[140]
An interesting story has been passed down concerning Rowland Cobb, that is one of the very few times in my forty years of genealogicalresearch experience that has turned out to be supported by documentaryevidence. Combining lore with fact the story goes as follows.
It is known that Rowland and his brother Andrew married sisters; MaryAnn and Lavenia Edwards, respectively. Andrew died in October 1844 inFloyd County, Georgia, leaving Lavenia with yet three small children.Rowland then took the widow Cobb 'under wing' and situated them nextdoor to his own family, where they are found on the 1850 census forGordon County, Georgia. Also listed in Rowland's household was thetwice widowed mother of the Edwards sisters, Elizabeth Miller EdwardsMorgan. Lavenia remarried, to George W. Eaton in Gordon County inJanuary 1854.
By 1856, Rowland had determined to move to Texas. When the movebegan, the original party was composed of two families; that ofRowland, and that of George Eaton. This large group did not completethe move intact. The Eatons (with Elizabeth Morgan) dropped out inAlabama; as did also one of Rowland's sons John L. Cobb. These peoplecan be found on the 1860 census of Fayette County. Another ofRowland's sons, Warren, dropped out in Sevier County, Arkansas, wherehe died the following year. The remainder did complete the journey toFannin County, Texas.
Several years pass by. By 1860, Rowland's family was well establishedin Fannin County. By then all of his children were married and ontheir own, save for one, Rufus, who was still yet just a lad. Thenthe War Between the States began.
According to family legend, Rowland and his wife Mary Ann becameconcerned for the relatives they had left back in Alabama. Rowlandand his sons Kelsey and Rufus journeyed back to Fayette County, totake care of their relations there. Kelsey had apparently made hisintentions known to offer his military service to the Confederacy, andhis wife preferred to stay with her family in Georgia while he wasaway. After depositing her and their children in Georgia, Kelseyreturned to Fayette County, where he filed his Will and then enlistedin Company C, 26th Alabama Infantry Regiment, in March 1862. He wasimmediately ordered to Virginia, where he was killed in action on June28 of that same year.
Back in Fayette County, the war also took its toll. Before 1865,George Eaton and Elizabeth Morgan had both died, as had Rowland'syoung son Rufus. It is known that Lavenia survived the war and livedfor a time with one of her sons, Albert P. Cobb, in St. Clair County,Alabama. However, she was apparently also deceased by 1870. Lavenia'sremaining children, both sons, had also joined the same 26th AlabamaRegiment and were away to the war.
By the time the war ended, Rowland was quite possibly the only familysurvivor in Fayette County. It is known he returned to Texas, anddied in Fannin County in 1867. The widow of son Kelsey remarried in1866, but remained in Georgia until at least 1870.
There is no hard documentation to verify that Rowland himself returnedto Alabama. However, there is proof of every other part of the story.
[141] He was the son of Rev. John S. Cobb and wife Frankie Smith of PickensDistrict, South Carolina.
[142] He and his brother Andrew had moved their families there about 1836.
[143] Rowland's brother Andrew died in 1844, in Floyd County, Georgia, leaving a widow and three small children. Rowland took the widow Cobb'under wing' and situated them next door to his own family, where theyare found on the 1850 census of Gordon County, Georgia.
[144] In January of that same year, Rowland and wife Mary had become chartermembers of the First Baptist Church of Ladonia. The church is locatedon Main Street, and was originally constructed of timber hauled byOxen from Jefferson, Texas, a hundred miles to the East. The membershad to sit on split log benches inside the structure until October1865, when pews were built by Hyman Cobb (unknown at this time) forthe price of $1.00 or $00.50, depending on the length of the pew.
[145]
Rowland Cobb left Gordon County, Georgia, on October 7, 1856, andcamped in Fannin County, Texas, on November 20, 1856. This letter tohis brother James, of February 4, 1857, tells of Rowland's travels.Copied as written, spelling "as is" (paragraph indenture has beenadded for clarity).
