His will, dated May 19, 1729, and probated less than a month later (June 16, 1729) is recorded in York Country general records book No. 16, Part 2, Folio 605. ... the charts of H. N. Buck, 1965. "The Will of Joseph BUCK In the name of GOD, amen- I, Joseph Buck of Yorkhamton Parish in York County, being sick and weak of body but of perfect sense and memory, thanks to Almighty GOD, for the same, do hereby make this my last Will and Testament in manner and form as followeth-
My soul to the Almighty, that made it, hoping through the merrits of my blessed Saviour, Jesus Christ, to have a joyful resurection; my body to the earth with decent Christian burial, at the direction of my executor, hereafter named and as to what worldly goods, it hath pleased GOD to bestow on me, I dispose of as followeth -
Item - I give to my nephew, Joseph Buck, son of my brother, Matthew Buck, one negro girl named Sarah, one negro boy named Billy, one negro man named Valentine, one negro woman called Sue, and one negro boy called Orron, to him, the said Joseph Buck and his heirs, forever. But if it should please GOD that the said Joseph Buck should die under age and without issue, lawfully begotten, then I give the said negroes and their increase to be equally divided between my nephews, John and Charles Buck and their heirs, forever.
Item - I give to Martha Buck, daughter of my brother, Mathew Buck, one negro girl named Phyllis and her increase, to her and her heirs, forever.
Item - I give to my nephew, John Buck, one negro man called Will, that I purchased of John White and my bed and furniture.
Item - I give to my niece, Elizabeth Buck, daughter of my brother Benjamin Buck, one negro girl called Phoebe, which is at the quarters of Col. Thomas Jones in King William County, the said girl about two years old.
Item - I give to my friend, Francis Harmon of New Kent, two cows and my best suit of wareing cloaths.
Item - I give to my niece, Elizabeth Barham, one three year old heifer, one pewter dish and six pewter plates.
Item - My will and desire is that the remaining part of my cattle shall be sold to raise money towards paying my debts.
Item - I give to William Barber, Gen't, and to his wife, Anna Marie, each of them a guinea to buy them a ring to wear in memory of me.
Item - I give to my friend, Thomas Hanley, five pounds current money.
Item - I give to my brother, Nathaniel Buck, my horse and saddle and to prevent any disputes that may happen hereafter, about my negro man, Will, that was left to me by my father, I do hereby give all my right, title and interest that I have to the said Nathaniel Buck and his heirs.
Lastly, I desire that my negroes may be hired out by my executors, to raise money for the education of my kinsman, Joseph Buck and after my just debts and funeral expenses are satisfied, that the remaining part of my estate be sold for the ------------------my kinsman to learn to read, wright and cypher and I do hereby nominate, constitue and appoint my loving brother, Nathaniel Buck and my good friend, Robert Crawley of this county, to be executors of this, my last Will and Testament. In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 26th, December 1732.
