Civil War Obituaries by Platt County Historical and Genealogycal Society: James Berton COFFIN James Berton Coffin was born in Pickaway county, Ohio, Jan. 1, 1840 and passed away at h is home Wednesday, March 27, 1912, aged 72 years, 2 months, 26 days. He came to Illinois wit h his parents in 1849 and in 1862 he enlisted in Company C. 167th Illinois and was discharge d in 1865 at Chester, Pa. In November 1872 he was united in marriage with Nancy Argo, who pr eceded himto the other world July 12, 1875. To them were born five children, three of whom s urvive, William of Spokane, Washington, John of Butterfield, Minn., and Solomon of Mahomet, I ll. In June 1880 he was again united in holy wedlock with Isalina Bennett, to howm were bor n eight children, all of whom survive. Besides his family he leaves a brother F. M. Coffin o f Cisco and a sister, Mrs. Geo. Valentine of Monticello, also a host of relatives and friend s to mourn his departure. While he suffered great pain with pneumonia fever which was his fa tal disease, he was never heard to mourn or complain about anything.
Mackey Cemetery Records for the burials of these COFFINS: Christopher A. son of J. B. + N. S. 31 Aug 1874, 1y rm 19d James B. 1840-1912 Nancy S., wife of J. B. S. + J.B. 25 Oct 1870, 10y, 2m, 12d (wrong age difference, see note below ) Concerning Sarah's burial date: In the book Piatt County Illinois Marriage Records 1841 - 185 3 and Cemetery Records compiled by Fern J. Richart, it gives Sarah's age at death as 10y 2m 1 2d. and the date of death as Oct 25 1870. This calculates out to having her birth be befor e their marriage by several years. I found Sarah as a 1 yo in the 1870 census but not in th e 1880. Having her be alive in the 1870 census without a second Sarah present at that time i ndicates that there was only one Sarah for this family and the book is in error for the age d ifference. It must be 1y instead of 10y.

1880 census of Piatt, Illinois shows: James and Isaline COFFIN and children: William, John F . and David S. Daughter Sarah is missing and James' wife's name is different from 1870. I n this census he shows his parents as being both born in Ohio (BURTENs). In the 1900 he show s his parents as being born in New York (COFFINs). All of this indicates a possibility tha t he and his siblings were adopted. If that was the case then the older he got the more he i dentified himself with his adoptive parent(s). Of course, census error could account for al l the discrepencies.
