Elliott (Eliott) Raymond RICE
Elliott (Eliott) Raymond RICE was the third of five sons born to Thomas A. Rice and Elsa REYNOLDS RICE. Elliott was born on January 29, 1853 in Licking County (Fallsburg Township), Ohio. He and his family moved from Licking and Knox Counties in Ohio to Seneca (LaSalle County), Illinois in the 1860s. The family stayed in Illinois for three years after his father's death in 1870. In the late summer of 1873, Elliott, with his widowed mother and four brothers headed west. After the family crossed the Missouri, the road was lined with people on their way to Kansas. This made it difficult to find water and feed for the stock, but Elliott would ride ahead of the wagons. On finding a good place to camp, he would wait until the teams caught up with him. When the family reached Smith County, Kansas in October of that year, the prairies were as smooth as a floor, tramped by the buffaloes. Since he was twenty, he worked with his brothers on his mother's homestead.
Elliott told a story that as a lad, while journeying westward, close to the village of Cedarville, he saw an attractive girl on horseback herding cattle. He remarked, "There is the girl I am going to marry." True to his word, Elliott married Elizabeth Jane BENTON of Cedarville on January 3, 1876. Elizabeth was born on March 31, 1858 in Minnesota.
After their marriage, Elliott and Elizabeth took their own homestead close to Elliott's mother's Their first home was a log, where their two children were born: Oscar Emery on April 2, 1878 and Bertha Irene on December 2, 1879. Unfortunately, Elizabeth died May 1, 1881; she was buried in Cedar Cemetery north of Cedar (Smith County), Kansas. Elizabeth's death left a bereft, young Elliott with two small children.
After two lonely years, he married Mrs. Katherine HOBBS of Smith Center, Kansas on May 29, 1883. Katie was born in Missouri in January of 1856; she was a widow with two young sons, Melvin and Mervin HOBBS. Elliott was truly a father to the boys, and in September of 1888, Elliott and Katie became the proud parents of a daughter, Flossie.
In 1893, they built a new frame house, northeast of town, for their family of five. The large house, surrounded by shade trees and a fenced yard, was one of the most beautiful in the neighborhood. Elliott was always an active farmer and kept good horses and cattle. He took pride in clean, cultivated fields. Elliott and Katie kept a gracious hospitable home, where many guests were always welcome.
Elliott was a gentle, tender-hearted man, always considerate of others. Next to home and family was his devotion to his church. For many years, Elliott was an active worker for the Kensington Christian Church.
In the spring of 1919, Elliott and his family moved from their farm in to Kensington. He rented his land in order to devote his entire time to raising horses, mules and hogs. He had a fine Hambletonian stallion, a standard bred trotting horse for breeding and some 400 or 500 head of pure bred Duroc hogs. Elliott was one of the wealthiest and most prosperous men in the western part of Smith County, owning 480 acres of land.
Katherine passed away May 30, 1922, and was buried in the Olive Branch Cemetery south of Kensington (Smith County), Kansas. Elliott spent 20 lonely years without his wife. He suffered a paralytic stroke in 1939, which left him helpless. His daughter, Bertha and her husband Oscar, and his son, Oscar and wife, Jennie, cared for him. Elliott died December 11, 1942, and was buried next to his wife in the Olive Branch Cemetery.
