinscallie Coigach Parish of Lochbroom & Flora McLeod Knockan. Mr John Robertson of Polachoir (Cautioner for him) Angus McLeod (Cautioner for her).

A daughter of Angus Stewart and Flora McLeod, Ann Sewart, is in this census at Achiltibuie 41-40, as wife of another Stewart, Kenneth.

Angus and his father Murdoch are both in the 1798 Militia List at Badinscaly, interesting that also there was a brother of Angus, John Stewart, not yet identified in other lists.

Young Donald leaves Badenscallie sometime after the 1851 census, wife of one of his descendants, Sarah in Australia (meder@aapt.net.au), has done lots of research on the family, and says Donald marries in 1859 in Kincardine Parish to Catherine Ross. He marries secondly in 1867 to Ellen Johnstone in Resolis, and is in the 1871 census at Fowlis Ferry, Kiltearn, with occupation "Ferryman". The family emigrates in 1874 to New Zealand, Donald dieing there at Tinwald in 1914.

Sarah says Angus's death is registered as happening 1858, the registration notes his parents had been Murdoch Stewart and Flora McLeod, interesting given his first wife, in 1803, looks to have been another Flora McLeod!

The 1798 Militia list has three Stewarts in a row at Badenscallie;

  1. Murdoch Stewart, Tenant
  2. Angus Stewart, said's Son
  3. John Stewart, also said's Son

The various marriage and death registrations Sarah has show Janet "Jessie" above was Maiden Surname McLean, she looks to have died before the start of civil Registration in 1855, so it is unclear which MacLean family she was from.

Young Rachel is unmarried with her brother Donald's family at Fowlis Ferry in the 1871 census.

All the Coigach Stewarts share an interesting history, see stewart.htm

The death of Johana is registered as 1874 at Badenscallie, her parents are noted as having been Donald McLeod, and Flora, maiden surname McKenzie,

Notes on this Household:

In the 1851 census this family is at Badenscallie 51-41. Mary Stewart then has the surname Campbell, and is shown to be the widowed mother of the Campbell children. All the Coigach Stewarts share an interesting history, see stewart.htm.

Mary's death is registered 1874 at Badenscallie, her parents noted as having been Murdo Stewart and Flora, maiden surname MacLeod. Informant was a Murdo Stewart, relationship not stated though likely her brother. Her husband had been Angus Campbell.

The Parish Register includes five christenings at Badenscally to an Angus Campbell;

  1. Flora, christened 26 May, 1810,
  2. Donald, christened 7 February, 1816,
  3. Mary, christened 22 May, 1824,
  4. Murdoch, christened 25 September, 1827,
  5. Neil, christened 17 October, 1830.

Catharine marries 28 January, 1847 to John McLeod resident then at Badenscallie, but shown in censuses to be born at Poolewe in the Parish of Gairloch.In the 1851 census they are at Polglass 51-65.

Donald Campbell at Achiltibuie 41-13, and Murdo Campbell at Achadh' a Bhraigh 41-1 are also sons of Mary. With Murdo is a daughter of Mary, also named Mary.

Notes on this Household:

This Household is on page 11. All marked as born in County

In the 1851 census this family is at Badenscallie 51-40.

The Parish Register records the marriage 25 February, 1825 of Angus McLeod to Ann McKenzie, both of Badenscallie.

The 1883 death registration of Angus notes his parents as having been Roderick McLeod and Marion, Maiden Surname McLeod, his wife Ann noted as Maiden Surname McKenzie. Informant was his son, Roderick.

Ann's Widowed father Allan McKenzie, along with her Widowed sister Margaret McLeod and two nephews, is in this census at Badenscallie 41-5. Isabella Stewart at Badenscallie 41-14, and Janet ("Jean"or "Jane") McLean at Achduart 41-3 are also sisters of Ann, they all named one of their sons Allan. The sisters Jane and Isabella are shown in the 1871 census as born at Strathcanaird. The mother of Ann and her sisters is listed in their father Allan's death registration as having been Mary McDonald, likely part of the Strathcanaird MacDonald family.

Ann's sisters Jane and Isabella are shown in the 1871 census as born at Strathcanaird. The mother of Ann and her sisters is listed in their father Allan's death registration as having been Mary McDonald, likely part of the Strathcanaird MacDonald family.

Based on relationships shown in later censuses, and naming patterns of children (having children both with the unusual for Coigach forenames of "Allan" and "Jane"), I think the children of Ann's parents Allan MacKenzie and Mary MacDonald included;

  4. Isabella Stewart, born about 1803, is at Badenscallie 41-14
  5. Ann McLeod, born about 1805, she is above

This Household is on page 7 of Enumeration District #7. Margaret is marked as born in Lochbroom Parish.

Margaret was in the 1841 census at Badenscallie 41-5.

