Achiltibuie : Transcripts and Notes

These notes are based on my own transcriptions, and those forwarded to me by other people, along with info from other sources, credited as the info appears. This file only includes Achiltibuie, but I am slowly transcribing the rest of Coigach, and many other files link from my homepage at index.htm

Many of the notes in this file originated with information in emails from other people with roots in Coigach. I have collected email addresses and websites of those people in a file; CONTACTS AND SOURCES

Achiltibuie

Achiltibuie is the largest community in Coigach, its name possibly means "Field of the yellow haired boy", referring to one of the three brothers that myth says settled the peninsula.

Various rental lists are excerpted by John R. Baldwin in the book "Peoples & Settlement in North-West Ross" (SOURCE), primarly from papers in the National Archives of Scotland ("NAS"). His research and other sources show Achiltibuie held by;

In addition to the families listed below, the Parish Register includes christenings and marriages that I have not yet been able to match to their families.

Marriages (all people listed as from Achiltibuie, unless otherwise noted);

Achiltibuie 1767

John B. Baldwin on page 363 of "Peoples & Settlement in North-West Ross" writes;

"In 1767, for instance, eight sub-tenants in Achiltibuie were removed to furthest Rubha na breige to make room for Lieut. Daniel Mackenzie, then living in Lewis. In 1777 the five who remained at Runabreck (the others had seemingly left in 1776) were again removed so that the Achnahaird tacksman could have Runabreck as a grazing. Four of these five settled on Tanera, and were evicted yet again in 1784 when the fishing station was established. Small wonder that on occasion the people refused to remove and that the factor found them `so stubborn and unruly' (Bangor-Jones ms. 1988. 8)."

The following three lists document in part the movements noted in that paragraph. Descendants of Katherine Mackenzie and her son Alexander are well traced, and there is a likelyhood some of the others named can also be traced; for example Hugh Ross and his wife Christian MacLeod look probably to be ancestors of the Ross family that continues to this day at Reiff. Others may turn up as among the passengers on the ship Hector to Pictou, Nova Scotia, in 1773.

The first list besides Katherine and Alexander includes 18 names, one noted as "an indigent woman", this corresponds with another Petition, E746/113/60(1), from Katherine and Alexander noting "with 17 more weak Families living on the Farm of of Aklibuy". The second list notes only 12 other names, corresponding with another Petition, E746/113/58, in which Katherine notes that besides the petitioners (herself and her son), twelve other families would also be ruined if the farm was given to Daniel Mackenzie. Likely five in the first list were Cotters, not having a share of the farming land, exchanging their labour for the right to live there.

This list of Tenants at Achiltibuie comes from a Petition from the subtenants at Achiltibuie to the Commissioners of Forfeited Estates, undated, but noted on the cover as read 15 June, 1767. It's reference number at the National Archives of Scotland is "E746/113/00001" This is a Petition from the principal tenant at Achiltibuie, Katherine MacKenzie, her son Alexander, and their subtenants to the Commissioners of Forfeited Estates, undated, but from context certainly some time 1767. It's reference number at the National Archives of Scotland is "E746/113/70" The Mitford Manuscript (mitford.htm) includes a list of Coigach tenants and subtenants. In 1769 they all signed an "Obligation to Remove", stating they had possesion since the Estate was annexed to the Crown following the 1745 Rebellion, and that as proper paperwork was lacking ("Tacks" Etc.) "we bind and oblige us our heirs and successors to flit and remove from our respective farms and possessions at the term of Whitsunday or 15th day of May New stile in the year 1770, or at any subsequent term of Whitsunday upon 40 days warning"

At the foot of this document are two sets of initials that do not clearly match the names at the top, one was "HML" (4), I think that was for this person, as a matching Kenneth does not appear in the later lists, but there is a "Hugh MacLeod", not matched in this list.

At the foot of this document are two sets of initials that do not clearly match the names at the top, one was "DG" (9), I think that was for a Donald Kerr (or "Car"), a son of this person, as a matching Janet does not appear in the later lists, but there are two Donald Kerrs, only one of which is matched in this list.

Alexander Kerr Family

In addition to the people and familys noted below there was a marriage registration in the O.P.R. 2 July 1821 of "Alexander Kerr Achiltibuie to Cathrine MacKenzie Ullapool". I think it likely Alexander was a brother of Roderick Kerr of Achiltibuie (see Achiltibuie 41-41), Donald Kerr at Reiff (see Reiff 41-11), and Mary McKenzie also at Reiff (see Reiff 41-8).

There are four christening registrations to an Alexander Kerr that may be to this family, or possibly to two separate Alexander Kerrs, it is confused by two of them being listed at Ullapool, and two of them at Ardmair (which is close to Ullapool).

Further confusing it is that the third lists the parent as "Widow of Alex Kerr", seeming to draw a line between the third and fourth christenings, till you consider christenings sometimes happened years after births!

If things were simple, they would not be so much fun!

The christenings were;

  1. Margaret, c.14 May 1822 at Ullapool
  2. John, c.1 July 1824 at Ardmair
  3. Donald, c.5 April 1829 to the Widow of Alex Kerr at Ullapool
  4. John, c.2 May 1830 at Ardmair

Notes on this Household:

This Household appears in Enumeration District 12, page 11. All were born in the County.

