!LAND: From "Nantucket Lands and Land Owners" pg. 11; John Swaind bought out all of the India n claims to Quaize Point in Aug 1686, but was unable to obtain a grant of confimration. Onac count of the inconvenience of obtaining a confirmation of purchases made from the Indians, i t was concluded best to obtain a general grant of the entire island, which was the Dongan Pat ent, dated June 27, 1687. (can be found at the Registry of Deeds at Nantucket). It establis hed John Gardner, James Coffin, William Gayer, Peter Coffin, nathaniel Bernard, Stephen Husse y and John Macy a body corporate called the Trustees of the Freeholders of the Town of Sherbu rne.
