Obituary: Hartselle Enterprise, Hartselle, Alabama, 16 Feb. 1928.
Rev. W. T. Cobbs, beloved minister of Bethel and Flint Baptistchurches, died at his home in Hartselle at 10:30 a. m. Saturday,February 11, following an illness of two weeks. While not unexpected, the news of Rev. Cobbs' death cast a pall of gloom over the entirecommunity where the good man had spent the greater part of his longand useful life. Last summer Rev. Cobbs suffered a general breakdownin health, incapacitating him for several months. Late in the fall heregained some of his former strength and high hopes were entertainedfor his complete recovery, especially in view of the fact that he wasagain able to carry on his ministerial duties. However, this was notto be the case, Rev. Cobbs being stricken several weeks ago with theillness that resulted in death. From the first, although everythinghumanely possible was done to restore him to health, small hope washeld out for the recovery of the faithful minister, the end comingpeacefully and quietly Saturday morning, surrounded by members of hisdevoted family. W. T. Cobbs was born in Morgan county, near Hartselle,July 25, 1851. He was ordained a Baptist minister in 1882 and from1887 until called by death devoted his entire time to the ministry. Hespent his long and active life in Morgan, Cullman, and Limestonecounties with the exception of seven years ---- 1909-1916 -- he livedin Texas and one year -- 1892 -- in Columbus, Ga., where he served theFirst Avenue Baptist church of that city in the capacity of pastor. For the past nine years he had served both Bethel and Flint Baptistchurches, each of which owe their thrifty condition to the energy ofthis untiring man of God. To the members of these two churches hisdeath comes as a irreparable loss.Funeral services, attended by thesorrowing friends of the beloved ____ that packed the church andsurrounding churchyard, were held at Bethel at 2:30 Sunday afternoon,Rev. C. D. Boozer of...
[6148] For some reason he was not listed with the family on the 1860 census.
[6149] His mother in law, Mary Spain, was also living in his household atthat time.