Though enumerated as part of Achiltibuie, this family appears in the 1851 census at Polglass 51-44, all the Polglass families seem to have been counted as part of Achiltibuie in 1841! Roderick and Christian are not in the 1851 census, likely they die before then.

A marriage was registered as 5 March, 1833 of Duncan MacKenzie, Achiltibuie, to Ann MacKenzie, Badinscally.

The 1798 Militia List notes a Roderick MacKenzie at Badinscally, likely the Roderick and Christian above are Ann's parents.

The Parish Register includes the marriage 31 March 1825 of Rodk. Grant Airdmare and Annabel McGregor Achiltibuie.

Roderick was first married to Margaret McDonald, the Parish Register records the marriage 12 February 1819 of Roderick Grant Ullapool to Margaret McDond., writing of her residence is unclear, either "Airdendrean" or "Achendrean". The latter is most likely, given there were a number of other Achendrean MacDonalds at Badenscallie and a son of Roderick and his first wife, Alexander, is in this census at Badenscallie 41-4, with Roderick's sister Catherine, and other relatives.

Though enumerated as part of Achiltibuie, this family appears in the 1851 census at Polglass 51-52, all the Polglass families seem to have been counted as part of Achiltibuie in 1841!

The Parish Register includes 15 January 1824 the marriage of "Murdo McLeod Inverstrathan Coigach and Anable Lamont Bradach Assaint". Anabella dies a few months after the 1861 census, her death registration says her parents were William Lamont and Margaret McLeod. Her surname listed as "McLean" above is likely either a mistake, or from a first marriage.

Young William is in the next census as Servant to a McKenzie family at Achiltibuie 51-74. His marriage was registered 10 February 1859 to Margaret McLeod, her parents are in this census at Achiltibuie 41-45 with a "40" year old "Peggy McLeod", possibly Margaret with a mistranscribed age. William and Margaret are together in the 1861 census at Achiltibuie 61-41.

Murdoch and Anable were gt-gt-grandparents of Jim McGreal in Hamilton Ontario (CONTACT INFO) through their daughter Abigail (in the next census).

Notes on this Household:

This Household appears in Enumeration District 12, pages 13 and 14. All were marked as born in the County.

Though enumerated as part of Achiltibuie, this family appears in the 1851 census at Polglass 51-53, all the Polglass families seem to have been counted as part of Achiltibuie in 1841!

The Parish Register records the marriage 9 January 1850 of Kenneth McLean of Altandubh to Christina Stewart of Polglass, daughter of Duncan Stewart there. Kenneth is in this census with his family at Altandhu 41-15. In the 1851 census Christina "Chirsty" and Kenneth are with his parents, an unmarried brother of Kenneth named Alexander, and a six month old son Duncan, clearly named for Christina's father, at Altandhu 51-99.

The Parish Register records the christening of a Murdoch Stewart to a father Duncan at Achiltibuie 15 July 1822. The Parish Register includes the marriage registration of Murdoch Stewart to a Christina McLeod 28 February 1850.

That Christina dies in childbirth or shortly after of a daughter also named Christina or Chirsty, 18 December 1850 aged 25 years, Murdoch erects a stone to her honour in the Badenscallie burial ground.

Notes on this Household:

This Household appears in Enumeration District 12, page 14. All were born in the County.

Though enumerated as part of Achiltibuie, this family appears in the 1851 census at Polglass 51-54, all the Polglass families seem to have been counted as part of Achiltibuie in 1841!

Henny is missing in the 1851 census, though with them again in 1861.

Donald and Ann Campbell are married, Ann is a daughter of John and Henny. The 1871 census lists both Ann and her sister Isabella above as born at Milton in Gairloch Parish. In the 1851 census Donald and Ann's Household is next to her parents, probably on the same croft, at Polglass 51-55. Like Henny, Donald is also away in the 1851 census, perhaps they were visiting relatives in Gairloch?

Donald Campbell was christened 7 February 1816 at Badenscallie to father Angus Campbell. His Widowed mother Mary Stewart and six of his siblings are in this census at Badenscallie 41-23, and Murdo Campbell at Achadh' a Bhraige 41-1 is his brother.

Notes on this Household:

This Household appears in Enumeration District 12, page 13. All were born in the County. The listing of Roderick's age in the females column was clearly a mistake, as Roderick appears in later censuses as a boy.

Though enumerated as part of Achiltibuie, this family appears in the 1851 census at Polglass 51-60, all the Polglass families seem to have been counted as part of Achiltibuie in 1841!

John dies 1877 at Polglass. The registration notes that his wife Mary had been Maiden Surname MacLeod, and his parents had been Roderick MacLeod and Margaret, Maiden Surname not known to the Informant.

Though enumerated as part of Achiltibuie, these two sisters appear in the 1851 census at Polglass 51-57, all the Polglass families seem to have been counted as part of Achiltibuie in 1841!

The 1851 census shows both sisters as unmarried, and says both were born at Lochbroom, whereas the 1861 census at Polglass 61-7 agrees with this one, in that the surviving sister (Peggy), is then said to have been born in Assynt.

Notes on this Household:

This Household appears in Enumeration District 15, page 13. The first six were not born in the County, the others were.

Though enumerated as part of Achiltibuie, this family appears in the 1851 census at Polglass 51-58, all the Polglass families seem to have been counted as part of Achiltibuie in 1841!

