[8770]
David was a veteran of the War of 1812; and in 1861, also raised aunit of volunteers from McMinn County for the Confederate Army, whichbecame Company H, 19th Tennessee Infantry Regiment. Due to hisadvanced age, he was assigned to recruiting duty, and later dischargedon 15 Oct 1862.
From "Chancery Court Records of McMinn County, Tennessee", compiled byReba Bayless Boyer in 1980: (pages 24-25, entry number 46) "WitnessWilliams Mayfield deposes that before 1860-1861, David A. Cobb had alarge landed, slave, and personal estate but was involved with aprodigal son, and after 1860 he made a deed of trust of his lands in ahurried way whilst in prison; that his land sold while he was in theWest and he realized nothing from the sale; that Cobb "the old man"left this country in 1865 or 1866 worth little if anything, everythinghe had being destroyed by the war and damage suits against him forthousands; that he carried away with him about $1000 or $1500 and nota bed to lay his frame on, his household goods being plundered anddestroyed in the war and after its close."
[8774]
In 1830, there were five Post Offices in McMinn County. David was thePost Master at Cobbs. This office was open from 1828-1843.
[8771] He was the son of Joseph Cobbs Sr and wife Mary.
[8772] At the time of his death, he was living with his brother in law,Williams T. Mayfield. None of his children were present at the time. His grave has never been located.
[8773]
On 07 Feb 1824, David purchased the Northwest Quarter of Section 26,Township 6, Range first West of the meridian, in McMinn County,Tennessee, beginning on the Northwest corner of said quarter. Section26 is divided by Conasauga Creek just below the entrance of CaneCreek. This land joined that of David's two brothers John and JosephJr and their father. The family group combined owned sections 14, 15,23, and 26 of Township 6, Range 1. Each member owned 160 acres, for atotal of 640 square acres, or one section. The dates of thesetransactions begin in 1820 and extend through 1829. More land wasacquired with the passage of time as evidenced by Tax Records.
[8775] At that time, he was listed as the widowed head of a humble householdcomposed of himself and a mulatto woman Judy Cobb and her threechildren; John born 1853, Thomas born 1855, and Caroline born 1857(all from Tennessee). It is presumed that Judy and her children wereformer slaves of Cobbs that had taken his name and entered his employafter the War Between the States. As she and her children can befound on subsequent census reports for Fannin County, it is safe tosay that sometime after this enumeration her association with DavidCobbs ended.
[8776] This enumeration showed that he had a real estate appraisement of$4000. He also declared that he was born in Tennessee. Further therewas an unidentified additional female listed in his household; oneHannah Grayson, age 60, born in South Carolina.
[8777] On this enumeration, he was listed as having $20,000 in Real Estateand $10,000 in Personal Estate wealth. His two sons Carter and JesseCobb were living next door.
