He enlisted on 01 Jun 1846, in Company M, 1st Regiment, TennesseeMounted Volunteers, for service during the War With Mexico. He wasseriously injured on 21 Aug 1846, by the explosion of the steamboatEnterprise on the Rio Grande River. Unable to continue performing theduties of a soldier, he received a surgeon's certificate of disabilityans was discharged on 28 Mar 1847.

[NOTE: It seems John M. Cuthbertson may have had some relationshipwith the Eaton-Cobb family that may have dated back to the period inGeorgia and South Carolina --- just what kind of relationship is asyet unknown. He was named (with no additional information beinggiven) in the personal bible of George W. Eaton. He witnessed Eaton'sLast Will & Testament in Fayette County, Alabama, on 29 August 1863.Therefore clearly, his relationship with Eaton was more than merelycasual. It is known that George Eaton had married Lavenia EdwardsCobb in Gordon County, Georgia, in January 1854. She was the widow ofAndrew Ambrose Cobb, and mother in law of Martha Ellen Taylor (sisterof Cuthbertson's wife Mary A. Taylor). At face value, it appears thatCuthbertson's relationship with the Cobbs was only indrectly throughmarriage, but his apparent intimacy with George Eaton may indicatesomething deeper. Perhaps we'll know someday.]

At that time, this family was living in the 15th Division of FayetteCounty, and the enumeration was done on 18 Dec 1850.
On this census the name was spelled Culberson. At that time, thisfamily was living next door to one George Warde (age 80, born England)and wife Mary (age 56, born England). It is known that wife Mary'ssister Penelope Taylor, married one Thomas H. Ward.
[2094] Also living in Pontotoc County was wife Mary's sister Penelope, whomarried Thomas H. Ward.
[2095] Also living in Henderson County, were wife Mary's sisters Sarah (whomarried David Freeman), Martha E. (who married Wilson H. Cobb), andthe families of brothers Jesse J. Taylor and William S. Taylor (bothof whom were deceased).
[9847] The early marriage records of Fayette County, Alabama, have been lostdue to several fires. However, it is clearly established that boththe Taylors and John M. Cuthbertson were residents of Fayette Countyat the time this marriage occured and that their first six childrenwere born in Alabama.
