A Pretty Dual Celebration: Smith County Journal, 22 Oct 1914 reads: Forty years ago last Saturday Mrs. Elsa RICE and five sons landed in Cedar township, thi s county, from their home in Illinois. They were determined to take their full share of th e responsibilities that went with making a permanent home of the wild and untried west. The y came to stay and they did stay. From Oct 15, 1874, to the summer of 1890 the mother had he r part in framing the destinies of the members of the family. Then she passed to her reward . Last Sunday all the living members of the family and a few of the neighbors met at the ol d homestead now owned by one of the sons, T. M. RICE, and surrounded by the extensive land ho ldings of the other four brothers, to celebrate the event of the arrival of the family in thi s county and also to celebrate with the youngest brother, E. S. RICE, upon his recent weddin g and the addition of another member to the happy and contented family now numbering but litt le less than 100 persons. An invitation to take a meal with any one of the RICE families ha s a meaning entirely understood only by those who have been so fortunate, and on the occasio n of last Sunday it was a culmination of the skill of the combination of the families. The t ables were arranged to accommodate 36 persons and three rounds of tables were filled; and whe n these had all eaten capacity quantity there was enough left for fully as many more. Afte r the invocation of Divine blessing by Rev. D.F. McDonald of the Christian church, Kensington , the participants were served with turkey, chicken and meats, with vegetables and accessorie s galore, nine distinct kinds of cake, several kinds of pie and half a dozen kinds of sauce b eing offered along the line of dessert. The beautiful day was a factor in the pleasure of th e occasion and during the afternoon the porch was used as a rostrum and the beautiful lawn fo r an auditorium where an interesting program was given including a short talk by Rev. McDONAL D, a response by the guest of honor, E. S. RICE, reading and recitations by Miss LAHMAN and l ater a group photograph of the entire party superintended by Photographer PRATT and wife of K instington. Visiting, joking and a social good time was the later part of the program till t he time for departure for home came when the benediction was pronounced.