The 1851 census says Norman and Lauchlin were born at Assynt, Peggy at "Cathness Dunnet", and the three youngest children at Lochbroom.

I think Lachlin was enumerated twice, here, and as servant to a McLeod family at Achadh' a Bhraigh 41-2.

At the Badenscallie burial ground there is a flat stone inscribed; "Norman McRae, late catechist, Free Church of Scotland, parish of Lochbroom, died 20.3.1853 aged 70 years"

Donald McRae died 7 Apr 1869 aged 49, He was a teacher and the Registrar up to that time. The entry gives his mother's maiden name as Janet Kerr & says his father Norman was previously a soldier in the 93d Regt. [later called the Sutherland Highlanders].

The Parish Register includes the christening of Mary above 7 February 1830 at Achiltibuie to a father named Norman McRae.

The Parish Register records the marriage 17 February 1848 of young Jane above to Alexander McKenzie whose residence is written unclear, but appears to be "Ballachladish. Par. of Assynt".

Notes on this Household:

This Household appears in Enumeration District 12, page 15. All were born in the County. There is a tick mark between Rory and Barbara's names, indicating she was not part of the family. No surname (or ditto) was marked for Barbara.

Though enumerated as part of Achiltibuie, this family appears in the 1851 census at Polglass 51-62, all the Polglass families seem to have been counted as part of Achiltibuie in 1841!

I think it likely this family originated at Strathcanaird, the 1871 census gives Hugh's birthplace as there, and the name "Jane" is common there.

Young Roderick ("Rory" above) is Head of Household in the next census married to Penelope MacDonald, and with his Widowed mother Ann as part of the Household. The Parish Register records the marriage 1 June, 1847 of Roderick McLeod a Crofter at Achiltibuie, to Penelope McDonald. She is listed as resident at Ullapool, but daughter of Murdo McDonald, a weaver on Isle Tanera. Cannot see Penelope in this census, but her Widowed father and other relatives are at Tanera 41-10.

The death of Jane (single) was registered as 14 July, 1860 at Polglass, Informant being her nephew James McLeod. The death registration lists her parents (both dead then) as Roderick McLeod and Ann McKenzie.

Hugh is in the 1851 census at Polglass 51-47 married to Anne Fraser with three children, Anne is in this census with her family at Achiltibuie 41-31.

Kenneth MacLeod in the next Household, Achiltibuie 41-20, is noted in his 1868 death registration as a son of Roderick and Ann, that registration confirms Ann's Maiden Surname was McKenzie.

This Household appears in Enumeration District 12, page 16. All were born in the County.

In the 1851 census this family is at Achiltibuie 51-73.

Flora marries Norman Campbell 11 March 1847, he is in this census with his family at Achiltibuie 41-50. That registration has listed in the column for father of the bride "Ken. Campbell, Achultibuie", I think the registrar accidently put in the name of father of the groom. Flora and Norman are in the 1851 census with children and Norman's mother Mary at Achiltibuie 51-96.

Flora's 1883 death registration gives Maiden Surname of her mother Catherine, above, as Graham.

Notes on this Household:

This Household appears in Enumeration District 12, page 16. All were born in the County.

In the 1851 census the three sons are at Achiltibuie 51-71, with then 17 year old John as Head of Household.

The Parish Register records the marriage 10 February 1826 of Alexander McLeod and Mary McDonald, their place of residence disapears into the fold of the page, but I think it reads "Riff", making Mary a child of John McDonald and Ketty McLeod there, see Reiff 41-18. The relationship is confirmed in the 1881 census, where Donald McDonald of Reiff is shown to be an uncle of Mary's son John.

Murdina is in the next census as Servant to a McLeod family at Polglass 51-47. She marries 3 January 1856 to Roderick McKenzie, (living three Households away from her in 1851 at Polglass 51-44), they are in the 1861 census with two children at Polglass 61-23. (One of Murdina's children, Alexander, is in the 1861 census with her mother Mary and brother John at Achiltibuie 61-37).

Not certain, but I think the 33 year old Widow Johanna McLeod in 1861 at Polglass 61-11 is the Johanna above.

In the 1851 census this family is at Achiltibuie 51-70.

The death of George is registered as 1868 at Achiltibuie aged 75 years, Joiner, Widower. His parents are noted as having been Kenneth McKenzie and Mary, Maiden Surname McKenzie.

The registration of Janet's death in 1863 notes her parents had been Donald MacLeod and Flora Mackenzie, Ann Matheson at Achiltibuie 41-32 is her sister.

I have not yet searched for birth registrations for all the children, but Colin was christened 13 June, 1830, with his father listed as "George MacKenzie Carpenter Badinscally".

George is in the 1827 Militia List at Badinscallie, occupation as "Carpenter".

Notes on this Household:

This Household appears in Enumeration District 12, page 18. All were born in the County. Though Allan was enumerated in the females column, I am sure that was a mistake.

In the 1851 census this family is at Achiltibuie 51-80.

Before the next census Angus marries someone named Flora, I think probably it is the marriage recorded in the I.G.I. as 26 March 1844 in the neighbouring Parish of Assynt with bride as Flora McLeod. They are in the 1851 census at Achiltibuie 51-93, with a servant Elizabeth McLeod, likely a sister of Flora.

Notes on this Household:

This Household appears in Enumeration District 12, page 18. All except the older Donald Cameron were born in the County.

