NOTE: July 2004. It has only been since DNA analysis has becomeavailable that Joseph Cobbs has been identified as a son of AmbroseCobb of Lincoln County, North Carolina.

Proof that Joseph Cobb and wife Mary were in South Carolina as earlyas 1798, is found in Book E, of the Land Records of Greenville County,South Carolina. In that year, they purchased two tracts of land inGreenville. The first tract of fifty acres was acquired for $20.00from one Samuel Hand, who had obtained it as a grant for militaryservice. This land was located on both sides of the Chickaroa Riverand near a corner made between Samuel Hand and Micajah Mayfield (theuncle of Freeda Presha Mayfield who eventually married the Cobb's sonDavid).
The second tract of land consisting of 500 acres, purchased fromThomas Wadsworth, was located on the waters of the Saluda, Tyger, andReedy Rivers. In 1805, they bought a third tract from one John Couchwhich was also located on the Chickaroa River.
[8755] It is noteworthy that he and his children continued the practice ofspelling their name as COBBS.

Prophetically for genealogists, his headstone is inscribed:
"O that my words were now written,
O that they were printed in a book,
That they were graven with an iron pen and bound in the rock forever,
For I know that my Redeemer liveth,
And that he shall stand at the latter"

On 20 Oct 1823, Joseph and Mary sold all their lands in GreenvilleDistrict, receiving a total of some $1300 for it. These transactionsare recorded in Book N, Greenville County Land Records. It is notedthat Joseph had been preparing for this relocation for quite sometime. The records of McMinn County, Tennessee (Book A, pp 297-298),show that on 10 Nov 1820, Joseph paid down on some 160 acres which hadapparently previously been indian land. He agreed to give $4.50 peracre plus interest, and had some ten years to settle the debt. In1824 and 1825, Joseph and son David A. Cobb each purchased 160additional acres in McMinn County. The elder Joseph signed his landover to his son Joseph, Jr.
[8759] In his household were 2 males under ten years of age, and 1 male 26-45years of age; 1 female under ten years of age, and 1 female 26-45years of age.
[8760] The census taker apparently erred during the enumeration of hisfamily. Joseph himself was completely omitted, except for being namedas the head of the household.

COBB, JOHN COX, SAMUEL FIRESTONE, and others.The Will names wife Mary; sons David, John, and Joseph; daughters Mary(wife of John Cox), Rizzy (wife of Samuel Firestone). Also named weregrandchildren Joseph Cobb, Jr (son of David), David Cobb (son ofJoseph); and children of John Cobb, Nancy, Harriet, John B., Juliet,and Angeline. Witnesses were Henry Bradford and Evan Jones. Executorswere sons David and Joseph Cobb.
