Squire BOYD
After an illness of many years which terminated at his late home in Middlesex, NY, August 18, 1906, the Rev. Squire Boyd, a member of the Northern New York Conference since April 25, 1865, passed from his home on earth to his better home above.

Brother Boyd was born of Scotch-Irish and Dutch parentage. He was educated in the common schools and in rome Academy and for a time he taught in the public schools.

When a lad he was converted and for a time he walked in the light, but hearing the call of God to the work of the Christian ministry, which he feared to speak of to anyone, he soon lost the witness of acceptance and for ten years wandered in the ways of sin and wickedness.

In the fall of 1861 God came in great power to old Steuben charge, and under the labors of Rev. C.P Lyford, he again found God, and the call again coming, "Go work in my vineyard," he was not disobedient to the heavenly vision. He was soon licensed to exhort by Rev. W.A. Nichols and as a local preacher by Rev. Robert Flint, and for a few months he supplied a part of Remsen charge.

For six weeks he served as delegate to the United States Christian Commission in the army of the Potomac. He was admitted on trail in the Black River Conference April 25, 1865, and was received in full connection in the same Conference April 18, 1867. He was ordained Deacon, April 1867, by Bishop Edmond S. Janes and was ordained Elder April 1869 by Bishop D.W. Clark.

He served the following appointments: Macomb, Nicholville, Belmont, Spragues Corners and Somerville, Bucks Bridge, South Richland and Hannibal Center. Brother Boyd loved the work of the ministry, and his poor health was a source of very great sorrow. His last years were filled with great suffering, but at last he passed away like a tired child asleep in the arms of its mother.

Those who knew him best testify that he was a good man, a faithful and conscientious brother and much devoted to his work.

October 15, 1861, he was united in marriage to Miss Alice O. Dopp of Western, New York, who with eight children, two daughters and six sons, survived him. He has left a legacy to the church and to the world, the value of which is beyond all human calculation. Three of his sons are honored members of the Central New York Conference and engaged in effective service in the ministry, L.S. Boyd being secretary of his Conference. The children are all workers in the Master's vineyard. The funeral service was held at the Methodist Episcopal Church in Middlesex, N.Y., in charge of Rev. E.M. Mills, D.D., presiding elder of Geneva District. Several of his former pastors were present and took some part in the service. His body was laid to rest in the beautiful cemetery at Geneva, N.Y., awaiting he resurrection of the just. C E. Dorr

MARRIAGE CONFLICT: October 15: found in the "Family of James Boyd" written by Kenneth R. Boyd, 1978, unpaged, [929.273 A1 #2473, Family History Library in Salt Lake City, UT] DEATH: Obituary of Squire Boyd. He died at home in Middlesex, NY
FUNERAL: held at the Methodist Episcopal Church in Middlesex.

From THE BOYD FAMILY, found in SLC Library
Squire attended Rome Academy. One of his professors in math complimented him very highly for solving some problem which many could not solve. Later he taught district school. He was converted under the preaching of the Rev. C.P. Lyford in the South Hill Church near Westernville, New York. Squire was received into the Black River Conference in full connection April 18, 1867. He was ordained by Bishop Simpson, one of the greatest of Methodist Bishops, in the First Methodist Church at Rome, New York. He and his wife went out into nothern New York, which was largely missionary territory at that time. In many of his charges there was no church, the services being held in school houses. More than once Squire left the house in the morning and left the family with no food in the house. But, he always came back with food. "God provided when they trusted him". He would be able to kill some game or someone would give him food.

The charges he served were: Macomb, Nicholville, Belmont, Spragues' Corner (near Antwerp) and Sommerville, Bucks' Bridge (near Potsdam), South Richland, and Hannibal Center. In 1877 he took a retired relation and moved onto a twenty acre farm in the outskirts of Mexico, New York. The cost of this farm was $2800 including some stock and tools. The funds for the purchase were furnished by Chauncey Boyd and an inheritance of Alice Boyd from her father, Alvy Dopp.
br> He became a member of the Northern N.Y. Conference of the Methodist Church on 25 Apr 1865. He served churches at Belmont, Spragues' Corners [near Antwerp], Bucks' Bridge [near Potsdam], South Richland [now Fernwood], and Hannibal Center. After retiring, lived on a farm near Mexico and with brother, Harry, near Middlesex. All are in New York.

Rome Citizen Newspaper Friday, August 24, 1877 Suicide Mr. Van Dresar, of Western, a daughter of Mr Alex Bowman, of Canterbury Hill, committed suicide on Tuesday by cutting her throat with a razor. Temporary aberration of mind is supposed to be the cause of the deed. Friday, August 31, 1877 An Afflicted Family. We mentioned last week the suicide of Mrs. Francis VanDresar of Western, who cut her throat on Wednesday, the 22d inst. The deceased was a daughter of Alexander Bowman, of this town, and her sudden death has called the attention of the community to the great affliction which her family has suffered the present summer. For a number of weeks past different members of the family have been severe sufferers from typhoid fever -- her father, mother, and her sisterÕs son all becoming sick with that disease at the time of her death. All the members of the family who were not sick suffered much from sympathy, and one brother, after a severe illness, became insane and was taken to the asylum at Utica some three weeks since. Mrs. VanDresar had a family of eight children, the youngest of which, a babe only a few months old, was taken sick the day before the motherÕs death and died in time to be buried in the same grave with her. On Saturday her father, Mr. Bowman, died, and was buried on Monday. Mr. BowmanÕs widow, and her grandson, Fred Martin, have passed the dangerous crisis in their disease, and are said to be recovering.
