BIOGRAPHY: The History of the Early Settlers of Sangamon County, Illinois.CENSUS: 1850 census of Sangamon,Illinois shows: children: Susan and George Torrence living wi th the Josiah Waddell family.
BIOGRAPHY: From JoAnn Schmidt: Jschm21735@aol.com : I have a little information on the Wadde ll Family and thought it might be of some help to those of you researching this family: In Se ptember of 1849 Sarah DONNER TORRENCE died and following her in death on 24 November 1849 wa s her husband John TORRENCE. They left 5 small children orphans. At the time of the 1850 U . S. Census you will find Josiah WADDELL and his wife Elizabeth HALL WADDELL with two of th e TORRENCE children living with them. They were Susan age 10 and George age 6. Josiah WADDE LL was born 26 September 1804, in Ohio county, W. Va. He was there md. 11 Jan. 1831 to Eliza beth HALL of West Alexander, Washington county, Pa. She was also a native of Virginia. The y moved to Sangamon county, Illinois, arriving 1 March 1835, in what is now Cotton Hill towns hip. He spent 20 years in farming there. They have no children. They have since 1855, an d now live in Springfield, Sangamon county, Illinois. George TORRENCE was my mothers grandfather and I always wondered how he happened to settle i n Taylorville, Christian, Illinoisand start out working for Rheuben WILKINSON. That questio n was pretty well answered when I found the following: 1880 History of Christian County and 1918 History of Christian County: A neighbor and frien d of Josiah WADDLE by the name of WILKINSON, and his wife, died very close together. They le ft their only child, Rheuben WILKINSON a boy in his teens. He was without known relatives . Uncle Josiah took him in and gave him work. About the time he was of age, Rheuben WILKINS ON came to Christian County from Great Uncle Josiah's place near Rochester. He lived with an d worked for my grandfather John WADDLE for several years. Rheuben saved his money and bega n to buy land in May Township. When older he moved to Taylorville and helped build the town . He always said he had a great affection for the WADDLE people who raisedhim from teenage t o manhood. He lived 90 years or more. Hope this helps someone - makes me think maybe you all should look in Christian County whic h is next to Sangamon county. Jo Ann Schmidt
