1860 census of Mahaska, Iowaspouse: Horn, Fanny (1840 - )1869 the Coder families moved to Washington, Kansas.
1880 census of Washington, Washington, Kansas: Jacque CODE 44/PA/PA/PA Fanny wife/40/PA/PA/PA Jerry son/20/IA William son/18/IA A. W. son/14/IA (Elias Wampole) Frank son/12/IA Handy son/10/KS Charles son/8/KS Eddie son/4/KS George son/2/KS Shirley - slwmanks@ruraltel.net My great-grandmother was Fanny Horn who married Jacob F. Coder. Fanny was a sister of Lavin a A. Horn, children of Samuel W. + Susannah Smith Horn. The Coders and Horn's moved to Stephe nson, Illinois from Pennsylvania. Fanny was married in 1859 in Stephenson Co. Ill. In 1860, t he census showed them living in Mahaska Co. Iowa. Then in 1869, the Coder's (several familie s of them) moved to Washington County, Kansas. The Dametz's must have moved to Kansas a few y ears later. I was born on Charlie Dametz place in Washington County, KS. The house was still there unti l about 2 years ago when it burned. I have a photo of Charlie + Lizzie Dametz. My parents were good friends of them. (Also relatives (My dad's Grandmother was a sister of C harlie's Mother). There was also a brother, Peter, I believe, and I don't know if there wer e any more children in this family. I have that Lavina's mother, Susannah Smith is buried i n Iowa. I will do some checking in Washington County to see where Francis and Lavina Dametz a re buried. Fanny and Jacob Coder are buried in the Washington City Cemetery, Washington Count y, KS.
From: Shirley Wood <mailto:slwmanks@ruraltel.net> To: cherie@cedarcity.net <mailto:cherie@ced arcity.net> Sent: Tuesday, February 19, 2002 2:30 PM Subject: Horn Family
Cherie, I was happy to hear from you and Thank You for all the Horn Family info you sent me . I have some of it, but have really enjoyed picking up some new info.
The Agnes Miriam Coder you have being married to John W. Horn was my great-grandfather (Jaco b F. Coder)'s sister. My daughter and I went back to Pennsylvania, and found John W.'s graves ite, but did not find Agnes Miriam's. He was buried in a circle of Veterans in the DuBois Cit y Cemetery.
Also we went to the Luthersburg, PA cemetery and found Lavina and Fanny's grandparent Horn' s grave stones. David and Samuel were twin sons of John Horn. They married sisters, (David ma rried Mary Wampole and Samuel married Hannah Wampole). They were 73 years of age when they di ed, and died one day apart. They share the same tombstone. I have a couple of tombstones I wo uld scan for you if you would like them. One is their stone, and the other is Francis M. + La vina Dametz's stone located in the Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Washington County, Kansas. I al so have Francis M's obituary and a pencil drawing of their first place in Washington Co.
Where do you live? Maybe you've already been to these places. And through which of Samuel an d Lavina's children did you descend from? I have been in touch with a Nikki Newman whose gran dmother, Alice, was Charlie's daughter.
I was born on the Dametz place in Washington County, Kansas. It was not the first one Samue l acquired, but probably the second. Jacob F. Coder's brother, John Coder, was injured in th e Civil War, and died when he was about 27 years old leaving a wife and 3 little boys. She we nt back to Iowa where her people were, so Samuel evidently bought the 1/4 section of land o f John's. He added improvements and planted many trees. He did the same on the place wher e I was born. (The house was still standing there until about 2 years ago when it burned down . ) I have a good photo of Charlie and Lizzie Dametz.
I did not know Samuel W. Horn had died after their 3 children (Lavina, Peter and Fanny), the n she remarried to Andrew Ayers until I went to Marion County, Iowa, and done some research . I found where they had Adaline, Elmire and Sarah, but didn't know about John and Mary. ALS O THIS WAS VERY INTERESTING TO ME....... about the granddaughter Irena. No, Fanny didn't di e young. She married my great-grandfather, Jacob F. Coder, and they had 10 sons---at leas t I THINK 10, I'm now beginning to wonder!