By time of the 1851 census Donald and Catharine MacAulay have died, and the Cameron family is at Achiltibuie 51-79, Donald Cameron has also died by then, but his son John's own death registration confirms parents as having been Donald Cameron and Margaret MacAulay.

The I.G.I. records the marriage of young John above in 1854 to Alexandrina McLeod. John dies in 1855, his death registration names his parents as Donald Cameron and Margaret McAulay, both then deceased.

This family seems to have earlier been at Badentarbet; the Parish Register includes the marriage of Donald Cameron of Glenelg to Peggy MacAulay of Badintarbit 11 May 1820. Donald MacAulay is at Badintarbit in the 1798 Militia List.

There was also a MacAulay family at Dornie, which is close by Badentarbet. The Parish Register includes the marriage 6 February 1815 of Mary McDonald from Dornie to John McAulay from Lochinver in Assynt Parish. Also included from 1816 to 1833 are the christenings of eight children to John MacAulay there.

I suspect John MacAulay of Dornie was a son of Donald and Katharine above.

The Parish Register also includes the christening 15 May 1821 of Malcolm McAulay to Alexander at Badentarbet.

Notes on this Household:

This Household appears in Enumeration District 12, page 19. All except Margaret Kook were born in the County.

Most of these siblings are accounted for;

  1. Donald marries 18 January 1849 to Janet Robertson. Janet is in this census with her family at Achduart 41-2. They are in the 1851 census with his unmarried brothers Murdo and Roderick, and a niece Margret Rutherford at Achiltibuie 51-77.
  2. Murdoch is unmarried in the 1851 census with Donald's family.
  3. Roderick is with his brother Donald's family in 1851 and '61, then marries 10 March 1864 to Mary McLeod.
  4. Barbara is probably the Barbara Fraser who marries 9 December 1858 to Alexander McLennan, cannot see her in other censuses.
  5. Margaret marries Kenneth McLeod before the 1851 census, they are then at Achiltibuie 51-92.
  6. Hughina marries 22 February, 1850 to John McLean, they are in the 1851 census at Achiltibuie 51-72. John is in this census with his MacLean family at Achiltibuie 41-49.
  7. Annable marries sometime before the 1851 census to Hugh McLeod, he is in this census with his family at Achiltibuie 41-19, they are in the 1851 census at Polglass 51-47.

Donald's 1897 death registration notes his parents had been another Donald Fraser, and Margaret, Maiden Surname MacKenzie.

Notes on this Household:

This Household appears in Enumeration District 12, page 19. All were born in the County.

In the 1851 census this family is at Achiltibuie 51-76, with Roderick's occupation now Innkeeper!

The 1827 Militia List has two consecutive Mathesons at Achiltibuie, both under 30 years of age, likely brothers. See Duncan, a Merchant, and Roderick, a Tenant.

Ann's death is registered 1878 at Achiltibuie, her parents noted as having been Donald MacLeod and Flora, Maiden Surname MacKenzie. Janet MacKenzie at Achiltibuie 41-28 is her sister.

The Parish Register includes the marriage 3 March, 1826 of Roderick Matheson of Achiltibuie to Ann McLeod of Badinscally.

The Parish Register also includes some christenings at Achiltibuie to a Roderick Matheson;

  1. Mary, christened 15 April, 1827,
  2. Duncan, christened 25 October, 1829.

Also registered is the marriage 22 February, 1820 of Roderick Stewart of Badenscaly to Mary Matheson of Achiltibuie. I assume Mary was a sister of Roderick Matheson above, see Badenscallie 41-8.

The civil registration index lists the marriage of Donald MacKenzie to Flora Matheson 10 March, 1859. Donald is in this census at Achiltibuie 41-10. Donald and Flora are in the 1861 census with their youngest child at Achiltibuie 61-39.

Margaret (the 10 year old "Peggy" above) marries 16 January, 1862, to John McLeod, who is in this census at Achiltibuie 41-36. They are in the 1881 census at Achiltibuie 81-16.

Notes on this Household:

This Household appears in Enumeration District 12, page 20. All were born in the County. There is a slash mark before John MacLean's name, indicating he is not a member of the family group.

John, Donald, and Murdoch McLeod are three generations of ancestors of Ray Flint in Australia. Ray's wife Paulette (CONTACT INFO), has done lots of research on this family, and provided most of the following information.

The 1851 census at Achiltibuie 51-82 says Donald and his 15 year younger brother Roderick (the older Roderick above), were born in Gairloch.

John (the patriarch above) died before the 1851 census, so his place of birth is unknown, though probably he was also born at Gairloch.

Donald died 28 March 1858 and is buried in the burial ground on Isle Tanera. As Badenscallie took most of the mainland Coigach burials, Donald's burial on Tanera suggests he might have had roots there or on one of the other Summer Isles.

Donald's death registration says he was the widower of Isabella Stewart.

