[3856] Tradition has it he was a casualty of the War Between the States(1861-1865). And a letter written by his son, Jesse, in 1905, doesinfer that Thomas died either during the war or very shortlythereafter. The positive identification of a Confederate servicerecord is virtually impossible, due to the complex system of militaryorganization employed by the State of Mississippi during the war, andthe incompleteness of some records (and the duplicity of others) inboth the National Archives and Mississippi State Archives in Jackson.It is known that in any event, he was deceased before 1870.
[3857] This bit of data is based on family legend and may or may not becorrect. The lack of information concerning Thomas Ward's Confederatemilitary service is the problem. If he did in fact die while inservice, the question is, "Where?" If his unit was anywhere near hishome, the possibility exists that he was truely buried in thiscemetery. If however, his unit was more than several days journeyaway (by team and wagon), the odds are astronomically against thisbeing the actual place of his burial.
[10045] The courthouse of Fayette County, Alabama, has burned several timesand all early marriage records have been lost. However, as it hasbeen positively established that both the Ward and Taylor familieswere residents of Fayette County, Alabama, in the 1840's; and as thefirst four children of this marriage were born in Alabama, it is asafe assumption that Thomas and Penelope married in Fayette County,about 1841.
