According to Gregory LAMB, author of Orkney Surnames, the first recorded reference to the ANNAL surname in South Ronaldsay is of a John ANNAL in 1715. The surname was recorded in Fife as early as 1550, though there is no known link between the occurance of the name in Fife and in South Ronaldsay. Lamb says that locally, the name is thought to be a corruption of Annand (Anynd), a surname which formerly existed in Orkney.