The Parish Register shows at least four births of children above to Donald at Achiltibuie;

  1. John, c.24 April 1820, marries 16 January 1862 to Margaret Matheson. I think Margaret is the 10 year old "Peggy" in this census four households before at Achiltibuie 41-32. In the 1881 census John and Margaret with four children are at Achiltibuie 81-16.
  2. Janet (as "Jannet" above), c.16 July 1821.
  3. Roderick, c.23 April 1826. He married 27 February 1862 at Lochbroom to Christina McLean (daughter of Kenneth McLean?). Roderick and Janet lived at Badenscallie, they are there in the 1871 census at Badenscallie 71-70.
  4. Murdoch McLeod, the ancestor of Ray Flint in Australia, was christened 12 June 1830, he married Flora McLeod 10 February 1859 at Ullapool. The christening date does not agree with the 5 year old age above, but other data confirms he is the son of Donald and Isabella. Flora is in this census as a four year old in the nearby community of Achlochan, see Achlochan 41-4.

Notes on this Household:

This Household appears in Enumeration District 12, page 20. All were born in the County.

In the 1851 census this family is at Achiltibuie 51-84.

I think this couple's wedding was registered in both Kincardine and Alness Parishes 1 January 1813, with Ann's maiden surname shown to be McGregor. The next Household (Achiltibuie 41-38) is a Cotter Peggy McGregor, probably a sister of Ann.

Young Margaret marries 9 March 1848 to Murdoch McKenzie, a Tenant at Badluachrach. They do not appear in later Coigach censuses, but Margaret's brother Kenneth in the 1881 census at Achiltibuie 81-17 has two young McKenzie nieces with him, and the I.G.I. records the births of three children in Lochbroom Parish to Margaret Graham and Murdoch McKenzie.

Peggy shows up as Margaret in later censuses at Badenscallie, with Janet as her daughter later using the forename "Jane". See Badenscallie 51-34.

Margaret's 1876 death registration says she was widower of Alexander McLeod, and her parents had been Duncan McGregor and Catherine, Maiden Surname McKenzie.

I think Peggy was a sister of Ann Graham in the previous Household, Achiltibuie 41-37, who was also Maiden Surname MacGregor, and lived in a humble cottage on the Graham croft.

Roderick McDonald 25
Notes on this Household:

This Household appears in Enumeration District 12, page 21. All were born in the County.

By time of the 1851 census Angus has died, Catherine as "Ketty" is with four children at Achiltibuie 51-85. Also with them then is an 8 year old grandson of Catherine; Alexander MacDonald.

The Parish Register records the marriage 22 January 1813 of Angus McLeod to Catherine Stewart, both of Achiltibuie.

This Household includes four ancestors of Donald Halley (CONTACT INFO)! Ann McLeod marries Roderick McDonald, uncertain if before or after this census. A child of Roderick and Anne was Alexander, present in the 1851 census here in Achiltibuie as an 8 year old with his MacLeod grandparents. The ancestor of Donald Halley was Jane MacDonald, born about 1843 as a daughter of Roderick and Ann. Jane shows up in the 1871 census of Achiltibuie at the Household of her uncle Donald MacLeod (above), see Achiltibuie 71-19.

Roderick, Ann, and five children (with Jane listed as "Jean") are in the 1851 census at Achendrean 51-17.

There are 10 christenings in the Parish Register with father noted as Angus MacLeod of Achiltibuie. The listings are made confusing as of the ten one of them refers to Angus McLeod Snr, and four others refer to Angus McLeod Jnr.

The wedding registered 22 January 1813 of Angus McLeod to Catherine Stewart both of Achiltibuie I assume to refer to Angus Jnr, which leads to the further assumption christenings before that date were to Angus Snr.

The one christening to Angus McLeod Snr is of a son also named Angus, in 1815. As there was also a christening that day to Angus McLeod Jnr, I assume the son was christened as an adult, hours or minutes before his own child was also christened... this illustrates that christening dates can only be used as vague pointer to dates of birth!

The following list is of children christened at Achiltibuie to an Angus McLeod. Following the names and christening dates I note the father as given in the Register, with Snr or Jnr in brackets where it is not stated and I have guessed.

  1. Barbara, c.26 January 1810 to Angus (Snr?)
  2. Margaret, c.11 August 1812 to Angus (Snr?)
  3. Angus, c.26 February 1815 to Angus Snr (presume this is christening of Angus Jnr)
  4. Ann, c.26 February 1815 to Angus Jnr
  5. John, c.1 February 1817 to Angus Jnr
  6. Catherine, c.11 May 1817 to Angus (Snr?)
  7. Christian, c.16 June 1819 to Angus Jnr
  8. Murdoch, c.31 July 1820 to Angus Jnr
  9. Georgina, c.19 Oct 1824 to Angus (Jnr?)
  10. Lexy, c.18 November 1832 to Angus (Jnr?)

This family is in the 1851 census, with Kenneth away from home, at Achiltibuie 51-83, following that the family is in censuses at Altandhu.

Ann's 1879 death registration at Altandhu notes her parents had been Angus Stewart and Flora MacLeod. Her father is in this census at Badenscallie 41-19.

Young Ann marries 24 February, 1859 to John Campbell who is in this census at Acheninver 41-2. They are in the 1861 census at Acheninver 61-11.

Sibby do 1
Notes on this Household:

This Household appears in Enumeration District 12, pages 21 and 22. All were born in the County.

In the 1851 Achiltibuie census this family shows up at Achiltibuie 51-86, and in 1861 they are at Achiltibuie 61-17.

Roderick's death is registered as 1862, aged 84 years, Widower of Isabella MacLeod. The registration notes his parents had been Alexander Kerr and Christina, Maiden Surname MacLeod.

