Coigach Edit Log

It was pointed out to me in late 1999 that the files on my webpage were becoming difficult to keep up with, as edits are being made constantly to varied places in the many files.

So,... I started this file then as a log of edits as they happen, I have tried to keep it current, with more recent edits bumping earlier edits.

NOTE: Some internet browsers "cache" pages you have visited, and do not seek out the most recent version of a page unless specifically requested (refresh), so if you do not see any new edits since you last viewed this file, make sure you are seeing its most recent version!

• 20/02/03: Have begun transcribing and annotating the 1825, '26, and '27 Lochbroom Militia Lists, links to the files are now in index.htm, but not all of the six files are yet active
• 07/02/03: Finished notes and links for the 1861 Altandhu Households, with a few edits in 1851
• 27/01/03: Added notes and links to the first 13 1861 Altandhu Households, with a number of edits to places in 1851 affected
• 24/01/03: Added notes and links to the 1851 Altandhu Households, with a number of edits to places in 1841 affected

• 08/01/03: After studying photocoppies of the original 1881 Altandhu census made several changes to the file, including schedule numbers and fixing transcription errors
• 08/01/03: Added three McLean families at Altandhu 91-48, 49, 50, and a MacLeod family at 91-51
• 06/01/03: Added six more families to 1891 Altandhu; McLeans at 41, 45, 46, 47, Stewarts at 43, and the family of the Schoolmaster, Matthew Gray, at 44. Also updated the 1881 Altandhu files where they mention the 1891 families
• 05/01/03: Added two MacKenzie and two MacLean families to the 1891 Altandhu file; 38,39,40,52
• 02/01/03: Updated link in the contacts.htm file to the new website for the Irish Sea Kayaking Association
• 02/01/03: Updated faochag.htm with info from Malcolm Bangor-Jones that says there was no mill in Coigach in 1771, and so sets the period for the mill at Faochag as sometime from 1772 to before the 1841 census
• 01/01/03: As all the edit files so far are short, I have decided to edit them into one larger file, if the file becomes unwieldy in future I'll split it each five years or decade

• 15/12/02: Added a file, ulmuseum.htm, supplied by Ann Urquhart, regarding the Ullapool Museum
• 22/10/02: Fixed a few bad links, also discovered that when I last updated the index.htm file I did not delete an earlier version named index.html That error meant that for months people did not see the new index file, sigh....
• 11/10/02: Have added Julie Pyke to contacts.htm file, she is researching her husband's ancestors, who included the Grant milling family at Acheninver, edits are of course needed in the files where Grants are mentionned!
• 11/10/02: After a very busy summer where time spent earning a living has distracted me from time spent updating these files I have decided to make an attempt to catch up! My rough plan of attack is to go through my email inbox from most current to earliest, making edits to files as needed, and at the same time try to keep current with info sent to me or dug up through my own dredging of old microfilms!
• 14/05/02: Added the five 1891 Culnacraig Households (twenty people, all McLeods!)
• 10/05/02: Added the remaining 1881 Tanera Households; 81-8 to 81-12, and 81-17 to 81-21
• 07/05/02: Added five Households at Tanera 81-2,4,5,6,7; a MacLeod family, two related Campbell familys, a Grant family where the wife was a Tanera Matheson, and a McLean family where the wife Flora was a MacKenzie from Achiltibuie, making links at Achiltibuie 71-35 and 81-1
• 02/05/02: Based on info from Jim McGreal in Hamilton Ontario I have added Households at Polglass 91-56 and 91-58, and made edits to the notes on Jim's McLeod ancestors and relatives at Achiltibuie 41-11, 51-74, 51-94, 61-7, 61-41, 71-7, 81-30, and Polglass 51-52, 61-16, 71-49, 71-60, 81-1, and 81-12
• 30/04/02: Created file polgl.htm, spinning of the Polglass data from nother.htm, which had been becoming unwieldly large
• 29/04/02: Have now added the remaining Polglass 1881 Households; 19 to 24, step-relatives of Cela at 81-19, the rest are not as far as I see related to other correspondants. Unless I have missed any Households, only Tanera remains not fully transcribed for 1881!
• 29/04/02: Added a MacKenzie family at Polglass 81-18, ancestors and relatives of Cela Beale. Cela has sent new info on the family, which I have edited into the notes there, and at Achiltibuie 71-27, 71-33, 81-3, 91-80, and Badenscallie 91-80
• 21/04/02: Added four households to 1881 Polglass; McLeods at 81-12, 16, and 17, and Stewarts at 81-14
• 18/04/02: Updated contacts.htm to show new address of Donald MacLeod's webpage
• 15/04/02: Have discovered Ann McLean at Altandhu 41-15 was a daughter of Murdo McKenzie and Mary McLean of Reiff, have added notes there, but updates needed to later files, and to the many Households at Reiff and Altandhu where she had siblings
• 06/04/02: Found there were three Households in 1871 Achiltibuie I had earlier missed transcribing! Have added them from 71-113 to 71-115; the schoolteacher, and two McLean familys
• 05/04/02: Have added a file "Hugh's Letter", based on the letter Marg transcribed, it lists 32 relatives Hugh McDonald visited in 1918
• 29/03/02: Based on info in a 1918 letter Marg Ward has transcribed and sent me I have added the McLean family at Tanera 91-3, noting the wife there, Annabella, was a relative of Marg's, one of the McLeods from Dornie. Made links in notes at Tanera 81-3, Dornie 71-33, and Achiltibuie 81-1

