A Pretty Dual Celebration: Smith County Journal, 22 Oct 1914 reads:
Forty years ago last Saturday Mrs. Elsa RICE and five sons landed in Cedar township, this county, from their home in Illinois. They were determined to take their full share of the responsibilities that went with making a permanent home of the wild and untried west. They came to stay and they did stay. From Oct 15, 1874, to the summer of 1890 the mother had her part in framing the destinies of the members of the family. Then she passed to her reward. Last Sunday all the living members of the family and a few of the neighbors met at the old homestead now owned by one of the sons, T. M. RICE, and surrounded by the extensive land holdings of the other four brothers, to celebrate the event of the arrival of the family in this county and also to celebrate with the youngest brother, E. S. RICE, upon his recent wedding and the addition of another member to the happy and contented family now numbering but little less than 100 persons. An invitation to take a meal with any one of the RICE families has a meaning entirely understood only by those who have been so fortunate, and on the occasion of last Sunday it was a culmination of the skill of the combination of the families. The tables were arranged to accommodate 36 persons and three rounds of tables were filled; and when these had all eaten capacity quantity there was enough left for fully as many more. After the invocation of Divine blessing by Rev. D.F. McDonald of the Christian church, Kensington, the participants were served with turkey, chicken and meats, with vegetables and accessories galore, nine distinct kinds of cake, several kinds of pie and half a dozen kinds of sauce being offered along the line of dessert. The beautiful day was a factor in the pleasure of the occasion and during the afternoon the porch was used as a rostrum and the beautiful lawn for an auditorium where an interesting program was given including a short talk by Rev. McDONALD, a response by the guest of honor, E. S. RICE, reading and recitations by Miss LAHMAN and later a group photograph of the entire party superintended by Photographer PRATT and wife of Kinstington. Visiting, joking and a social good time was the later part of the program till the time for departure for home came when the benediction was pronounced. Those present at last Sunday's gathering and enjoying the feast of eatables and in a social way, besides Aunt Mary RICE, the favored kin and adored one of all the families, were Wm. RICE and wife, Emery, Lesley; E. R. RICE and wife, Oscar; J. H. RICE and wife, Hazel, Foster, Mattie; T. M. RICE and wife, Vivian; E. S. RICE and bride; M. L. "Betty Crist"
In the 1830 Census OH I found John and Catherine? Grindle with 6 children living in Logan Co. OH. I believe, put haven't proven yet that this John and Caterine Grindle are parents to my Jacob Grindle. John Grindle was born in PA 1787 died in 1855 in IN. I believe Jacob was his eldest son. In checking land records and census these Grindles lived in PA and possible in VA before moving to OH then later moving to IN.
In OH, John and Catherine bought land in Logan Co. as early as 1832, then again in 1837. In 1836 Samuel Wrightman sold land to John Grindle and this land was located in VA. In 1849 John and Catherine sold their property to Jacob Grindle and then John and Catherine moved on to Grant Co. IN Then Jacob sold his OH land and moved on to IN sometime between 1850 and 1853. The Grindles were some of the pioneers in Grant Co. OH. Their was a Wash Mcllvain amongest the early settlers their also. I will do some more checking to see if I can come up with anything else to help you.
John and Catherine both born in PA and died in IN. They had 3 sons and 3 daughters. I believe the three sons are Jacob, George, and John have no names for the daughters. I think in some of my notes if I remember correctly is that the Grindles were in KY briefly. You must be connected to this family. If you have anything else to throw at me it could help. I will start looking back over some my records and see what else I can find that might help.
Let me hear from you again.