There were various registrations mentionning an Alexander Kerr from Achiltibuie, who I think was a brother of Roderick, see Alexander Kerr Family. Roderick was also a brother of Donald Kerr at Reiff (see Reiff 41-11), and Mary McKenzie also at Reiff (see Reiff 41-8).

Neil is mentionned in the Parish Register of marriages 11 December 1851 "Neil Kerr a Labourer at Achiltibuie, to Ann McLeod, daughter of Donald MacLeod at Reiff". Ann is in the 1851 census at Reiff 51-81.

In the 1851 census Neil is a visitor at Tanera 51-9. The father of that family, Alexander McLeod, is a visitor at Achiltibuie with Neil's family! See Achiltibuie 51-86.

At the Tanera Household in 1851 Catherine MacKenzie is listed as Head, and Neil's relationship to her given as cousin. Catherine's mother Mary was a Kerr, and a sister of Donald Kerr of Reiff (see Reiff 41-11. Given Neil's cousin relationship to Catherine, I think his father Roderick was a brother of Donald and Mary at Reiff.

In 1853 Neil and Ann depart to Tasmania aboard the Sir Allan McNab, see McNab 518. They do not stay there long, and in the 1861 census are at Ullapool, see Ullapool 61-a.

I think that the first marriage of John is mentionned in the Parish Register 23 March 1846: John McKenzie, Achultibuie, and Sibla McKenzie Badinscally, Coigach.. Sibla is in this census at Badenscallie 41-5. By time of the 1851 census at Acheninver 51-14 John is widowed with a four year old child. He remarries, and later calls one of his children with his second wife "Sibla"!

Notes on this Household:

Parish Register includes the christening 28 April 1811 at Achiltibuie of Angus MacLeod to Donald.

Donald and Mary were ancestors of Hugh Kirkbride "Kirk" McKenzie in Germany through their daughter Rachel, who married John McKenzie from Reiff (son of John McKenzie and Barbara McLeod at Reiff 41-20) 20 January 1828. Young John and Rachel emigrated to Canada in 1837 with the first three of their children (four more were born in Canada), and so do not appear in this census. Kirk's wife Peggy's contact info is here; CONTACT INFO. Peggy says Mary's maiden surname was McKenzie.

John Gordon 15
Notes on this Household:

This Household appears in Enumeration District 12, page 22. Angus and Peggy were born in the County, the other two were not. There is a slash mark before John Gordon's name, indicating he was not a family member.

Angus and Jane ("Jean") are in the 1851 census with a 16 year old daughter Margaret who should be present here, see Achiltibuie 51-94, I wonder if the age of "Peggy" above might be mistranscribed? That daughter Margaret marries 10 February 1859 to William McLeod who in this census at Achiltibuie 41-11. Margaret and William are together in the 1861 census at Achiltibuie 61-41.

Angus dies 1873, his parents noted as Kenneth MacLeod and Kit, Maiden Surnamed MacKenzie.

This Household appears in Enumeration District 12, page 23. All except Ann marked as born in County. No surname or ditto marked for Katharine, but later censuses show her to be a daughter of John and Ann.

Though enumerated as part of Achiltibuie, this family appears in the 1851 census at Polglass 51-61, all the Polglass families seem to have been counted as part of Achiltibuie in 1841!

In the 1851 census this family is at Achiltibuie 51-95.

Henny's death is registered 5 February 1860 of Consumption suffered Several years, her husband Hector was Informant. The registration lists her parents as Kenneth Campbell and Mary Graham. Not certain, but I think the Mary Campbell two Households away in this census at Achiltibuie 41-50 is Henny's mother.

Hector and Henny through their daughter Margaret ("Peggy" above) born about 1845 are ancestors of Kate Ferris who lives on the Isle of Lewis (CONTACT INFO). Kate has provided lots of info on this family!

Notes on this Household:

This Household appears in Enumeration District 12, page 23. All marked as born in County.

This family is in the 1851 census with Catharine a Widow at Achiltibuie 51-97.

Catherine dies 1878 at Achiltibuie, age noted as 89 years, "Widow of Donald McLean Sailor". Her parent noted as having been a crofter John Campbell, and Margaret, Maiden Surname McDonald, who was secondly married to a McGregor.

Young John marries 22 February, 1850 to Hughina Fraser, they are in the 1851 census at Achiltibuie 51-72. Hughina is in this census with her Fraser family at Achiltibuie 41-31.

John's death is registered 1862 at Achiltibuie, aged "about 40 years", parents Donald McLean, Crofter, deceased, and Catherine, Maiden Surname Campbell.

Notes on this Household:

This Household appears in Enumeration District 12, page 24. All marked as born in County.

Norman marries Flora McLeod 11 March 1847, she is in this census with her family at Achiltibuie 41-23. That registration has listed in the column for father of the bride "Ken. Campbell, Achultibuie", I think the registrar accidently put in the name of father of the groom. Norman and Flora are in the 1851 census with children and Norman's mother Mary (above) at Achiltibuie 51-96.

Not certain, but I think Henny McKenzie two Households away at Achiltibuie 41-48 is a daughter of Mary. Henny's death registration in 1860 lists her parents as Kenneth Campbell and Mary Graham. If the Mary referred to there is the same as the Mary above, than this Mary was an ancestor of Kate Ferris who lives on the Isle of Lewis (CONTACT INFO).