There was registration of the death of a Margaret McLeod in 1861 (the Margaret above?);

Notes on this Household:

This Household is on page 7 of Enumeration District #7. All are marked as born in Lochbroom Parish, except Roderick born in Gairloch.

This family was in the 1841 census at Badenscallie 41-2, Roderick's great age of "90" listed above might not be a great exageration, as he was listed then as "76". By time of the 1861 census Roderick has died, and Jane is with two sons at Badenscallie 61-18.

Jane's maiden surname was McLeod, as listed in the death registration of young Simon above 18 July, 1857 and Hector above 15 July, 1898.

Simon's death is registered unmarried 18 July, 1857 at Badenscallie, aged 28 years, the registration confirms Jane's Maiden Surname was MacLeod.

The O.P.R. includes the christening 7 February, 1830 of John to Roderick McKenzie at Badenscallie.

A daughter of Roderick and Jane, Isabella, married 1 February, 1849 to Kenneth McDonald at Strathcanaird, their son Hector is with this family in the 1871 census. Isabella and Kenneth (with their young son Roderick) are in this census with Kenneth's father and other relatives at Achendrean 51-16.

With this family in the 1841 census was a 15 to 19 year old daughter Mary, I think she was the Mary McKenzie who the I.G.I. say married 10 February, 1843 to Roderick Morrison, and 7 year old Jane Morrison above is their daughter. In 1871 at Badenscallie 71-87 is a 17 year old granddaughter Ann Morison from Ullapool, likely the Morison family lived there. The I.G.I. also lists the births of four other children with parents Roderick Morrison and Mary McKenzie;

Notes on this Household:

This Household is on page 7 of Enumeration District #7. All are marked as born in Lochbroom Parish.

This family was in the 1841 census at Badenscallie 41-1. In 1861 they are at Badenscallie 61-19.

The I.G.I. includes a marriage 6 March, 1835 in Lochbroom of an "Alex.

In 1862 Alexander testified in the "Coigach Salmon Case", stating he was a Weaver at Badenscally and noted;

John with his family is in this census at Achadh' a Bhraigh 51-19. John's death registration in 1873 notes their parents had been Alexander MacLeod, and Peggie MacLeod, and Alexander's own death registered 1877 notes parents as Alexander McLeod and Margaret, whose badly written Maiden Surname appears to be "Kerr".

In the 1841 census this family was at Badenscallie 41-6, with them then was Murdoch's wife Isabella, her Maiden Surname shown in Hugh's Death registered 1878 to also be MacLeod.

In the 1861 census Angus and Mary, with five children including the two above, are at Badenscallie 61-16. The next Household then, at Badenscallie 61-17, has Hugh as unmarried Head of Household, and a brother named Donald.

Murdo's death is registered as 20 May, 1857 at Badenscallie aged 76 years, noted as a Widower, the wife not identified. The Informant, his son Angus, says his parents had been Hugh MacLeod and Ann, Maiden Surname MacAulay.

Angus McLeod married 25 February, 1847 to Mary Grant, the births of three of their children are in the Civil Registration Index;

Mary's Grant parents, and other relatives, are in this census at Acheninver 51-17.

Murdo has a brother John in this census at Badenscallie 51-36.

Between this census and the start of civil registration in 1855 Angus marries Catherine Stewart, who is in this census three Households away at Badenscallie 51-31. In the next census they are at Badenscallie 61-13 with three young children.

The death of Angus is registered as 1899 at Nethill Badenscallie, aged 85 years, husband of Catherine Stewart. His parents are noted as having been Murdo McLeod and Mary, Maiden Surname Stewart.

The 1841 census confirms that Mary's maiden surname was Stewart.

Notes on this Household:

This Household is on page 8 of Enumeration District #7. All are marked as born in Lochbroom Parish.

This family was in the 1841 census at Badenscallie 41-11.

Young Alexander is the blacksmith in town by time of the 1861 census at Badenscallie 61-11.

The Parish Register recorded the marriage 24 January, 1850 of Alexander McDonald, a Labourer at Badinscally, to Christina Campbell of Lechmelm. The forename of Christina's father disapears in the spine of the register, but he is also shown as resident at Lechmelm, likely Chirsty "Christina" was the 20 year old "Christie" at Leckmelm in the 1841 census, with parents John and Eric, and four apparent siblings.

Sarah marries 3 September, 1876 at Achiltibuie to Kenneth McKenzie who is in this census at Badenscallie 51-38. Kenneth and Sarah are gt-grandparents of the husband of Alyce Polak (CONTACT INFO).

This family was in the 1841 census at Badenscallie 41-8. In 1861 they are at Badenscallie 61-9, Roderick dies before then.

The Parish Register includes the marriage 22 February, 1820 of Roderick Stewart Badinscally to Mary Matheson Achiltibuie. I assume Mary was a sister of Roderick Matheson at Achiltibuie 41-32.

Notes on this Household:

This Household is on page 9 of Enumeration District #7. All are marked as born in Lochbroom Parish.

