McDowellSource: The Kingston Gazette, Dec.28, 1817 (Canada) Timothy McGiness: Shocking Murder ! - On Thursday morning, the 19th inst. Mr. Thomas Jackson of Amherst Island in the bay of Qunite, went into the field for the purpose of foddering his cattle. Not returning as soon as was expected, his family became uneasy, search was made, and his body found about nine o'clock in the evening, murdered in a most shocking manner; having received a severe cut above the right eye, which occasioned it to drop out, and two large cuts on the back of the head, the whole apparently done with an axe. The Coroner's report was "wilful muder by force person unknown". A young man by the name of McGinnis, has been arrested on suspicion and was commited to prison in this city on Thursday night last. We are told that Mr. Jackson was much esteemed by his neighbours, and has left a wife and one child to lament his untimely end. His age was 49 years. The Tales of Amherst Island; H. C. Burleigh page 116; (Canada) THE MURDER OF THOMAS JACKSON "Timothy McGuiness who was charged with the murder of Thomas Jackson, was acquitted by the Grand Jury and discharged in court." Seventeen years later both Cynthia Casey and Sara Eliza Wilson wrote letters to the Kingston newspaper which stated that they had heard that Joseph Huffman had been hanged for murder in the United States. Before his end he confessed to the murder of Thomas Jackson while living on Amherst Island, Midland District, Province of Upper Canada.