A daughter of the family, eventually marries the brother of an ancestor of George McLean of Inverness, and there is much needed edits to the McLean familys at Achduart to show the ancestry of George, and how the family ties into Kates. • 26/02/02: Added a Tinker's family (McNeils) at Polglass 81-3, a Campbell family at 81-4, and a Stewart family at 81-5 with links to the familys at Badenscallie 81-24, 81-25, 81-26
• 25/02/02: Added details from Parish Register regarding 1850 marriage of Murdoch McKenzie to Cursty Morrison, edit at Polglass 51-34 and 61-15, Achnahaird 51-60, Badentarbet 41-2 and 41-9
• 22/02/02: Made edits to Reiff 91-24, 91-32, 91-33, 91-34, 91-35, and in strays.htm to 91rachel and 81rachel based on the 1901 info from Kate. As well as showing the McLennan-McLeod relationship, most of the edits were to show the sibling relationship between various Reiff McLeods not clear previously.
• 21/02/02: Kate Ferris has sent me some details from three Households at Reiff in the 1901 census, and has pointed out that Barbara McLeod of Achnahaird 81-6 married John McLennan of Reiff 91-32. Based on that I have transcribed Achnahaird 91-4, and notes the relationship in Achnahaird 81-6 and 91-4, am now working on updating the Reiff 1891 Households mentioned in the 1901 data.
• 20/02/02: Made links from the McLean family at Altandhu 41-12 to the Stewart family at Achiltibuie (Polglass) 41-12, and Polglass 51-53
• 07/02/02: Noted that Penelope MacLeod at Polglass 51-62 was a daughter of Murdo McDonald, the weaver on Tanera, made edits there and to Achiltibuie 41-19, Tanera 41-10, 51-10, edits needed to 1861 and later notes!
• 04/02/02: Realized I had missed transcribing two 1871 Achnahaird Households! Have added 71-96, a McLeod Household, and 71-97, a Morrison Household

• 25/01/02: Realized Flora Campbell, wife of Evander Campbell, a miller at Achnacarnan (or Acheninver) through much of the 19th century was a daughter of Murdo McLeod and Margaret McLean of Reiff, and so is a gt-gt-gt-gt-aunt of mine!
  Made appropriate edits to Achnacarnan 41-1, 51-11, Acheninver 61-10, 71-99, 81-1, Ardmair 51-41, 61-51, 71-20. Need to make edits to the Reiff Households where she had relatives.

• 03/04/01: Noted that there are no 1871 listings for Badentarbet. Possibly any familys there were enumerated with Polbain. Tanera and Polbain are the last two incomplete 1871 communities

• 23/03/01: While trying to edit in a bunch of data recently emailed from Kate Ferris I took a look at some Parish Register marriages I had not earlier tied to transcriptions... found one for Murdoch McKenzie of Badenscallie to Christian McCasgail of Inverkirkaig sorted out a lot of unlinked Households! The family moved to Polglass by 1851, where the enumerator mistook their surname as "MacLean", and in 1871 and 1881 were at Achlochan. See Badenscallie 41-17, Polglass 51-68 and 61-3, then Achlochan 71-67 and 81-1, includes links to McLeods and Grants...
• 18/03/01: Made links for the first three Badenscallie Households in 1871 (includes some links to Polglass families), added the first half of the Stewart family at Badenscallie 71-89, and also added a McLeod family at Badenscallie 71-88
• 17/03/01: Completed 1861 Tanera Households. Means transcriptions for Coigach now complete for 1841 to 1861, excluding those communities like Isle Martin and Achendrean that do not show up in all censuses as in Coigach