This family was in the 1841 census at Badenscallie 41-12. In 1861 this family is at Badenscallie 61-10.

The death of Roderick is registered as 1869 at Badenscallie, aged 72 years, married to Ann, Maiden Surname MacLeod. His parents are noted as having been Murdoch MacLeod and Ann, Maiden Surname MacLeod.

Clearly Ann was first married to a Stewart. My guess is he died about 1835 and his name was James, as in other cases in Coigach where a spouse remarried the first child of the new couple was named to honour the dead first spouse. (see the two Margaret McDonalds at Reiff 51-87 for example). The next family named a daughter Jamina (short for Jamesina) also about 1835.

I think that Ann's first husband James was a brother of Isabella above, and an uncle of Alexander in the next croft (Badenscallie 51-32) through a brother likely named Duncan Stewart.

The death of Isabella Stewart, unmarried, aged 76, is registered as 31 January, 1859, parents were Alexander Stewart and Margaret (maiden surname Graham), Informant was her nephew, Alexander Stewart.

Between this census and the start of civil registration in 1855 Catherine marries Angus McLeod, who is in this census three Households away at Badenscallie 51-28. They are in the 1861 census at Badenscallie 61-13. The maiden surname of Angus's mother was also Stewart!

Young Duncan is still with this family in the 1861 census, but now using his step-father's surname of McLeod.

Notes on this Household:

This Household is on page 9 of Enumeration District #7. All are marked as born in Lochbroom Parish.

This family was in the 1841 census at Badenscallie 41-14. In 1861 Alexander and Isabella with three children are at Badenscallie 61-8.

The Parish Register records the marriage 3 February, 1824 of "Alexr. Stewart Badinscally to Isabella McKenzie there". The 1871 census (Badenscallie 71-77) shows that Isabella was born at Strathcannard.

Alexander was nephew of Isabella "Bell" Stewart in the previous croft, Badenscallie 51-31. The death of Isabella Stewart, unmarried, aged 76, is registered as 31 January, 1859, parents were Alexander Stewart and Margaret Graham, Informant was her nephew, Alexander Stewart.

A daughter of this family, Jamina, is in this census listed as "Jemima Stewart", house servant to a McKenzie family at Dornie 51-48. She marries 17 March, 1853 to Alexander McKenzie of Polbain, they are in the 1861 census with three children at Polbain 61-14. Jamina and Alexander are ancestors of Sally Ann Heys in Australia (CONTACT INFO), Sally has done lots of research on the descendants of this family.

The Civil Registration index records the marriage both 3 and 4 January 1855 of Murdoch Stewart to young Mary above, Murdo is in this census at Badenscallie 51-42. They are in the 1861 census with two children at Polglass 61-27. By time of the 1871 census they have returned to Badenscallie; see Badenscallie 71-116. In the 1871 census one of Mary's children is named "Allan", clearly after her brother above.

This family was in the 1841 census at Badenscallie 41-13. In 1861 Anabella with two unmarried children is at Badenscallie 61-7.

John's death is registered 4 April, 1860 aged 72, with Informant being his son Alexander. The registration lists his parents as having been Alexander and Mary, both McLeods.

Margret McGregor                    U.       58   Pauper
Notes on this Household:

This Household is on page 10 of Enumeration District #7. Margret is marked as born in Lochbroom Parish, and as blind.

Margret was in the 1841 census at Achiltibuie 41-38, with her then was a 15 year old "Jannet McLeod". In the 1861 census at Badenscallie 61-21 Magaret is with a 32 year old daughter Jane McGregor, both of them listed as unmarried so I assume Janet was Jane, listed with her mother's maiden surname.

Margaret's 1876 death registration says she was widower of Alexander McLeod, and her parents had been Duncan McGregor and Catherine, Maiden Surname McKenzie.

Margaret dies before the next census, 14 June, 1858 at Badenscallie, aged 48 years, parents noted as having been Kenneth McLean, a Tailor, and Christina, Maiden Surname McKenzie, Informant her son Kenneth. It is interesting the registration notes her father as deceased, but does not note that for her mother.

Thomas drowns 1877, his Death Registration notes his parents had been Murdoch MacKenzie and Isabella, Maiden Surname MacKenzie.

Notes on this Household:

This Household is on page 10 of Enumeration District #7. All are marked as born in Lochbroom Parish.

This family was in the 1841 census at Badenscallie 41-18. By time of the 1861 census at Badenscallie 61-5, John is dead and Margret is Head of Household.

John's death is registered as shortly before the next census, 5 January, 1861 at Badenscallie, aged 87 years. The registration notes his parents had been Hugh MacLeod and Ann, Maiden Surname Macaulay, Informant was his son John.

