John Hughes1

M, b. 1773, d. 1838
     John Hughes was born in 1773.2,3 He and Esther (?) were married.1 He died in 1838 at Morgan County, Ohio, based on the dates his will was written and was admitted to probate.1,4 There is a tombstone for John and Hester Hughes in the McConnelsville Cemetery, McConnelsville, Ohio. The stone appears to have been made in the twentieth century. John's dates on the stone are 1773 to 1840, but that would put his death after his will was probated!5 His estate was probated on 26 June 1838 at McConnelsville, Morgan County.6
     John Hughes was probably enumerated as head of household on the 1810 US Census at Brooke County, Virginia. The household consisted of one male under ten, one male 16 to 25, one male 25 to 44, two females under ten, two females 10 to 15, and one female 26 to 44.7 He was probably enumerated as head of household on the 1820 US Census at Wellsburg, Brooke County, Virginia. The household consisted of one male under 10, one male 26 to 44, three females under 10, two females 10 to 16, one female 16 to 26, and one female 26 to 45. One person was engaged in agriculture.8 He and Esther (?) were Methodist. They were original members of McKendrie Methodist Church.9
     John bought 84. 66 acres (W 1/2 NW section 7 township 10N range 11W) in Morgan County, Ohio, by a cash entry land patent on 1 April 1826.10 John was on the Morgan County Meigsville Township tax lists for the years 1829 to 1837.11,12,13 He and Esther (?) lived in Meigsville Township, Morgan County, Ohio, from the 1820s until their deaths.14,15,16,17
     John was head of household on the 1830 US Census at Meigsville Township, Morgan County, Ohio. The household consisted of 1 male 20 to 30, 1 male 50 to 60, 1 female 10 to 15, 1 female 15 to 20, and 1 female 60 to 70.18
     John and Esther deeded property one acre for one dollar to Newton M. Brent in a deed signed on 22 March 1838 at Morgan County, Ohio. .19
     John made a will on 27 May 1838.6 His residence on the will was at Meigsville, Morgan County, Ohio.4