In the 1841 census this family was at the village of Letters. In 1861 they are at Achiltibuie 61-30.

John and Mary were gt.gt.gt.grandparents of Cela Beale in New Zealand (CONTACT INFO), through their daughter Catherine. Cela has done lots of research on this family! She says that John McKenzie and Mary McLeay married in 1824 and lived first in Letters then moved to Achiltibuie before 1850.

Notes on this Household:

This Household is on page 24 of Enumeration District #7. All were born in Lochbroom Parish, except John MacKenzie born in Assynt.

In the 1841 census this family is at Achiltibuie 41-30, with Margaret's MacAulay parents, and her husband Donald Cameron still alive.

The I.G.I. records a marriage extracted from the Parish Register 9 February, 1854 of a John Cameron to an Alexandrina McLeod, previously I thought that was likely the Alexandrina at Achiltibuie 51-100, but have been contacted by a descendant of her, who notes a different husband. John dies 19 March 1855 of consumption suffered two years. The death registration names Alexandrina as his Widow, and his parents Donald Cameron and Margaret McAulay as both deceased. The registration also says he and Alexandrina had a daughter who died at 7 days in 1855. Names of the Informant and Witness to the Informant's signature are unclear, Informant looks to be James McLeod and George McLeod as Witness, but a third name, unusually, might also be recorded.

The Landlord of this family, the Marquis of Stafford, funded the emigration of a number of his tenants through "the Highlands and Islands Emigration Society". Hugh Campbell (CONTACT INFO), a Tasmanian historian has written an article based on the 15 families aboard the Sir Allan McNab, see corn.htm. That article gives good background on the emigration scheme. Alexander McAulay, with four of his Cameron nephews and nieces were assisted to emigrate aboard the ship Derry Castle 1 January 1854 leaving Liverpool and arriving 21 January 1855 at Portland Bay, Victoria, Australia after a lengthy journey which included mutiny by some of the crew. This family's emigrants are recorded in a database available on the Scottish Archives Network website (http://www.scan.org.uk) as household #860;

  1. Alexander McAulay, age 54
  2. Donald Cameron, age 21
  3. Johanna Cameron, age 28
  4. Mary Cameron, age 30
  5. Iain Cameron, age 18, clearly a mistranscription for Jean above, recorded as "Jane" in 1841.

Notes on this Household:

This Household is on pages 24 and 25 of Enumeration District #7. All were born in Lochbroom Parish.

In the 1841 census this family was at Achiltibuie 41-29.

The death of George is registered as 10 February, 1855 at Achiltibuie, aged 84 years, married to Ann, Maiden Surname McKenzie, occupation "Weaver and Tenant". His parents are noted as having been John MacKenzie and Mary, Maiden Surname MacLeod. He is noted as born at Strathcanaird, and lived the last 16 years at Achiltibuie. The registration notes his children's names and ages (presumably all born at Strathcanaird) were;

By time of the 1861 census at Achiltibuie 61-32 Ann is living the home of Alexander and his wife, along with his sisters Anabella and Ann.

The Civil Registration index shows the marriage 5 March, 1857 of Alexander McKenzie to "Cathren" McKenzie.

Since the last census a son of George and Ann named Angus, who was with them then, has married a woman named Flora. That couple is in this census at Achiltibuie 51-93.

The death of Alexander is registered as 1888 at Achiltibuie, aged 80 years, married to "Kate Mackenzie", his parents noted as having been George MacKenzie and Anne, Maiden Surname MacKenzie, Informant his son John.

Notes on this Household:

This Household is on page 25 of Enumeration District #7. Alexander and Meddlin were born at Gairloch, their children in Lochbroom Parish.

In the 1841 census this family was on the south shore of Lochbroom at Badluarch (Enumeration District #7, Page 4), with them then were two older daughters, Jane and Issobella. In 1861 the main Household is at Achiltibuie 61-26.

Alexander dies 19 August, 1865 at Achiltibuie, Informant his son Kenneth, the death registration shows his parents had been Donald MacLean, Smith, and Janet, maiden surname left blank, and his wife Magdalene ("Meddlin" above) was maiden surnamed MacKenzie.

Kenneth marries 8 November 1855 to Ann Campbell, they are in the 1861 census in the Household next to his parents (on the same croft?) at Achiltibuie 61-27.

Notes on this Household:

This Household is on page 25 of Enumeration District #7. All were born in Lochbroom Parish.

In the 1841 census this family was at Achiltibuie 41-36.

The Parish Register records the marriage of John McLeod to Margt. Matheson 12 February 1852, they are in the next census with three children at Achiltibuie 61-23.

In the 1861 census the older and younger Roderick, and Jessie (as Janet) are all still unmarried and living at Achiltibuie 61-24.

Murdoch McLeod married Flora McLeod 10 February 1859 at Ullapool, in 1861 they are at Achiltibuie 61-24.

Donald and Murdo are ancestors of Ray Flint in Australia. Ray's wife Paulette (CONTACT INFO), has done lots of research on this family, and provided most of the following information.

Donald died 28 March 1858 and is buried in the burial ground on Isle Tanera. As Badenscallie took most of the mainland Coigach burials, Donald's burial on Tanera suggests he might have had roots there or on one of the other Summer Isles (perhaps his wife was from there?).