The Parish Register records the marriage 11 July, 1828 of "John MacLeod Badinscally to Margaret MacLean Altandow". This was a second marriage for John, two daughters from the first wife were with the family in the 1841 census. John's death registration confirms Margaret's was maiden surname as MacLean, and notes his parents had been Hugh MacLeod and Ann, Maiden Surname MacAulay.

Margret herself dies 1874 at Badenscallie, her parents noted as having been John McLean and "Piggy", maiden surname McLean, however from other records I am certain her mother was maiden surname MacKenzie, one of the large Reiff MacKenzie family.

Margaret's Widowed sister Catherine McLeod is in this census at Altandhu 51-94, with her there is 16 year old John McLeod, a son of this family. The mother of Margaret and Catherine, also named Margaret, is in this census with siblings and other relatives of Margaret at Altandhu 51-98 and dies 1855. That Margaret's parents had been Murdo McKenzie and Mary McLean of Reiff, a couple who various genealogists have traced over 1,300 descendants of!

Ann marries 4 February, 1858 to John Stewart, a son of Angus Stewart of Badenscallie, and Flora MacLeod of Knockan in Assynt Parish. Ann and John are in the 1861 census at Polglass 61-26.

John has a brother Murdo in this census at Badenscallie 51-25.

The 1883 death registration of Angus notes his parents as having been Roderick McLeod and Marion, Maiden Surname McLeod, his wife Ann noted as Maiden Surname McKenzie. Informant was his son, Roderick.

The Parish Register includes some christenings to an Angus MacLeod at Badenscallie;

  1. Allan, christened 25 September, 1827,
  2. Janet, christened 19 April, 1830,
  3. Janet, christened 2 May, 1830 (duplicate registration possibly?)

Janet marries 28 December, 1854 to Kenneth McLean. I cannot see them in the 1861 census, but their two year old son Roderick is with Janet's parents.

With this family in the 1841 census was another daughter of Mary, Catharine, who has since married John McLeod of Polewe (Poolewe in Gairloch Parish), and is in this census at Polglass 51-65.

Donald Campbell, the missing husband at Polglass 51-55, and Murdo Campbell at Achadh' a Bhraigh 51-18 are also sons of Mary.

Mary's death is registered 1874 at Badenscallie, her parents noted as having been Murdo Stewart and Flora, maiden surname MacLeod. Informant was a Murdo Stewart, relationship not stated though likely her brother. Her husband had been Angus Campbell.

Notes on this Household:

This Household is on page 12 and 13 of Enumeration District #7. All are marked as born in Lochbroom Parish.

In the 1841 census this family was at Badenscallie 41-19. In 1861 they are scattered to at least three Households in Polglass as listed below.

The Parish Register records the christening of three children to this family;

The Civil Registration index records the marriage both 3 and 4 January, 1855 of young Murdoch above to Mary Stewart, who is in this census at Badenscallie 51-32. They are in the 1861 census with two children at Polglass 61-27.

Mary above weds 18 January, 1855 to Duncan McLean who is in this census at Polglass 51-45. She is widowed with two children by time of the next census living at Polglass 61-22. Also with her there is her unmarried brother James and two siblings of her dead husband.

A son of this Household, John, is missing in this census. He marries 4 February, 1858 to Ann McLeod, and is in the 1861 census with his wife, children, and unmarried brother Kenneth at Polglass 61-26.

Young Donald leaves Badenscallie sometime after this census, wife of one of his descendants, Sarah in Australia (meder@aapt.net.au), has done lots of research on the family, and says Donald marries in 1859 in Kincardine Parish to Catherine Ross.

Sarah says Angus's death is registered as happening 12 September, 1858 at Badenscallie, aged 88 years, the registration notes his parents had been Murdoch Stewart and Flora McLeod, interesting given his first wife, in 1803, looks to have been another Flora McLeod!

The 1798 Militia list has three Stewarts in a row at Badenscallie;

A daughter of this family, Rachel is with her brother Donald's family at Fowlis Ferry in the 1871 census.

A daughter of Angus Stewart and his first wife, Flora McLeod, is Ann Sewart in this census at Achiltibuie 51-83, as wife of another Stewart, Kenneth.

In the 1851 census Elizabeth was at Badenscallie 51-39 with her children and her husband John, who was listed then as a "Disabled Seaman".

Cannot see Roderick in the 1851 census, but in 1841 he was at Badenscallie 41-22.

In the 1851 census this family was at Badenscallie 51-40. In the 1871 census Angus and Ann, with their son Allan, are at Badenscallie 71-71.

The marriage was registered 27 February, 1862 at Ullapool of Roderick McLeod resident Badenscallie, son of Angus McLeod and Ann, maiden surname MacKenzie, to Christina MacLean, resident Achduart, daughter of Kenneth McLean, deceased, and Janet, maiden surname MacKenzie. Christina is with her family in this census at Achduart 61-4.

The 1883 death registration of Angus notes his parents as having been Roderick McLeod and Marion, Maiden Surname McLeod, his wife Ann noted as Maiden Surname McKenzie. Informant was his son, Roderick.

