During the War Between the States, Federal troops burned theGiles County courthouse. The final settlement of the estate was madeon 06 April 1866, and the details had to be recalled from memory bythe Circuit Court Clerk. During the War, the clerk had madedistributions to the heirs, paying them with Confederate money whichwas of course worthless after the war. He was ordered by the 1866Court to make a second distribution in US dollars. He appealed thecase to the Supreme Court.

Edward Coffee was given the title of General on account of his part inthe campaigns against the Cherokee indians. He was born in 1793 andarrived in Rabun County, Georgia, about 1821, at age 28. His fivebrothers arrived with him or shortly thereafter. The first officialnotice taken of him appears in the minutes of the Inferior Court datedDecember 5, 1822. In this is shown that Edward and Winifred Coffeeobtained Letters of Administration on the estate of John Coffee, lateof said county, deceased. It was the custom of the Court to appointthe widow as one of the administrators of an estate. We have onlythis record to show that it was one of Edward Coffee's brothers whohad died. The widow of John Coffee, Winifred, afterwards marriedSolomon Beck.
Edward served as a Justice of the Inferior Court for more than thirtyyears. He also served as Sheriff for a time. He was elected StateRepresentative from Rabun County from 1831-1836. He was also electedSenator twice...1841-42, then again from 1855 until his death in 1858.
