According to Gregory LAMB, author of Orkney Surnames, the first recorded reference to the PETRIE is of a Magnus PETRIE in 1601. LAMB says that this is almost certainly a native patronymic name meaning "little Peter". Peter was used as a surname in 17th century Deerness. While the surname is lightly scattered throughout Orkney, a third of the occurrences of the name are in Burray and South Ronaldsay.
