     Hugh Macauley Cochran was born on 9 December 1825 at Zanesville, Muskingum County, Ohio.2 He was the son of John Lowrey Cochran and Mary Catherine Bricker.1 He and Mary Royston Bozman, daughter of John Royston Bozman and Eliza Brady, were married on 16 February 1853 at Morgan County, Ohio.2,3 He died on 16 September 1922 at McConnelsville, Morgan County, Ohio, of abdominal dropsy at age 96.4,5 He was buried on 19 September 1922 in McConnelsville Cemetery (McConnelsville), Morgan County, Ohio.6,5
     Hugh Macauley Cochran appeared on the census of 1850 in the household of John Lowrey Cochran and Mary Catherine Bricker at Zanesville, Muskingum County, Ohio. .7 He was a tobacconist in 1850.7
     After the death of his brother John in 1850, he continued his brother's cigar manufacturing business in at McConnelsville, Morgan County, Ohio.8
     In 1854 he moved his tobacco business to larger quarters at the corner of Center and Vine Street.8 He was town trustee in 1857 at McConnelsville.9
     Hugh and Mary appeared on the 1860 US Census taken 11 June 1860 at McConnelsville with Anna Caroline Cochran, Mary Liza Cochran, Ella Cochran, Frances B. Cochran, John Lowrey Cochran and Charles Edwin Cochran. .10
     His cigar company was producing 500,000 pounds of product per year by 1862.8
     Hugh Macauley Cochran was treasurer of the Morgan County Bridge Company in 1866 at Morgan County, Ohio.11
     Around 1868 he sold an interest in the cigar company which then became the Cochran Tobacco Company.8 He was deeded property by Samuel Thompson in a deed signed on 3 May 1869. .12
     Hugh and Mary appeared on the 1870 US Census taken 18 August 1870 at McConnelsville, Morgan County, Ohio, with Mary Liza Cochran, Anna Caroline Cochran, Ella Cochran, Frances B. Cochran, John Bozman Cochran, Milton Adair Cochran, Hugh Macauley Cochran and William Edward Cochran. .13 He was a hardware merchant.13
     In 1878 he again was sole owner of the cigar company which over the next few years averaged 600,000 pounds of plug per year.8
     Hugh and his wife Mary appeared on the US Census taken 16 June 1880 at McConnelsville. The household included his children Francis Wayland Cochran, Anna Caroline Cochran, Mary Liza Cochran, John Bozman Cochran, Milton Adair Cochran, Hugh Macauley Cochran, William Edward Cochran and Frances B. Cochran.14
     Hugh was employed by a tobacco manufactuer in 1888 at Rochester, Monroe County, New York.15
     In 1892 Hugh resumed the manufacture of cigars at the corner of Center and Vine in McConnelsville under the original name of Cochran Bros..8
     Hugh and his wife Mary appeared on the US Census taken 1 June 1900 at McConnelsville, Morgan County, Ohio. The household included his son Francis Wayland Cochran.16 He was a manufactuer of plug tobacco in 1900 at McConnelsville.16 He witnessed the will of his wife Mary Royston Bozman on 27 June 1903 at Morgan County, Ohio.17
     Mary and Hugh deeded property, part of outlot one second addition, where the grantors "now reside", to Francis Wayland Cochran in a deed signed on 5 December 1904 at McConnelsville. .18
     In 1908 Cochran Brothers produced 3,095,000 cigars and payed about $10,000 in tax.8
     Hugh appeared on the US Census taken 19 April 1910 at McConnelsville, Ohio. The household included his son Francis Wayland Cochran.19 He was the proprietor of a cigar factory.19
     Hugh appeared as father in the household of Francis Wayland Cochran and Maude C. Brent on the US Census taken 8 January 1920 at McConnelsville, Morgan County, Ohio. .20 He was a manufacturer of cigars in 1920 at Mcconnelsville.20
