CRUM, Christian 11 May 1803 - 30 Dec 1881 Aged 78 Yr 8 Mo 19 Da (Christian Crum was born in Kentucky and left there on account of the outrages of the Indian s, and went to Indiana, but in 1831 came to Morgan County, Ill. He was there married to Mar y Robertson, who was a native of Indiana. After marriage they settled a few miles distant fr om Virginia, Ill., it being Mr. Crum's intention to engage in chopping wood in the timber, bu t his plans were frustrated as that was the winter made notable by the "big snow", so much sn ow falling that the people could do little but remain at home. On the original homestead Chr istian Crum and his wife passed the rest of their lives and reared a family of eight children .)
CRUM, Mary 17 May 1813 - 9 Mar 1882 Aged 68 Yr 9 Mo 22 Da Wife of Christian Crum (The following news itemwas taken from the Jacksonville Daily Journal of Thursday, March 11 , 1882: DEATH OF MRS. CHRISTIAN CRUM. Mrs. Christian Crum died at the home of her son, Mr . David M. Crum, near Arcadia Thursday, with typhoid pneumonia, after an illness of seven day s. She was in the 69th year of her age, and had been a church member for nearly 50 years. S he was born in Clark county, Indiana, in the year 1813, and was married to Christian Crum Jul y 5th, 1831, by Dr. W.F. Short, of this city. She united with the Methodist church that year . She was the mother of eleven children, of whom eight, six sons and two daughters are stil l living-- all married. The funeral will take place at 10 o'clock this morning at Union church, four mi les northwest of Arcadia. The services will be conducted by Dr. Short. He attended their 50 th anniversary wedding on July 5th, last, and also presided at the funeral of the husband on January 1st, 1882.)

Virginia; was born in Arenzville Precinct, Dec. 25, 1853, and i s a son of Christian Crum. He received a good education, having attended the Wesleyan Univer sity, at Bloomington, Ills., for some time, and engaged in farming, which occupation he stil l pursues. In Virginia, this county, Nov. 24, 1875, he married Henrietta B. Payne, a nativ e of Missouri, born Sept. 21, 1856, daughter of W. B. and Elizabeth Payne of Virginia, this c ounty; by this union they have been blessed with three children: Bessie L., Vida V., and Mab el A. Mr. Crum is a member of the M. E. GEORGE A. CRUM, farmer; P.O., Arenzville; is a native of Arenzville Precinct, this county; bo rn Oct. 29, 1855; son of Christian and Mary (Robertson) Crum, natives of Clarke County, Ind . Christian Crum, our subject's father, was a farmer by occupation; was born May 11, 1803, an d died Dec. 30, 1881; his wife, born May 17, 1813, died March 9, 1882; they were parents of e leven children, three deceased, our subject being the youngest child. Her early education wa s received in the Union School House, Arenzville; at seventeen years of age he went to the We sleyan College, Bloomington, Ill., where he studied for three years. He then devoted his atte ntion to farming, and also engaged in the livery business. He was married in Beardstown, thi s county, July 5, 1881, to Lucy G. Morris; born in this county, Jan. 12, 1862; daughter of Jo hn C. and Nancy Morris. Mr. Crum is a Democrat, and a member of the I.O.O.F.spouse: Morris, Lucy G. (1862 - )
Dr. George W. Crum, the seventh living child, was born on the homestead, Oct. 1, 1848. He att ended school at the State Normal University, two and a half years, at Bloomington, in 1868, 1 869 and a part of 1879 [sic?]. He then entered Adrian College, at Adrian, Mich., and in 187 2 received the degree of A. M. He then returned to the Wesleyan College, and graduated as a n A. B. In the meantime, he spent two years in the study of medicine, at the St. Louis Medica l College, and graduated in 1874, receiving his degree as M.D. The course of study he pursue d may seem rather irregular, but it was taken as his choice, to avoid the discipline under on e set of minds. Dr. Crum practiced medicine about four years, but is gradually abandoning pra ctice, and has embraced farming, on account of failing health. He entered farming in 1869, wh en he purchased one hundred and sixty acres of land adjoining the homestead. Aug. 21, 1878, h e married Mary E. Malone, daughter of David Malone, of Evansville, Ind. Mrs. Crum is a gradua te of Jacksonville Athµneaum, and was born April 10, 1856. They have two children: Cora A. an d Olga I.spouse: Malone, Mary E. (1856 - 1910)Mollie 1856 - 1910 Wife of George W. M.), marcellis, Chri stina A., George W.spouse: Ream, Christiana (1814 - 1878)THE CRUM FAMILY. -- James Crum, farmer, Arenzville Precinct. The father of our subject was Ma tthias Crum, a native of Virginia, and was born July 10, 1774. He lived in the old dominion S tate until mature in years, and then emigrated to Kentucky. While in this State, he taught sc hool, and there married Miss Margaret Spangler, a native of