A daughter of this family, Janet, married 28 December, 1854 to Kenneth McLean. Young Roderick above is her son. I have not yet found Janet and Kenneth in this census, but the civil registration index shows they had a son John born a few months later; 21 June, 1861. My guess is young Roderick was to sent to stay with his grandparents to relieve pressure on his parents during the pregnancy. A third child to the couple, Angus, was born 3 July, 1868.

In the 1851 census this family was at Badenscallie 51-37. Murdoch, the "Brother" is shown there to be Brother in Law of Murdoch the Head of Household, i.e. brother of Johana.

Notes on this Household:

This Household appears on page 15 of Enumeration Division #1. All are marked as born at Coigach.

In the 1851 census this family was at Badenscallie 51-36, in 1871 the family is at Badenscallie 71-74.

Margret's husband John died shortly before this census, 5 January, 1861, the death registration, Informant his son John, confirms Margaret's Maiden Surname as MacLean, and notes his parents had been Hugh MacLeod and Ann, Maiden Surname MacAulay.

The Parish Register records the marriage 11 July, 1828 of "John MacLeod Badinscally to Margaret MacLean Altandow". Margaret was John's second wife. Margret's death is registered as 1874 at Badenscallie. Her parents are noting as having been John McLean and "Piggy", maiden surname McLean, however from other records I am certain her mother was maiden surname MacKenzie, one of the large Reiff MacKenzie family.

Margaret's Widowed sister Catherine McLeod is in this census at Altandhu 61-6, John above was with her there in 1851.

A daughter of Margaret, Ann, married 4 February, 1858 to John Stewart, a son of Angus Stewart of Badenscallie, and Flora MacLeod of Knockan in Assynt Parish. Ann and John are in this census at Polglass 61-26.

A son of Margaret, Kenneth, is missing in this census though home in 1871. He marries 12 June, 1873 to Anne MacLeod (originally from Assynt), Kenneth and Anne are in the 1881 census with three children at Achnahaird 81-8.

No idea yet if the herd boy, Thomas McKenzie, was somehow related to this family.

Notes on this Household:

This Household appears on pages 15 and 16 of Enumeration Division #1. All are marked as born at Coigach.

In the 1851 census this family was at Badenscallie 51-35, Thomas's wife Margret was still alive then.

In 1871 this family is in the neighboring community at Achiltibuie 71-26.

Thomas's late wife Margaret was maiden surname was McLean. Thomas and Margaret are ancestors of Cela Beale of New Zealand; CONTACT INFO.

Thomas dies 31 August, 1877 when the open boat he and John McKenzie from Achiltibuie were returning in from Ullapool was swamped; see the file at twomen.htm. He was married to Margaret McLean, and his Death Registration notes his parents had been Murdoch MacKenzie and Isabella, Maiden Surname MacKenzie.

Catherine marries Murdo MacKenzie, son of John MacKenzie and Mary MacLeay 20 July, 1879 at Achiltibuie.

Isabella marries someone surnamed Ross, and has a daughter Johann born 1876, and a daughter Mary born 1880. The I.G.I. lists a marriage 30 January, 1873 of an Isabella McKenzie to a Murdo Ross at Lochbroom which might refer this Isabella.

Kenneth marries 6 February, 1868 to Mary McLeod, who is in this census at Badenscallie 61-16, they are in the 1871 census with a one year old son at Badenscallie 71-86.

In the 1851 census this family was at Badenscallie 51-33. Cannot see the first two in 1871, but Alexander marries in 1866 at Wick to Dolina Mather, and is in the 1871 census with her and two daughters at Badenscallie 71-76.

Anabella's husband John's death is registered 4 April, 1860 aged 72, with Informant being his son Alexander. The registration lists John's parents as having been Alexander and Mary, both McLeods.

Notes on this Household:

This Household appears on pages 16 of Enumeration Division #1. All are marked as born at Coigach.

In the 1851 census this family was at Badenscallie 51-32. In 1871 they are at Badenscallie 71-77.

The Parish Register records of the marriage in 1824 of Alexander Stewart to Isabella McKenzie both of Badenscallie. The 1871 census shows that Isabella was born at Strathcannard.

Alexander was registered as Informant, relationship nephew, of Isabella "Bell" Stewart in the registration of her death 31 January, 1859. Isabella's parents (Alexander's grandparents) were listed as Alexander Stewart and Margaret Graham.

A daughter of this family, Jamina, was in the 1851 census listed as "Jemima Stewart", house servant to a McKenzie family at Dornie 51-48. She married 17 March, 1853 to Alexander McKenzie (with her name as "Jamesina"). Isabella, a daughter of Jamina and Alexander, emigrates to Australia, and is an ancestor of Sally Ann Heys there (CONTACT INFO).

