"Abstracts of Vital Records From Raleigh, North Carolina Newspapers 1799-1819" The Second Printing on Pg 99 it lists several records that explain this. Record 935: Died At Kinston, on Thursday last, JESSE COBB, Esq., an old and respectable inhabitant of Lenoir county. Mr. C. bore a distinguished part in the Revolutionary War, for many years served his country as a Legislator, and was a member of the Convention which formed the constitution of this State. RR Thurs 10 Sept 1807 3:5.
Jesse Cobb (1729-1807) and Elizabeth Heritage (1740-1820) He married her in 1771. They lived in Lenoir Co., NC. The book indicates there is some discussion about him actually being the son of Robert Cobb, but they feel strongly enough about it to list him as a descendent. "Jesse was a wealthy farmer, Revolutionary War Officer and politician from Lenoir County, MC. At the Battle of Alamance he served with Colonial forces loyal to the crown, as did other leading citizens of the State, but by the time of the engagement at Moore's Creek Bridge, he had joined the Patriot Army. He was appointed Captain, NC Militia 10/18/1775 and Commissary, First Battalion Volunteers 11/26/1775. In 1776 he saw action with the Continental Army in NJ and NY and endured the bitter winter at Valley Forge. He later served as a membe of the NC Assembly that drafted the State Constitution and the bill for erection of the State Capitol; Jesse died in Kinston, NC on 9/3/1807." REF: COBB CHRONICLES
Date: March 05, 2002 at 19:01:46: From the book "The Heritage of Wayne County": Record 418-A "JESSE COBB: The Cobb family of Wayne County traces its origins back to Jesse Cobb, who was born c. 1730 in Bertie County and who moved to New Bern prior to 1770 when Tryon's Palace was completed. In 1771 Jesse married Elizabeth Herritage, the 19 year old daughter of William Heritage . . . " and "An older sister of Elizabeth Heritage was Sarah, the second wife of Richard Caswell, revolutionary leader and the first elected Governor of North Carolina." It goe son to talk about the house that Elizabeth and Jesse had, "Harmony Hall." Then, "They lived there until 1776 when Jesse left to serve in the Militia, and his wife took her family to live with the family of her brother, Captain John Heritage." This last statement is in contradiction with the other date of 1775. Later in this history it mentions that "He was Captain of Company A, Dobbs County Militia, and participated in the Battle of Moore's Creek Bridge with Caswell on February 26, 1776." Perhaps a Rev. War buff can tell us when was this battle, 1775, or 1776? From: Lou Sams
