Mrs. Emma J. Kitto, 73, Dies at Dexter
Dexter, Nov. 24, - Mrs. Emma J. Hartman Kitto, 73, widow of John F. Kitto, died about 2 this morning at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Edward L. Sterlings, Dexter. Death was believed due to a heart ailment. Mrs. Kitto was in her usual good health until about 8 last night when she was stricken seriously ill.
Mrs. Kitto was born in the town of Alexandria April 24, 1864, a daughter of the late David and Puella Worden Hartman. The early part of her life was spent in the town of her birth.
She moved to Chaumont when she was about eleven years old. She married to John F. Kitto, then of Chaumont, on Oct. 18, 1885, in Watertown. Mr. and Mrs. Kitto lived for a few years at Rices.
For about 37 years Mrs. Kitto resided in the town of Hounsfield, where her husband died Sept. 26, 1935. She had resided with her daughter most of the time since his death.
Surviving are two children, Mrs. Sterling and Jay Kitto of Limerick; two grandchildren, Clifford J. Sterling and Jack F. Sterling, Dexter; a sister, Mrs. Leon Phelps, Chaumont, and a brother Jay Hartman, Depauville.
Funeral services will be held at 2 Friday afternoon at the home of her daughter.
Rev. John R. Campbell, minister of the Presbyterian churches of Dexter and Brownville, will officiate.
Burial will be in the Dexter Cemetery.

Chaumont, Jan. 30-Leon O. Phelps, 77, lifelong resident of this village, died at his home here this morning at 7:30 following an illness of about two weeks.
Mr. Phelps was born in Chaumont, Aug. 13, 1864, a son of Governor [Governeur] and Cornelia Patterson Phelps. For many years he was a boat builder and repairer. He had also been street commissioner. He was a member of the volunteer fire department.
He married Miss Elida Hartman of Chaumont, on Jan 1, 1888, in this village. She died here Jan. 20, 1939.
Mr. Phelps is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Gordon S. (Constance) Case and Mrs. William (Goldie) Flannery, both of Dexter; one grandson, Richard Case, Fort Niagara; one brother, Perl Phelps, Chaumont, and two sisters, Mrs. Cora Jackson of Camden and Mrs. May Johnson, Chaumont.
Funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon at 2 from the home. Rev. Albert Abbott, pastor of the First Methodist church of Watertown will officiate.
Burial will be in Cedar Grove cemetery, Chaumont.