Also before the start of civil registration in 1855 another daughter of this family, Mary, married Murdo Stewart. In this census they are at Polglass 61-27 with two children. In the 1871 census they have returned to Badenscallie with five children, see Badenscallie 71-116.

Notes on this Household:

This Household appears on pages 16 of Enumeration Division #1. All are marked as born at Coigach.

In the 1851 census this family was at Badenscallie 51-30. In that census Mary's husband Roderick was Head of Household, and Mary was marked as born at Fort Augustus in InvernessShire.

Simon marries 27 March, 1862 to Cathrine McLeod, they are in the 1871 census with four children, and his mother Mary, at Badenscallie 71-80.

The Parish Register includes the marriage 22 February, 1820 of Roderick Stewart Badinscally to Mary Matheson Achiltibuie. I assume Mary was a sister of Roderick Matheson, the Innkeeper at Achiltibuie 61-29.

A member of this family is in that schedule, listed as "Visiting";

Ann McLeod Dau Un 22 Domestic Servt.
Notes on this Household:

This Household appears on pages 16 of Enumeration Division #1. All are marked as born at Coigach. Though Ann's age is listed as "35", I am certain from earlier and later censuses that it should read "55".

In the 1851 census this family was at Badenscallie 51-31. In 1881 they are at Badenscallie 81-12.

The death of Roderick is registered as 15 August, 1869 at Badenscallie, aged 72 years, married to Ann, Maiden Surname MacLeod. His parents are noted as having been Murdoch MacLeod and Ann, Maiden Surname MacLeod, Informant was his son James.

Ann was first married to a Stewart. My guess is he died about 1835 and his name was James.

With this family in 1851 was a daughter of Ann and her first husband, named Catherine Stewart. Between that census and the start of civil registration in 1855 Catherine married Angus McLeod. Catherine and Angus are in this census three Households away with three young children at Badenscallie 61-13, I think the servant there, Anabella McLeod, is the daughter of Roderick and Ann marked as away "visiting".

Duncan was a son of Ann and her first husband, in the 1851 census he used his birth surname of Stewart.

In 1862 Alexander testified in the "Coigach Salmon Case", stating he was a Weaver at Badenscally and noted;

John with his family is in this census at Acheninver 61-2 (In the 1861 census the Achadh' a Bhraigh families were enumerated as part of Acheninver). John's death registration in 1873 notes their parents had been Alexander MacLeod, and Peggie MacLeod, and Alexander's own death registered 1877 notes parents as Alexander McLeod and Margaret, whose badly written Maiden Surname appears to be "Kerr".

The I.G.I. includes a marriage 6 March, 1835 in Lochbroom of an "Alex. McLeod" to "Ann Stuart", Alexander's death registration confirms Ann was Maiden Surname Stewart.

Notes on this Household:

This family is on page 18 of Coigach Enumeration District 1. All are marked as born at Coigach.

In 1861 James was with his first wife, Betsy McLeod, and their son James at Acheninver 61-4. Cannot see this family in the 1881 Coigach census.

James Grant married Betsy McLeod 27 December, 1855. Four children's births were registered to that couple;

  1. Margaret, born 5 February, 1858,
  2. James, born 22 October, 1859,
  3. Margaret, born 7 November, 1861,
  4. Betsy, born 22 July, 1864.

Young James is in this census at Achadh' a Bhraigh 71-95 with his Grant grandmother and other relatives.

I think James first wife Betsy died either in childbirth of their daughter Betsy, or shortly after, as James marries second to Margaret McLeod (above) 7 December, 1865.

Births of four of James and Margaret's children are in the Civil Registration index;

  1. Janet, born 15 December, 1866,
  2. William, born 28 January, 1868,
  3. John, born 5 August, 1869,
  4. John, born 16 February, 1873.

Barbara Campbell at Achadh' a Bhraigh 71-91 was a sister of James, and Mary McLeod in the Household next to this, Badenscallie 71-85 is another sister.

Notes on this Household:

This family is on page 19 of Coigach Enumeration District 1. All are marked as born at Badinscalie. In the notes for Donald the enumerator wrote "Asthma", and then it was later crossed out.

In 1861 this family was at Badenscallie 61-16, In 1881 they are at Badenscallie 81-5.

Donald was in the the 1861 census with his brother Hugh in the Household next to Angus at Badenscallie 61-17. Cannot see Hugh in this census, possibly he is an Inmate of the Easter Ross Poorhouse at Tain, as his death registered as 10 September, 1878 at Badenscallie notes him as "Poorhouse Inmate". Hugh's death registraton (Informant his brother Angus) notes their parents had been Murdoch MacLeod and Isabella, Maiden Surnamed MacLeod.

Angus's own death is registered as 1893 at Badenscallie, aged 75 years, Mary then still alive, Maiden Surname shown as Grant. The Informant of the registration confirms parents as Murdoch MacLeod and Isabella, Maiden Surname MacLeod.