Louisville; born Nov. 18, 1779. H er father, Daniel, was an early comer to that portion of the State, and was killed by the Ind ians, while attending to stock on his farm. Matthias Crum came from Kentucky to Morgan County , in 1832, and brought with him his wife and family of six children. He located in Morgan Cou nty, and there resided until his death, March 8, 1841, being then sixty-seven years of age. H is wife survived him, and died April 24, 1852. His father also, Matthias Crum, was a native b orn German, a stone mason by trade. He crossed the ocean three times in his life; was a thoro ugh workman, as many of the old stone chimneys erected by him in the old Dominion State, fo r the F. F. V's, are still standing, as a monument to his skill. James Crum, our subject, an d his oldest brother, Christian, made their first visits to Cass County in the year 1830; ano ther brother, David, also came with them, but he pushed on to Missouri, and there died. Jame s and Christian located 320 acres of land in Section thirty-five, township seventeen, range e leven. This they owned and improved in common. Upon this tract they built a small log cabin , and occupied it until they were both married, and their interests became divided. James mar ried Jan. 31, 1833, to Miss Christiana Ream, daughter of John Ream, a native of Pennsylvania , and came to Ohio, thence to Illinois in 1830. He lived with his brother until he had comple ted his first log cabin in 1834, which he first occupied the winter of 1834-35. Mr. Crum wa s born Sept. 22, 1806. He commenced farming in an humble way on eighty acres of land. To thi s he steadily added, until he had at one time several hundred acres. Of this he has sold bu t little, but has settled it upon his sons and daughters, and now owns about 800 acres, whic h comprises the homestead. Mrs. Crum died May 1, 1878. Their children, born in the followin g order, are: David M. (deceased), T. Jefferson, James F., Sarah M., now Mrs. John F. Wilson , of Menard County, Mary E., or Mrs. Williaim H. Thompson, of Jacksonville, Amanda C., now Mr s. W. H. Thompson, of Arenzville Precinct, John M., Marcellus, George W., Marcus L., Charle s P., and Oscar (deceased). Mr. Crum cast his first vote for General Jackson, at Charlestown , Ind. He has always evinced a lively interest in the cause of education, and is awake to th e public interests of his county and State.
Christina Died 1 May 1878 Age 64 Yr 16 Da Wife of James Crum (Her name is sometimes found as Christian and Christiana. She was a daughter of John Ream . She married James Crum on Jan. 31, 1833. Her husband re-married after Christina's death . Christina and her husband donated the land for Greenwood Cemetery. Her obituary appeare d as follows in the Jacksonville Daily Journal: MUNICIPAL BITES. Mrs. James Crum Sr., residi ng in Arcadia neighborhood, died of lung disease on Wednesday last. The funeral takes plac e today from the family residence and will doubtless be largely attended the deceased havin g resided in that locality for many years.
CRUM, James 1806 - 1899 (James Crum was born in Clark County, Ind. on Sept. 22, 1806, a son of Matthias and Margare t Spangler Crum. James was a brother of Christian Crum. James and Christian came to Cass Co unty, Ill. in 1830. James took up 160 acres of government land and made it his home until h e died. He married Christina Ream and they became parents of 12 children.)

Marcus L. Crum was born Jan 16, 1851, on the homestead. He received his education at the Stat e Normal University, at Normal, Ill., and at the Wesleyan University, Bloomington, where he g raduated in the class of 1874. He first took the degree of B. S., and since an honorary degre e of M.S. has been conferred upon him. He, with the others, received 250 acres from the homes tead property, as a present, and to that has been added, until he now owns about 560 acres, 1 60 acres having been presented to him by John Stubblefield, whose daughter, Miss Mary F., h e married March 30, 1875. Thomas Jefferson, his oldest living son, was born July 9, 1835. He received such schooling a s the early advantages of those times afforded, and grew up to assist his father at a most pr opitious time, when there was much to be done. He was reared to be a successful farmer. In 18 35 he started in life for himself, with a worthy gift from his father of 250 acres of Cass Co unty land. March 11, 1855, he married Miss Sarah A., daughter of William and Lucinda (Turner ) Henderson. Mr. Henderson is a native of Indiana, and Mrs. Henderson of Kentucky. They cam e to Morgan County in 1830. Mrs. Crum, born May 7, 1840, and she has eight children living a s follows: Charles E., Marah T., Marion O., Willey S., Ollie E., May L., Henry O., Eben R. Marcellus also received 250 acres from the old homestead, upon which he located. He was bor n Jan 9, 1844, and is the sixth living child of his father.
