Cass County JOHN KNIGHT, banker, Beardstown; is a native of Cornwall, England; born Feb. 5, 1838. His fa ther, Thomas Knight, also a native of Cornwall, England, was a cooper, and followed his trad e in the town of Cumbron, England, before coming to America. He married Elizabeth Burlase, o f Cornwall, England, who bore him three sons and three daughters, John being the youngest son, and fourth child. The children are as follows: Mary , Mrs. D. Bottrell, of Christian Co., Ill.; William J., of Beardstown; Thomas, John (subject); Elizabeth J., Mrs. Ch auncey Rice; and Emily, who died at New Orleans, after the voyage from England. Subject's fa ther died in this county, about the year 1867; aged sixty-seven years. His mother, who was born Nov. 25, 1798, died Aug. 21, 187 9. Mr. Knight came to the United States in 1846, with his parents, who settled in Beardstow n Precinct, and farmed for several years in the Sangamon Bottoms; then bought a farm of 264 a cres of land of Abner Foster. He received a good common school education, and became owner o f the homestead farm during the late war. He engaged in farming there till l1871, when he re nted his lands, and moved to Beardstown. He has been Director of the Cass County Bank four y ears, and Vice President during the same period. In 1876, he married Augusta, daughter of He nry Theibagt, of this county. Beardstown; is a native of England, born in Cornwall, Aug. 14, 1 836; son of Thomas K. and Elizabeth (Bellace) Knight, who were the parents of seven children . His father was also a native of Cornwall, England, and followed the cooper's trade there t ill he came to the United States, where he engaged in farming; he died in 1866. Thomas attend ed school in England, and afterward in the schools here for some time, and began life as farm er here, on the Sangamon Bottom, and has since followed farming. He was married in Beardstow n Precinct, this county, Oct. 27, 1859, to Emeline D. Haywood; born in Cornwall, England, Oct . 27, 1838; daughter of Peter and Mary Haywood; and by this union nine children have been bor n: May(deceased), Robert, Minnie, Myrtle, Albert J., Harry (deceased), Lloyd, Edwin, and an i nfant, deceased (unnamed). Baskin + Co. Hi storical Publishers, Chicago, 1882. Cass County GEORGE KUHL, retired, Beardstown; was born Sept. 17, 1807, in Hesse-Darmstadt, Germany; son o f Christian and Elizabeth (Ganz) Kuhl. Our subject learned the trade of baker, and worked a t that for a number of years. In 1833 he came to America, and worked in Richmond, Va., a cou ple of years, and in 1836 came to Beardstown with his parents. In 1837 he started in the bak ery business, which he continued till 1848. He then erected larger warerooms, and bought gra in and sacked provisions for many years. In 1861 he built another business room on Main stre et, and opened a dry goods store, continuing the grocery business in another room. In 1876 M r. Kuhl retired from business, leaving it in the hands of his sons, George and Philip. In 18 38 he married Miss Christiana Becker, who died in 1848, and three sons are living by that mar riage. KUHL, of Kuhl Bros., dealers in dry goods, groceries and notions, Beardstown; i s a native of Beardstown, born Aug. 28, 1841, where he received his primary education, finish ing at Quincy College. He began clerking in a grocery store when young, and remained at that occupation till 1861, when he en listed in Co. K, 33d Ill. Vol. Infantry, and served in Missouri two years, under Generals Steele and McClernand . In the spring of 1862, he was detached from the ranks, and served as a clerk in the muster ing office for nearly two years, and was discharged in 1864, having served three years. In 1 872, he and his two brothers, William P. and Philip, entered into partnership, and carried on business for five years, when William P. retired from the firm, a nd George S. and Philip have since carried on the dry goods and grocery business, employing three salesmen. In 1881 , the sales in the two departments amounted to $50,000. In 1868, Mr. Kuhl married Julia E., daughter of James Buck , of Beardstown. They have one son and one daughter. LEWIS KUHL, grocer, Beardstown; was born in Beardstown, July 16, 1850, and is half brothe r of the Kuhl brothers; his father having married at the death of his first wife, Mrs. Heming house, who bore him four children: J. Lewis, Mary, Henry, and Lydia. Our subject, after a co mmon school education, took a course at the Central Wesleyan College, Warrenton, Mo., als o a partial course at the Illinois Wesleyan University, and a commercial course at the Gem Ci ty Business College, graduating from that institution in 1872; after which he clerked for som e years for Kuhl Bros. and at Pekin. In 1881, he embarked in the grocery business, on the co rner of Sixth and Monroe streets, where he has a fine trade in groceries and queensware. Jan . 23, 1879, he married Miss Emma J.