Donald's death is registered as 29 January, 1877, Angus as Informant confirms their parents names. The death registration notes Donald died of consumption, suffered 26 years.

Angus McLeod married 25 February, 1847 to Mary Grant, she was in the 1841 census with her family at Acheninver 41-1. The births of three of their children are in the Civil Registration Index;

Mary's Widowed mother Catherine, and other relatives, are in this census at Achadh' a Bhraigh 71-95, her father William has died since the last census.

Mary's brother James is Head of Household at Badenscallie 71-84, and Barbara Campbell at Achadh' a Bhraigh 71-91 is a sister.

Mary McKenzie in the Household next to this, Badenscallie 71-86 is a daughter of Angus and Mary.

Isabella and Kenneth McDonald are in this census with several other children, including Alexander the twin of Hector also born 10 October, 1864, at Achendrean 71-7. The death of Alexander is registered as 20 February, 1877 at Badenscallie, Informant his son Duncan. The registration confirms Ann was Maiden Surname Stewart, and also that his parents had been Alexander McLeod and Margaret, whose badly written Maiden Surname appears to be "Kerr".

John MacLeod at Achadh' a Bhraigh 71-93 was a brother of Alexander.

In the 1871 census this family was at Badenscallie 71-90, with George's occupation listed as "Dike Builder". In the 1891 census George and Mary are at Badenscallie 91-30, lodgers with them then are son Kenneth with a wife and son.

The Parish Register includes christening of Colin McKenzie 13 June, 1830 to a father George at Badenscallie, whose occupation is given as "Carpenter". I think it likely that George is the one in this Household, and Colin is at Badenscallie 81-17.

George's death is registered as 26 March, 1893 at Badenscallie, aged 92 years, son Kenneth the Informant. The registration notes his parents had been John MacKenzie, and Ann, Maiden Surname MacKenzie.

Mary's death is registered as 27 June, 1900 as a Widow at Badenscallie, aged 92 years, son Kenneth the Informant. The registration notes her parents had been another George MacKenzie, and Ann, Maiden Surname MacKenzie.

Another christening to George was Murdoch, 17 October, 1830.

All born at Lochbroom.

In the 1861 census this family was at Badenscallie 61-10 with Ann's husband Roderick as Head of Household. In 1891 this family is at Badenscallie 91-27.

I think the daughter Ann was in the 1861 census as "Anabella" McLeod, servant to the family at Badenscallie 61-13 where her sister Catherine was wife of the Head of Household.

Not certain, but I think James was Widower of Mary McLeod, who died 7 October, 1878 at Badenscallie, aged 25 years five days after childbirth, likely of young Roderick above. The registration notes her parents Donald McLeod and Jane, maiden surname McLeod, neither noted as then deceased, but not yet identified in this census.

Ann was a Ross from Reiff. In the last census she was servant to a McLeod family at Culnacraig 71-109.

A sister of Duncan, Jamina, married Alexander McKenzie between the 1851 census and the start of civil registration in 1855, Jamina's daughter Isabella emigrated to Australia, and is an ancestor of Sally Ann Heys (CONTACT INFO).

Informant was her son Duncan. Though the Parish Register notes Isabella in their 1824 marriage as then resident at Badenscallie, the 1871 census notes her as born at Strathcanaird.

A daughter of this family, Mary, married another Badenscallie Stewart, Murdo! They are in this census at Badenscallie 81-24. This family was in the 1871 census at Badenscallie 71-74, the Widowed mother of these three, Margaret, was Head of Household then. Margret's death is registered as 8 April, 1874 at Badenscallie, aged 76 years. Her parents are noting as having been John McLean and "Piggy", maiden surname McLean, however from other records I am certain her mother was maiden surname MacKenzie, one of the large Reiff MacKenzie family.

A brother of these three, Kenneth, has married since the last census and is now with his wife and three children at Achnahaird 81-8.

All born at Lochbroom.

Parish Register has the christening of Neil Campbell to a father named Angus at Badenscallie, 17 October, 1830.

In 1871 this family, with their Widowed mother Mary, were at Badenscallie 71-69, in 1891 the family is at Badenscallie 91-46.

Mary above was called "Margaret McKenzie" in the 1871 census. She married Donald McKenzie 16 December, 1858, had a son Donald born 7 September, 1859, and by time of the 1861 census she was Widowed.

The mother of these siblings, Mary, died 5 November, 1874 at Badenscallie, aged 90 years, her parents noted as having been Murdo Stewart and Flora, maiden surname MacLeod. Informant was a Murdo Stewart, relationship not stated though likely her brother. Her husband had been Angus Campbell.

Cathrine McLeod at Polglass 81-15 is a sister of these Campbells, Murdo Campbell at Achadh' a Bhraigh 81-2, and Donald Campbell at Polglass 81-2 are brothers.

