History of Platt County by Emma C. Piatt shows: Mr. William D. COFFIN, farmer, Bement, moved from Indiana to Piatt county about 1857. His fa ther came out about that time, but died after three years had passed. Mr. Coffin was marrie d in 1866 to Mary HOLTZ, a native of Indiana. Their children's names are Eva A., Homer and H orace, twins, and Emma A. Mr. Coffin has lived on the present home place in Bement Townshi p for about fourteen years. He went to the late war, was wounded twice, and lost the sight o f one of his eyes. His health was also injured by exposure in the army.
William D. COFFIN died at his home in Bement last Thursday morning, Jan 20th following a shor t illness with pneumonia. Several days prior to this attack he was bitten on the arm by a ho rse and this wound gave him considerable trouble before pneumonia set in. Mr Coffin was bor n in Vermillion county, Indiana, January 22, 1842, and came with his parents to Piatt count y in 1858. At the age of 20 he enlisted at Bement on August 7, 1862, as a private in Compan y D, Severnty-third Illinois Volunteer Infantry. This was known as the Preacher's Regiment, " and was the first regiment to be called fromthe state of Illinois in 1862. He remained i n the servicefor three years and was mustered out at Nashville, Tennessee, on June 12, 1865 , at the close of the war. He was in a number of important battles and received several seve re wounds, one of them causing the loss of an eye. At the close of the war he retunred to Ve rmillion county, Indiana, and was married September 13, 1866 to Miss Mary Holtz. The follow ing year they came to this county, where they have since made their home. Of eight childre n born to them, the following with his wife survive: Mrs. Austin Ward and Harry M. Coffin o f Bement and Fred Coffin of Ohio. Durring his long activelife, Mr. Coffin acquired considera ble of the worlds goods and was the owner of nearly five hudnred acres of land near Bement . He retired from active farming in 1895 and since that time had lived in Bement and engage d in the real estate business to a great extent. Mr. Coffin was a staunch Rebublican and too k an active interest in its affairs. He served as Supervisor of Bement Township for severa l terms and was a man of high character and appreciated by all who knew himfor his sterling w orth as a good citizen. Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon, January 22nd, at th e home conducted by Rev. Wilbert Dawson of Springfield, Illinois assisted by Rev. W. E. Olms ted. The internment was in the Bement cemetery.

BIOGRAPHY: CLARK H. CRECILIUS was born October 7, 1847, in Crawford county, Ind., and is a so n of Philip and Drucilla (Enlow) Crecilius, natives of Tennessee, but who came to this Stat e among the pioneers. His grandfather came from Germany in an early day. His parents died wh en he was but four years of age, and his early life was marked by toil and poverty. For a fe w years after the death of his parents he found a home with John Glosson, and was then boun d to Thomas leghhill, of Harrison county, with whom he remained eight years, when his maste r died. He then lived with James Highhill until 1862, when he came to Leavenworth, and was g iven employment by J. H. Lyon, a merchant of that place. Up to this time he had had few advan tages for receiving an education, but while with Mr. Lyon he studied at odd times and clerke d at $10 per month with "board and washing" included. In June, 1863, he enlisted in Co. C, S eventy-forth Indiana volunteer Infantry, and served until the close of the war. On his discha rge from the Army, he returned to the employment of Mr. Lyon, remaining one year. Afterwar d he attended Hartsville University for six months. He then entered the employment of John S . Whitten, remaining with him until 1870, when he was elected Recorder of the county, and in 1874 was re-elected. At the expiration of his second term, he was elec ted County Treasurer, and re-elected in 1882. In 1885 he was elected joint-representative fro m the counties of Crawford and Orange, and served in the Fifty-fourth General Assembly. He n ext engaged in mercantile business at Marengo, which he followed about two and a half years , acting postmaster the while, and then located at Leavenworth. In 1889 he was appointed cle rk to the Ways and Means Committee of the National House of Representatives.spouse: Wilbur, Katie (~1852 - )In 1869, Mr. Crecilius was married to Miss Katie Wilbur, a daughter of Joseph Wilbur, whose f ather, William Wilbur, was the second settler of the town. The latter was from New York, an d was a soldier in the war of 1812, serving through the struggle as drum-major. The Wilbur s removed from New York to Pennsylvania, and to Indiana about the year 1824, settling in Craw ford county, near Leavenworth. Joseph Wilbur, the father of Mrs. Crecilius, was born in Ne w York in 1814, and was married at the age of twenty years to Sarah Patrick, a daughter of B rice Patrick, Esq., an early settler of the county. Mr. and Mrs. Crecilius have had six chil dren, viz: Hallie, Frank, Clyde, Sadie, Florence and Gracie. Hallie is married to Sherman W . Stewart, and lives at Marengo. The other children are at home.