Donald's death registration says he was the widower of Isabella Stewart.

The Parish Register shows at least four christenings of children above to Donald at Achiltibuie;

  1. John, c.24 April 1820, marries 16 January 1862 to Margaret Matheson. I think Margaret was the 10 year old "Peggy" in the 1841 census at Achiltibuie 41-32. In the 1881 census John and Margaret with four children are at Achiltibuie 81-16.
  2. Janet (as "Jessie" above), c.16 July 1821.
Flora was in the 1841 census as a four year old in the nearby community of Achlochan, see Achlochan 41-4. In the 1861 census Murdoch and Flora are in the Household next to Roderick (same croft?) at Achiltibuie 61-25.

Notes on this Household:

This Household is on pages 25 and 26 of Enumeration District #7. All were born in Lochbroom Parish.

In the 1841 census this family is at Achiltibuie 41-40, in 1851 they are at Altandhu 61-21.

Ann's 1879 death registration at Altandhu notes her parents had been Angus Stewart and Flora MacLeod. Her father is in this census at Badenscallie 51-42.

Notes on this Household:

This Household is on page 26 of Enumeration District #7. All were born in Lochbroom Parish.

In the 1841 census this family is at Achiltibuie 41-37. Donald is Widowed by time of the next census, living at Achiltibuie 61-22.

Ann's death is registered as 12 January, 1856 at Achiltibuie, aged 68 years, her parents are noted as having been Duncan McGregor and Annabella, Maiden Surname MacKenzie. Informant of the death was her nephew, Samuel Grant, who is in this census at Polglass 51-50, Samuel's mother Annabella there was a sister of Ann.

Before the 1861 census John marries to Isabella McLeod, and they are living in the Household previous to his father, Achiltibuie 61-20, probably on the same croft.

Ann MacDonald and her daughter Rodina are in the 1861 census at Achiltibuie 61-31.

I.G.I. has marriage 10 February, 1837 of Ann Graham to Roderick McDonald at Killearnan. Ann's daughters Peggy and Roderica "Rodina" were both christened at Lochbroom; Peggy 22 February, 1841, and Roderica 21 November, 1842. My guess is Roderica was born shortly after the death of her father.

In the 1841 census Roderick McDonald, Anne, and two of their children, Donald and Margaret, were one of the two families in a hamlet on the south side of Lochbroom opposite Ullapool, see Altnaherie 41-2.

Alexander Kerr was from Reiff, in the 1841 census he was there with his family at Reiff 41-11. Two years after this census he emigrates to Tasmania aboard the Sir Allan McNab with his unmarried sister Chirsty, a sister Margaret who married Kenneth MacKenzie of Reiff, and various other relatives, see mcnab.htm.

Notes on this Household:

This Household is on page 26 of Enumeration District #7. All were born in Lochbroom Parish.

This family was in the 1841 census at at Achiltibuie 41-39. Since then Catherine "Ketty"s husband Angus has died. With them in 1841 was a daughter Ann, and a 25-29 year old Roderick McDonald. Though I cannot find a birth registration for Alexander above, there is a marriage registered 12 September 1844 at Stornaway of Roderick McDonald to Annie McLeod.

In 1861 this family is at Achiltibuie 61-18.

Roderick MacDonald of Strathcanaird, and Ann McLeod of this family, are ancestors of Donald Halley (CONTACT INFO). The ancestor of Donald Halley was Jane MacDonald, born about 1843 as a daughter of Roderick and Ann. Jane shows up in the 1871 census of Achiltibuie at the Household of her uncle Donald MacLeod (above), see Achiltibuie 71-19.

Alexander above was a child of Roderick and Anne. Cannot clearly find a birth registration for Alexander, but there is a christening registered 12 September 1844 at Stornoway of an Alexander to a Roderick McDonald and an Annie McLeod which might refer to him....

Roderick, Ann, and five children (with Jane listed as "Jean") are in the 1851 census at Achendrean 51-17.

Notes on this Household:

This Household is on page 27 of Enumeration District #7. All were born in Lochbroom Parish.

In the 1841 census this family was at Achiltibuie 41-41, in 1861 they are at Achiltibuie 61-17.

Roderick's death is registered as 1862, aged 84 years, Widower of Isabella MacLeod. The registration notes his parents had been Alexander Kerr and Christina, Maiden Surname MacLeod.

A son Neil was in the 1841 census, but missing now. He is mentionned in the Parish Register of marriages 11 December, 1851 "Neil Kerr a Labourer at Achiltibuie, to Ann McLeod, daughter of Donald MacLeod at Reiff". Ann was in the 1851 census at Reiff 51-81.

At time of this census Neil is at Tanera 51-9, a visitor to his cousin Mary MacKenzie of Reiff, whose mother Mary Kerr was a sister of Roderick Kerr, Neil's father. The husband in that Household, Alexander McLeod, is I think the visitor in this Household!

In 1853 Neil and Ann emigrated to Tasmania aboard the Sir Allan McNab, see McNab 518. They did not stay there long, and in the 1861 census are at Ullapool, see Ullapool 61-a.

Young Ann above marries 25 December to Roderick McLeod. I am uncertain which McLeod family he was part of. They are in the 1861 census at Achiltibuie 61-16, along with three young children.

Alexander MacLeod with his family from Tanera also emigrated aboard the Sir Allan McNab, see McNab 522.
