1825 Lochbroom Militia List

INTRODUCTION

The info in this file comes primarly from a manuscript in the National Archives of Scotland in the collection known as "the Cromartie Estate papers". It, along with the 1826 and 1827 lists, is part of a bundle of papers identified as GD 305/2/557 A historian in Scotland, Malcolm Bangor-Jones (Malcolm.Bangor-Jones@scotland.gsi.gov.uk), has obtained and mailed me the photocopy the following annotated transcription comes from.

The papers are copyright till 31 December 2039 by the Earl of Cromartie. Alan McKenzie (alan@mkz.com), the Earl's Lieutenant in Canada and editor of the Clan MacKenzie Canada newsletter, has contacted the Earl and received permission and encouragement to reproduce the list in database form on the internet, this file.

The Militia List was supposed to record every male in the Parish from 16 to 60, but clearly from other records such as newspaper reports and fathers named in christenings in the Parish Register there are people missing.

Surnames in the list usually used the form "Mc", rather than "Mac". However, often the letter "c" was underlined with a double dot below, a common contraction at that time indicating a dropped vowell, syllable, or letters. For this file those cases are transcribed with the "c" in superscript, underlined.

Likewise "Roderick" is often "Rod^k", and "Donald" as "Don^d", with double dots under the last letter. Possibly in a later version of this file I might expand all such contractions.

Reasons for exemption included supporting three or more children, unfortunately for genealogists all with such an exemption were simply recorded as "3 Children".

Many of the places have only a few names listed, so creating a jump table based on communitys has not been used in this file, instead the names are presented simply in the order they appear.

However, as each person listed was given a consecutive number, I have used that as an identifier, and when some other file refers to a person as being on this list, the referral will use that number. For instance, a link to my gt-gt-grandfather, Donald MacDonald, will say he is in the 1825 Militia list at 25militia-167.

Many of the people in the list show up in other records, such as the Parish Register or the censuses, rather than clutter up this list with such data and links to other files, I follow each listing with a link to a notes file.

"I believe that he was born in Mid-Fearn in the Parish of Edderton in 1800 and came to Canada in 1830 to work for the Hudson Bay Company. He spent the rest of his life in Canada, in the Saguenay area in Quebec and died in 1883. One of his grandsons, Arthur Ross, became a famous hockey player and later a coach with the Boston Bruins of the National Hockey League."

Mario notes the biographical sheet from the Hudson Bay Company for Simon has him living at Ullapool when he signed on with the company in 1830, and had occupation then as cooper.

Donald's descendants include Donald MacDonald-Ross in Canada, (CONTACT INFO), and Margaret Ward in N.Z. (CONTACT INFO)
Alexander MacDonald two listings away at #169 was likely a brother of Donald, though Donald's mentions in the OPR have him at Reiff, and Alexander's place him at Achnahaird, this list has them both resident at "Aultanaghauna".
Donald's father John MacDonald was over 60 in 1825, and so is not in this list.

168 Norman MacLeod Labourer Glackskealach Under 30 Spelling of the placename is indistinct.

169 Alexander MacDonald Labourer Aultanaghauna Under 30 Alexander does not appear in the 1826 and 1827 Militia lists, or the 1841 census, however I think he is the Alexander listed in the OPR as living at Achnahaird in his marriage and christenings of three of his children from 1818 through 1833. Likely he was a brother of Donald MacDonald two up in this list at #167 who was also listed as resident at "Aultanaghauna".
The OPR records the marriage 19 February 1818 of Alexander MacDonald Achnahaird to Christian MacLean there.
Also recorded are three christenings to Alexander MacDonald at Achnahaird;
