[9241]
During the War Between the States, he served in Company C, 1stTennessee Cavalry Regiment (Confederate).
THE PARIS MORNING NEWS, Friday, March 5, 1926, p.2: 'J. M. Lattimore,87 years old pioneer settler of the Roxton section and a civil warveteran, died at his home at that city at 5:30 o'clock Thursdaymorning. He was one of the best known men in this part of Lamarcounty. Funeral services will be held this afternoon at - o'clock atthe First Methodist church at Roxton. the Revs. Goodspeed andSchrimshire will officiate. Mr. Lattimore is survived by a wife andseven sons and one daughter. He is the father of R. L. and A. W.Lattimore of Paris, and John and Roy Lattimore and Mrs. Ella Horton ofRoxton. He was born August 7, 1844 (sic), in McMinn county, Tenn.,where one of his sisters, Mrs. Callie Rowland survives him. Atsixteen, he enlisted in the Confederate army, and served for fouryears, spending ten months as a prisoner at Camp Morton, Indianapolis, and being among the last group of men to be exchanged before thesurrender. He served under Capt. John Jolie in Company A, FirstTennessee Cavalry. On March 7, 1870, he married, Miss Clementine Ware, and they left for Texas, settling near Jefferson. Mr. Lattimore farmedfor a number of years at that section, and became a large landholder. His wife died in 1898, and two years later he married Mrs. ElizabethFields. There were twelve children by the first marriage and Ten- bythe second. Mr. Lattimore owned a great deal of land in this countyand on the second marriage, he divided his property equally with hischildren. He was known far and wide as an upright citizen, and afarmer of more than ordinary success.'
*The following obituary of W. B. Adams substantiates JosephLattimore's service in the Confederate army; THE PARIS MORNING NEWS,Thursday, April 8, 1926: 'The funeral of W. B. Adams, 82, aConfederate veteran, who died at the home of his daughter in RoxtonMonday night after an illness of only a few days, was held Tuesdayafternoon at the McDonald cemetery near Howland. His death made thethird Confederate veteran to die in the Roxton community within thelast few weeks, the others being J. M. LATTIMORE and H. C. McCLOUD. Hehad only recently moved to Roxton to make his home with a daughter. Helived for many years near Glory and a considerable part of the timethat he lived there he served as justice of the peace.'
[9242] This came one year after moving to southwest Georgia for a briefperiod. Not finding that place to his liking, he returned to McMinnCounty in January 1870. Two months later he left for Texas.
[10875] There were twelve children produced from this marriage. Only sevenare known. It is possible the remainder died as infants.
[10890] There were ten children produced from this marriage.
