Newton Brent
          Newton M. Brent was born circa 23 September 1812 probably at Spotsylvania County, Virginia.2,3,4 He was the son of Martin Brent and Ann Chilton. He and Hester Ann R. Hughes, daughter of John Hughes and Esther (?), were married on 15 November 1834 at Morgan County, Ohio.5 He died on 9 July 1900 at Seattle, King County, Washington.6
     Newton's father died about 1815 and his mother died about 1818.7,8 He became a ward of Thomas Proctor on 7 September 1818 at Spotsylvania County, Virginia.9
     Newton was deeded property one acre for one dollar by John Hughes and Esther (?) in a deed signed on 22 March 1838 at Morgan County, Ohio. .10
     Newton M. Brent appeared on the 1840 US Census at Meigsville Township, Morgan County, Ohio. The household consisted of 2 males under 5, 1 male 20-30, 1 female 5-10, and 1 female 20-30.11
     Newton served as a surty in the administration of the estate of his mother-in-law Esther (?).12
     Newton and Hester appeared on the US Census taken 26 July 1850 at Morgan Township, Morgan County, Ohio, with Robert H. Brent, Lewis H. Brent, Florinda B. Brent, Charles Robertson Brent, Lamston H. Brent and Catherine Ann Hughes. .13 Newton and Hester appeared on the 1860 US Census taken 4 June 1860 at McConnelsville, Morgan County, Ohio, with Lewis H. Brent, Florinda B. Brent, Charles Robertson Brent, Lamston H. Brent, Everett Brent, Eva Brent and Anna C. Brent. .14 Newton and Hester appeared on the 1870 US Census taken 24 August 1870 at Morgan Township, Morgan County, Ohio, with Charles Robertson Brent, Everett Brent, Eva Brent, Anna C. Brent, Florinda B. Brent and Lamston H. Brent. .15 He was listed as a shoemaker on the 1850 through 1900 censuses.13,14,15,16,17,18
     Newton was sheriff between 1849 and 1851 at Morgan County, Ohio.19 Newton was elected to the Ohio House of Representatives, Columbus, Ohio, in 1856. He was selected as sargent at arms of the Ohio House.20,21,22 He again served as sheriff between 1862 and 1866 at Morgan County, Ohio.19
     Newton was ill with typhoid in September 1873.23 He was reported to be recovered in November 1873.24
     In the 1870s Newton and Hester moved to Mills County, Iowa. All their children except Charles also moved to Iowa in the 1870s. Newton, head of household, and his wife Hester appeared on the US Census taken 26 June 1880 at Center Township, Mills County, Iowa. The household included his daughter Florinda. They were listed as N. M. Brent 67, H. A. R. Brent wife 66.16 He lived at Hillsdale in 1884. He was a justice and shoemaker there.25 Newton and Hester appeared on the state census of 1885 at Hillsdale, Mills County, Iowa, with Florinda B. Brent. Newton's age was given as 72 and Hester's as 70.26
     Newton M. Brent appeared on the Minnesota state census of 6 May 1885 in the household of Everett Brent and Carrie E. Fogg at St. Paul. .27 He lived at 2532 Fort Avenue East in Minneapolis, Minnesota, in 1886 .28 Newton M. Brent and his son Everett Brent were in the real estate business in 1886 at Minneapolis, Minnesota.28 He lived at 2513 East Lake in Minneapolis in 1888.29 He and his son, Everett Brent, had a shoemaking business at 2511 East Lake, Minneapolis, and a real estate and loan business at 2001 1/2 Cedar Avenue in 1888. Both busniesses were named N M Brent & Son.29 He was listed in the Minneapolis directory of 1890 at 2924 Twenty-seventh Avenue S., Minneapolis.30
     Newton appeared on the Washington state census of 1 April 1892 at Tacoma, Pierce County. .31 He lived at Tacoma circa 1895 with his daughter Anna and son-in-law Clarence Fogg.32 He lived at 3215 North 31st Street in Tacoma circa 1896.33
     Newton appeared as father-in-law in the household of Clarence Fogg and Anna C. Brent on the US Census taken 7 June 1900 at Seattle, King County, Washington. He was an 87 year old widower born September 1812 in East Virginia.17