Here is what is strange. Jacob and Fanny had a son who was born 1 year (1858) before they wer e married in 1859. I am wondering if she had another child out of wedlock 1 year before tha t (1857), Irena????? (Irena got left with the grandparents to raise, and they took John Henry, the son.) You state d it listed her father as being born in NY, and mother in PA. If the girl was Fanny's, it pro bably had a different Father than Jacob, as he was born in PA.
My grandfather was the 4th son of Jacob and Fanny's. His name was Elias Wampole Coder (the Wa mpole being Fanny's father's mother's maiden name. Jacob and Fanny lost 3 little boys, ages 2 , 4, and 7 within a 9 day prior in 1880 with diphtheria. One son died at age 44, never marryi ng. My grandfather died when I was about 3 Ła so I don't remember much about him. My father pa ssed away in 1988 at the age of 92Ła. He was the only son of Elias Wampole. He had 3 sisters a nd they are all deceased.
A tornado went through the graveyard where Frances and Lavina are buried several years ago. I t used to have cedar trees around it, and now it is to bare. Some of the stones are not stand ing straight, but theirs is one of the nicer ones in the cemetery and is still standing ver y well.
There are more twists in this family as far as the Horns and Coders are concerned, but it i s so complicated, I get lost in it. Suzanna Smith (Lavina + Fannie's Mother) had a sister, Na ncy who married Elias Horn, and had several children, including one set of twins that they na med after each of their mothers (Hannah and Suzanna). Nancy died, then Elias married Jacob Co der's sister, Margaret Coder. They moved to Illinois, Iowa, and Kansas with all the rest, bu t then later, moved back to Iowa. After he died, she went to Bedford, Oregon and was living w ith one of her daughters. Agnes Miriam and John W. Horn never did move to Kansas, they went b ack to PA to live.
Thanks again for the info, and if I can help you, please let me know. I just wish my Dad wer e here to answer a few of my questions!! Shirley slwmanks@ruraltel.net <mailto:slwmanks@rural tel.net>

He came to Illinois wit h his parents in 1849 and in 1862 he enlisted in Company C. 167th Illinois and was discharge d in 1865 at Chester, Pa. In November 1872 he was united in marriage with Nancy Argo, who pr eceded himto the other world July 12, 1875. To them were born five children, three of whom s urvive, William of Spokane, Washington, John of Butterfield, Minn., and Solomon of Mahomet, I ll. In June 1880 he was again united in holy wedlock with Isalina Bennett, to howm were bor n eight children, all of whom survive. Besides his family he leaves a brother F. M. Coffin o f Cisco and a sister, Mrs. Geo. Valentine of Monticello, also a host of relatives and friend s to mourn his departure. While he suffered great pain with pneumonia fever which was his fa tal disease, he was never heard to mourn or complain about anything.
Mackey Cemetery Records for the burials of these COFFINS: Christopher A. son of J. B. + N. S. 31 Aug 1874, 1y rm 19d James B. 1840-1912 Nancy S., wife of J. B. (stone broken) 12, 1875 33y 5m 8d Sarah A. dau of N. S. + J.B. 25 Oct 1870, 10y, 2m, 12d (wrong age difference, see note below ) Concerning Sarah's burial date: In the book Piatt County Illinois Marriage Records 1841 - 185 3 and Cemetery Records compiled by Fern J. Richart, it gives Sarah's age at death as 10y 2m 1 2d. and the date of death as Oct 25 1870. This calculates out to having her birth be befor e their marriage by several years. I found Sarah as a 1 yo in the 1870 census but not in th e 1880. Having her be alive in the 1870 census without a second Sarah present at that time i ndicates that there was only one Sarah for this family and the book is in error for the age d ifference. It must be 1y instead of 10y.
