Notes for John Coleman, the Settler: John Coleman came to Greene County AL from North Carolina in 1817 with his faithful slave Trim,where he filed his claim on land to become known as Grassdale Plantation near Eutaw. He put in a corn crop, left Trim to tend the field and returned to NC to fetch his family. Two years later, in 1819, he again arrived to reclaim his settlement. Later Trim helped John Coleman build the first frame house in Greene County,a two story structure which elicited wonder throughout the area. The house had four chimneys, and even boasted a secret room where you could keep valuables or hide from the Indians. Coleman's land grant was signed by President James Monroe in 1824. John Coleman was a Baptist.
Per his will probated on 26 July 1852 in Greene County