In the 1871 census this family, with Murdo missing, was at Badenscallie 71-116. In 1891 Murdo, Mary, Angus and James are at Badenscallie 91-47.

Mary was also a Stewart! She was in the 1851 census at Badenscallie 51-32 with her parents and siblings, including a brother Alan, clearly young Allan above was named for his uncle.

Flora Stewart two Households away at Badenscallie 81-26 is a sister of Murdo, in 1871 she was at Polglass 71-61 with his children Jessie and Angus described as Niece and Nephew (those two were enumerated twice in 1871! They also show up with their mother). Ann Stewart in the next Household, Badenscallie 81-25 is Widow of Murdo's brother John. Another brother of Murdo, Kenneth, is in this census at Polglass 81-5.

Ann was in the 1871 census at Badenscallie 71-68.

I think Flora was the female servant of the McDonald family in 1841 at Badenscallie 41-11, possibly she is the "Flora McLeod" in the 1891 census at Badenscallie 91-41.

Ann was Widow of John Stewart of Badenscallie. Murdoch Stewart in the previous Household, Badenscallie 81-24, was a brother of John, and Flora Stewart in the next Household, Badenscallie 81-26, was a sister. Another brother of John, Kenneth, is in this census at Polglass 81-5.

In 1891 Flora and her sister Rachel are at Badenscallie 91-22.

The Parish Register has the birth of Rachel Stuart 17 October, 1830 to a father named Angus Stuart at "Badascally". I think Flora's parents and siblings were in the 1851 census at Badenscallie 51-42.

As well as Flora's brother two Households previous, Ann Stewart in the previous Household at Badenscallie 81-25 was Widow of her brother John, and another brother, Kenneth, is in this census at Polglass 81-5.

Murdina's brother John is in this census at Achiltibuie 81-3, also in that Household are their uncle and aunt, Donald and Elisabeth McDonald of Reiff, gt-gt-grandparents of myself, Donald MacDonald-Ross (CONTACT INFO).

Roderick's father, stepmother, and other relatives are in this census at Polglass 81-18. A brother of Roderick, Alexander McKenzie, is an ancestor of Cela Beale in New Zealand (CONTACT INFO), Cela's research shows Alexander McKenzie, son of Roderick McKenzie and Murdina McLeod, married in 1878 at Inverness to a Widow, Ann Fraser, they had a daughter Murdina at Inverness in 1880 (that Murdina is listed in 1891 at Achiltibuie 91-80 as "granneice" of Murdina's brother John).

Cela says Roderick went to Inverness for treatment in 1900 and died there the same year, and Murdina died in 1909 with their son Murdo as Informant.

Kate's maiden surname was also Stewart! Her marriage to James was registered 22 January, 1857.

There is a memorial stone in the Badenscallie burial ground for "Donald Stewart draper Ipswich England who died at Badenscallie Coigach March 29 1895 aged 34 years." Same stone commemorates his mother Catherine (Kate above), died 7 February, 1894 aged 65.

There is a death registered 26 January, 1910 at Badenscallie of four month old John Alick Stewart, son of Roderick Stewart and Annie, maiden surname MacLeod. Presumably that Roderick was one of the two brothers above.

John and Catherine were married 28 December, 1871, Catherine's maiden surname was McLeod. Through their daughter Jane they are gt-grandparents of Rev. John MacLeod, his webpage with pictures of ancestors and the area is at; Highlander -- the Scottish Website (included there is a photo of Jane as an adult!)

Young Murdo was born 9 April, 1883, his mother Sarah (m.s. MacLeod) died in childbirth.

A granddaughter of Murdo, Susan Forsyth in Kent (CONTACT INFO), says Murdo married in 1915 to Mary Ann MacLeod, daughter of the Minister at Achiltibuie, and died the same year in battle in WW1. Confusingly Susan has found in the Mormon's I.G.I. a Murdo with same birthdate, same parents, same place, but a death date 23 April 1950!

A sister of John and Hector, Isabella, married 1 February, 1849 to Kenneth McDonald of Strathcanaird.

Coigach Stewarts

In February 1999 John MacLeod (CONTACT INFO) who has ancestors at Badenscallie, emailed me the following information, it is reinforced by a letter from Jean Stewart of Inverness to Gwen Smith (CONTACT INFO) of Tasmania in 1984. Jean said three sons from Appin had to flee west to the region which is now Ullapool. I think the Stewart refugees are also mentionned in the book "Peoples and Settlement in North-West Ross" edited by John R. Baldwin in 1994 (SOURCE INFO).

John MacLeod wrote;

Various families came into the area following the '45, including the Stewarts, a party of whom (women included!) escaped from the battlefield of Culloden and fled north through the hills until they reached the Oykel valley at Tutim. There one of the women is buried in the graveyard above the road. The party turned West and eventually settled in Coigach. Originally from the Appin area, all the Stewarts in Coigach are descended from those settlers.
