Posssibly the older man is "Uncle Sam".

(Mary Ann 'Polly' was a daughter of Philip and Mary Ann TAYLOR)

** Archibald Montgomery BENNETT:
The following information was provided to JohnL in the form of a copy of a newspaper article provided to him by DavidG:
“Lennox Herald”, November 4, 1876 re: the death and funeral of Samuel BENNET, Provost of Dunbarton, Scotland, which states:
-born in Saltcoats, Ayr, in 1815
-qualified for ministry at University of Glasgow
-worked as missionary with poor in Glasgow
-settled in Dunbarton in 1851
-in conjunction with his brother established the “Dunbarton Herald” and the “Lennox Herald” newspapers
-returned to council of Dunbarton in 1870 and was elected provost
-took a leading part in the Chartist Movement for 30 years
-sons Samuel and Archibald were pall-bearers together with his brothers William and Thomas, his son-inlaw, George LANGLANDS, and his nephew, James BENNETT
Gazateer of Scotland: as interpreted divides Saltcoats into 3 parishes one of which is the Parish of Ardrossan.
This is the only one that records the birth of Samuel BENNET in 1815. The birth of Samuel BENNETT to Samuel BENNET and Rosina POLLOCK on August 12, 1815 is registered.
