According to Gregory LAMB, author of Orkney Surnames, the first recorded reference to the MATCHES surname is of a James MATCHES of Strenness in 1576. LAMB says this is a patronymic surname, derived from the given name Matthew. Matches was frequently used as a given name in Orkney and Shetland during the 17th century. He explains that the appearance of the "c" in place of the second "t" is probably a result of dialect; where the word "tube" is pronounced"chube" . The surname is concentrated in the islands of Holm and Burray, but was traditionally associated with the parish of Firth.
