According to Gregory LAMB, author of Orkney Surnames,
the first recorded reference to the Orkney LEITH surname is of
a Thomas LEITH in 1391. He suggests the surname is probably from
the old Norse "leithr" meaning "loathed",
one of many contemptuous terms used by the Norse for the Celtic
peoples of Orkney. The surname is traditionally associated with
the island of Burray where the placename Leith is recorded.
