John L. Cochran
John arrived at Zanesville, Muskingum County, Ohio, about 1806 .8,9 He boarded with Gen. Green in 1807 on Gen. Green's farm on the Marietta Road.9 He was a carpenter and "on wet days and of evenings he would make cigars."9 He was elected Zanesville's first marshall in 1814.10
John was Zanesville's first Market Master receiving $150 a year in 1814 at Zanesville, Muskingum County, Ohio.9
John and James Cochran were the builders of Zanesville's first market house in 1814. James was the main builder.
The First market house was a frame structure, thirty-five feet on Market street, and running back forty-three feet. It was built on squares post with the upper part weather-boarded. The building alone, without hooks or benches, cost the handsome sum of $150. It was built by James Cochran, a brother of John Cochran, divided into six stalls, three on each side.9,11
By 1817 John was in the tobacco business in Mud Hollow on Main Street between Sixth Street and Sewer Alley in Zanesville.9
John was head of household on the 1820 US Census at Zanesville, Muskingum County, Ohio. The household consisted of 4 males under 10, 1 male 10-16, 1 male 45 & up, and 1 female 45 and up. One person was engaged in manufacture.12 He was deeded McConnelsville Lot number thirty-four by Robert McConnel in a deed signed on 2 May 1820 at Morgan County, Ohio. .13 He and Mary Catherine Bricker deeded McConnelsville Lot thirty-four to Luther Barker in a deed signed on 19 June 1827 at Morgan County, Ohio. .14 He was head of household on the 1830 US Census at Zanesville, Muskingum County, Ohio. The household consisted of 1 male under 5, 2 males 5-10, 1 male 10-15, 1 male 15-20, 1 male 50-60, 1 female under 5, 1 female 20-30, and 1 female 30-40.15 He deeded property to Warren Timberlake in a deed signed on 26 January 1834 at Morgan County, Ohio. .16,17 He appeared on the 1840 US Census at Zanesville, Muskingum County, Ohio. The household consisted of 2 males 5-10, 2 males 15-20, 1 male 50-60, 1 female 10-15, 1 female 15-20, and 1 female 40-50.18
John and Mary Catherine appeared on the US Census taken 1850 at Zanesville, Muskingum County, Ohio, with Hugh Macauley Cochran, Caroline Amanda Cochran, Milton Adair Cochran and Susanna Elisabetha Straw. Susanna was listed as Susanna Stinson.19 He was a tobacconist.19 The family lived on 5th between river and south in 1850.20
John lived in 1860 at 117 S. 5th, Zanesville, Muskingum County, Ohio. Robert Cochran resided at the same address.21 He and Mary appeared on the 1860 US Census taken 1860 at Zanesville, Muskingum County, Ohio, with Caroline Amanda Cochran, Milton Adair Monroe, S Monroe and Robert S. Cochran. Caroline is enumerated as Caroline Monroe.22
