[3803]
During the War Between the States, he served in Company A, 41stMississippi Infantry Regiment. He died of disease while recuperatingfrom wounds received in action. His Confederate service record showshe was originally buried in the Fairgrounds Cemetery at Atlanta,Georgia.
Although the United Daughters of the Confederacy placed a headstone athis supposed grave site in the Edington Cemetery at Pontotoc,Mississippi some years ago, the family tradition that he was buriedthere is more than 99% certain to be incorrect.
Neither the Union or Confederate governments bore the responsibilityof shipping home for burial the remains of men who had died inmilitary service. Indeed, neither one even officially notified thesoldier's family of his death. Notification was done by the fallenman's comrades, when they had the next opportunity and writingmaterials to do so. They would sometimes, but not always, give adescription of the grave location, which was ever so rarely marked.Due to the astounding high casualties experienced by both sides, thevast majority of men were hastily buried in unmarked mass graves forsanitary reasons.
If the relatives of a deceased soldier desired to bury him at home, itwas their responsibility to travel to the location, attempt to locatethe grave, exhume and identify remains that had by then been dead anddecomposing for quite some time, and then make the return journeyhome. It is possible to find recorded instances where this actuallyoccured, but they were by far the exception rather than the norm.
By the time Charles died, Union armies were rampaging through all thesouthern states. With her husband and only other (adult) son Williamin Confederate service themselves, it would have been necessary forCharles' mother Penelope to travel by team and wagon from Mississippito Georgia to recover his remains --- an extremely long, difficult, and hazardous journey. And what was she to have done with herremaining six young children while she was gone? All considered, itis almost positively safe to say that Charles still lies where he wasoriginally buried in Georgia.
[3804] He died unmarried and without issue.
