A Pretty Dual Celebration: Smith County Journal, 22 Oct 1914 reads: Forty years ago last Saturday Mrs. Elsa RICE and five sons landed in Cedar township, thi s county, from their home in Illinois. They were determined to take their full share of th e responsibilities that went with making a permanent home of the wild and untried west. The y came to stay and they did stay. From Oct 15, 1874, to the summer of 1890 the mother had he r part in framing the destinies of the members of the family. Then she passed to her reward . Last Sunday all the living members of the family and a few of the neighbors met at the ol d homestead now owned by one of the sons, T. M. RICE, and surrounded by the extensive land ho ldings of the other four brothers, to celebrate the event of the arrival of the family in thi s county and also to celebrate with the youngest brother, E. S. RICE, upon his recent weddin g and the addition of another member to the happy and contented family now numbering but litt le less than 100 persons. An invitation to take a meal with any one of the RICE families ha s a meaning entirely understood only by those who have been so fortunate, and on the occasio n of last Sunday it was a culmination of the skill of the combination of the families. The t ables were arranged to accommodate 36 persons and three rounds of tables were filled; and whe n these had all eaten capacity quantity there was enough left for fully as many more. Afte r the invocation of Divine blessing by Rev. D.F. McDonald of the Christian church, Kensington , the participants were served with turkey, chicken and meats, with vegetables and accessorie s galore, nine distinct kinds of cake, several kinds of pie and half a dozen kinds of sauce b eing offered along the line of dessert. The beautiful day was a factor in the pleasure of th e occasion and during the afternoon the porch was used as a rostrum and the beautiful lawn fo r an auditorium where an interesting program was given including a short talk by Rev. McDONAL D, a response by the guest of honor, E. S. RICE, reading and recitations by Miss LAHMAN and l ater a group photograph of the entire party superintended by Photographer PRATT and wife of K instington. Visiting, joking and a social good time was the later part of the program till t he time for departure for home came when the benediction was pronounced. BIOGRAPHY: From Dixon Evening Telegraph, Dixon, Ill., Tuesday, Apr 19, 1910 p4 c2 Golden Wedding: The following article from the Moline Daily Dispatch of April 16 will be o much interes t to Dixon people. Mrs. Richards being a sister of the late Sherwood Dixon. Mr. and Mrs. Ri chards were married 50 years ago at the Dixon home acress the street from the Christian churc h. Mr. and Mrs. W.H. Richards, long time residents of Moline, gave their friends a most hap py day yesterday in giving them the opportunity to see their happiness and congratulate the m on the attainment of their golden wedding anniversary. Fifty years ago in Dixon, Ill., occ urred the marriage of these children of Dixon's most prominent citizens, people who were amon g the founders of Dixon. Yesterday some of the people attended the nuptials, where the brid e and groom, straight and stufdy and as full of life as the youngest of other guests, receive d about 100 friends between the hours of 3 and 7. Relatives had come from out of the city fo r the celebration and a family dinner was enjoyed a noon. rev. Thomas Dones and his wife bei ng the only other guests, for a weddin party without a clergyman would be incomplete indeed . There were covers for 20 at the dinner and these guests assisted during the receiving hour s. The home was a vertible golden garden, with yellow tulips, daffodils, roses, etc. sent b y hundreds of friends with loving wishes and congratulations. Every available place through the house was a bloom with these beauties whil door and wind ow openings were draped with asparagus fern and flowers. No debutante ever had lovelier flor al offerings, all in glowing gold. Cofee and cake were served during the afternoon in the di ning room, where the table held large central basked of crystal filled with daffodils, fou r smaller ones filled with the same bplssoms being placed at intervals on the round table. T here was a guestbook especially for the occasion and in this the guests placed their names. Upstairs, as in usual weddings, a room had been hastily prepared for the wedding gifts w hich came as a surprise to the happy couple and here again golde metal, as well as golden lov e, was in evidence. There were golden spoons, golden plates, rings, pins, and other things ; pictures amount them one of the home in which the wedding occurred 50 years aog, with an ex planatory letter which made it doubly valuable, cut glass, bric-a-brack and other things suit abl for brides, and a paper, whose age had given it the proper tinge of gold, in which was pr inted the notice of the wedding. Among the gifts there was also a much appreciated one fro m Honolulu, a box of splendid pinapple sent by Misses Margaret Medill and Florence Parrett, w ho are etaching there. The box was accompanied by a rhymed message to Mr. and Mrs. Richard s written in gold on white leckle-edge paper, the leaves tied together with heavy cord. Assisting Mr. and Mrs. Richard were their daughters, Mrs. Simmon and Miss Mary Richards , their granddaughters, Misses Annie May and Gertrude Siomon and their son-in-law, P.C. Simmo n. Also the following relatives, who were house guests, Mr. and Mrs. W. W. Wingert of Dixon , the latter a niece of Mrs. Richards; Miss Sarah Richards of Dixon, Mr. Richard's only siste r; Miss Elizabeth Barge of Dixon and Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Boardman of Helena, Montana, th ladie s nieces of Mrs. Richards; John H. Dixon of Chicago and Mr. and Mrs. Georg Goodwin of Sioux C ity, IA, brother and sister of Mrs. Richards. Miss Barge, Mr and Mrs. Boardman, Mrs. goodwi n will remain for a few days' further visit. The other guests return to their homes tomorrow . Mrs. Boardman, who made a previou visit a couple of months ago, will with her husband tak e a trip to New York before returning to Montana, where Mr. Boardman is largely interested i n stock raising, having a large ranch near Helena. There were guests from Moline and n happi er occasion has been seen here. Among the honored guests were Mr. and Mrs John Beatty, who c elebrated their 55th wedding anniversary yesterday, the Beaty and Richards having celebrate d together for many anniversaries.
