Ambrose Cobbs became a church warden of Bruton Parish, atWilliamsburg, and his name can be found today on a plaquecommemorating the early history of that parish, on the wall of BrutonParish Church, Colonial Williamsburg.
On March 18, 1716, he along with John Marat (Jean Marot), and JohnHubbard, were given a license to operate an "ordinary" (a publichouse) in Williamsburg, "to supply lodging and diet for travelers withstabelage".
In his Will, dated 24 April 1718, he named his daughter Francis; andsons Robert, Thomas, John, Edmund and Ambrose. Witnesses were AnnFrith, Joseph Frith, and Matthew Pierce. His wife and sons Robert andThomas were made the Executors.
All his children except Thomas eventually moved away from York County.Thomas inherited land on Queen's Creek, in that part of Henrico Countythat later became part of Chesterfield County, from his father.Thomas, in turn, passed this land on to his sons.
Beginning in 1790, the United States has enumerated its population bycensus, taken every tenth year. The name Cobb(s) continued to appearon every census of York, Henrico, and Chesterfield Counties, Virginia,until 1840.
[8084] He made his Will on April 24, 1718, wich was proved on June 16th ofthat same year, indicating he had died in the interim period.

Dexter Grady Cobbs
Funeral services for Dexter Grady Cobbs, 87, of Snead will be at 2p.m. Sunday, Feb. 1, 2004, at Gum Pond Primitive Baptist Church, ElderGuy Hunt officiating, with burial in Hebron Cemetery in Hulaco.
Snead Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Cobbs died Friday, Jan. 30, at Cullman Regional Medical Center. Hewas born March 6, 1916, in Morgan County to Jonathan P. and SavanahRyan Cobbs. He was a retired technician at Monsanto Chemical Company,where he worked for 23 years. He attended Mt. Moriah Primitive BaptistChurch. He and his wife sold homegrown fruits and vegetables aroundthe community.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include his wife, Edna O. Wood Cobbs; a son, Dennis (Sara)Cobbs of Blakely, Ga.; three daughters, Nellie (Buddy) Rodenberry ofHolly Pond, Rehna (Otto) Boesswetter of Cullman and Reba (Danny)Skillman of Altoona; 12 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and abrother, Herbert D. Cobbs of Gum Pond.
Pallbearers will be his nephews.
Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