CRUM, Christian 11 May 1803 - 30 Dec 1881 Aged 78 Yr 8 Mo 19 Da (Christian Crum was born in Kentucky and left there on account of the outrages of the Indian s, and went to Indiana, but in 1831 came to Morgan County, Ill. He was there married to Mar y Robertson, who was a native of Indiana. After marriage they settled a few miles distant fr om Virginia, Ill., it being Mr. Crum's intention to engage in chopping wood in the timber, bu t his plans were frustrated as that was the winter made notable by the "big snow", so much sn ow falling that the people could do little but remain at home. On the original homestead Chr istian Crum and his wife passed the rest of their lives and reared a family of eight children .)
CRUM, Mary 17 May 1813 - 9 Mar 1882 Aged 68 Yr 9 Mo 22 Da Wife of Christian Crum (The following news itemwas taken from the Jacksonville Daily Journal of Thursday, March 11 , 1882: DEATH OF MRS. CHRISTIAN CRUM. Mrs. Christian Crum died at the home of her son, Mr . David M. Crum, near Arcadia Thursday, with typhoid pneumonia, after an illness of seven day s. She was in the 69th year of her age, and had been a church member for nearly 50 years. S he was born in Clark county, Indiana, in the year 1813, and was married to Christian Crum Jul y 5th, 1831, by Dr. W.F. Short, of this city. She united with the Methodist church that year . She was the mother of eleven children, of whom eight, six sons and two daughters are stil l living-- all married. The funeral will take place at 10 o'clock this morning at Union church, four mi les northwest of Arcadia. The services will be conducted by Dr. Short. He attended their 50 th anniversary wedding on July 5th, last, and also presided at the funeral of the husband on January 1st, 1882.)

The father of our subject was Ma tthias Crum, a native of Virginia, and was born July 10, 1774. He lived in the old dominion S tate until mature in years, and then emigrated to Kentucky. While in this State, he taught sc hool, and there married Miss Margaret Spangler, a native of Louisville; born Nov. 18, 1779. H er father, Daniel, was an early comer to that portion of the State, and was killed by the Ind ians, while attending to stock on his farm. Matthias Crum came from Kentucky to Morgan County , in 1832, and brought with him his wife and family of six children. He located in Morgan Cou nty, and there resided until his death, March 8, 1841, being then sixty-seven years of age. H is wife survived him, and died April 24, 1852. His father also, Matthias Crum, was a native b orn German, a stone mason by trade. He crossed the ocean three times in his life; was a thoro ugh workman, as many of the old stone chimneys erected by him in the old Dominion State, fo r the F. F. V's, are still standing, as a monument to his skill. James Crum, our subject, an d his oldest brother, Christian, made their first visits to Cass County in the year 1830; ano ther brother, David, also came with them, but he pushed on to Missouri, and there died. Jame s and Christian located 320 acres of land in Section thirty-five, township seventeen, range e leven. This they owned and improved in common. Upon this tract they built a small log cabin , and occupied it until they were both married, and their interests became divided. James mar ried Jan. 31, 1833, to Miss Christiana Ream, daughter of John Ream, a native of Pennsylvania , and came to Ohio, thence to Illinois in 1830. He lived with his brother until he had comple ted his first log cabin in 1834, which he first occupied the winter of 1834-35. Mr. Crum wa s born Sept. 22, 1806. He commenced farming in an humble way on eighty acres of land. To thi s he steadily added, until he had at one time several hundred acres. Of this he has sold bu t little, but has settled it upon his sons and daughters, and now owns about 800 acres, whic h comprises the homestead. Mrs. Crum died May 1, 1878. Their children, born in the followin g order, are: David M. (deceased), T. Jefferson, James F., Sarah M., now Mrs. John F. Wilson , of Menard County, Mary E., or Mrs. Williaim H. Thompson, of Jacksonville, Amanda C., now Mr s. W. H. Thompson, of Arenzville Precinct, John M., Marcellus, George W., Marcus L., Charle s P., and Oscar (deceased). Mr. Crum cast his first vote for General Jackson, at Charlestown , Ind. He has always evinced a lively interest in the cause of education, and is awake to th e public interests of his county and State.
Christina Died 1 May 1878 Age 64 Yr 16 Da Wife of James Crum (Her name is sometimes found as Christian and Christiana. She was a daughter of John Ream . She married James Crum on Jan. 31, 1833. Her husband re-married after Christina's death . Christina and her husband donated the land for Greenwood Cemetery. Her obituary appeare d as follows in the Jacksonville Daily Journal: MUNICIPAL BITES. Mrs. James Crum Sr., residi ng in Arcadia neighborhood, died of lung disease on Wednesday last. The funeral takes plac e today from the family residence and will doubtless be largely attended the deceased havin g resided in that locality for many years.
CRUM, James 1806 - 1899 (James Crum was born in Clark County, Ind. on Sept. 22, 1806, a son of Matthias and Margare t Spangler Crum. James was a brother of Christian Crum. James and Christian came to Cass Co unty, Ill. in 1830. James took up 160 acres of government land and made it his home until h e died. He married Christina Ream and they became parents of 12 children.)
