Mary Ann & John Arthur Tilbury

Mrs. Mary Ann & John Arthur Lewansque
Buckinghamshire, Middlesex, Surrey

Who was "Lewansque"? Did he exist?

LEWANSQUE

In 1891 Thomas TILBURY and wife Annie [WEST], from Penn, Buckinghamshire, were living at 29 Westcombe Cottages, [Colvin st.?] St. Peter's, Hammersmith, and with them was grandson John LEWANSQUE age 9 (b. Hammersmith, Middlesex).

There seems to be no registration of birth for a child of that name.

The only LEWANSQUE appearing at present (August 2008/9) in FreeBMD listings are:

Mary LEWANSQUE d. 4Q 1887 age 39 (Croydon 2a/123)
John Arthur LEWANSQUE d. 3Q 1904 age 21 (Aston 6d/151)

However Mary [Ann] appears in the 1881 census thus:

1881: lvg. St Michaels Rd, Croydon, Surrey
Mary A. LEMANSQUE Head (W) age 33 b. Amersham, Buckingham (Rustic Worker, Florist)
Arthur CENT, Cousin (M) age 50 b. Canterbury, Kent (Rustic Worker, Florist)
Lucy A. CENT, Cousin (M) age 42 b. London, Middlesex
- Harry F. CENT, Cousin age 15 b. Hammersmith, Middlesex (Florists Assistant)
- Florence L. CENT, Cousin age 12 b. Hammersmith, Middlesex (Scholar)
- Chas. A. CENT, Cousin age 8 b. Hammersmith, Middlesex (Scholar)
John GRAHAM, Appentice age 15 b. Holborn, Middlesex (Rustic Worker, Appren)

Other mentions of LEWANSQUE are:

Post Office Directory of Surrey, 1878
LEWANSQUE Mary (Mrs.), designer & worker in rustic work, Earlswood rd., Redhill, Surrey
The Furniture Gazette, 1879 (pg. 311)
LEWANSQUE, Mary Ann, manufacturer of rustic work, 9, Station-Crescent, West Croydon, for £22  10s., to Consolidated Credit &c. Co. Filed Oct. 16. [Bill of sale?]
Debtors, 1880
Bills of sale (binding assets to a creditor/lender) in England and Wales, October to December 1880
LEWANSQUE
Debtors, Insolvents and Bankrupts, 1881
Bills of sale (binding assets to a creditor/lender), insolvencies and bankruptcies in England and Wales, July to September 1881
LEWANSQUE

John Arthur's mother might have been a hypothetical wife of Thomas TILBURY jnr. - of whom there seems to be no trace after 1871 - but from the information on the birth certificate she was almost certainly Thomas & Annie's daughter Mary Ann:

Certified copy of an entry of birth, Fulham district, St. Paul Hammersmith sub-district, Middlesex
No. 336 - 1 April 1882 at 55 Angel Road: John Arthur, Boy
Mother: Mary Ann TILBURY (Rustic Worker) [no maiden name given, no father's name given], of 55 Angel Road, Hammersmith, who declared the birth on 27 April 1882
Registrar: William B. CROFT

Thomas & Annie were previously living at "Angel Cottages" so that it seems probable Mary Ann gave birth to her son at their home. However, the 1887 death certificate indicates that she returned to Croydon:

Death in the district and sub-district of Croydon, Surrey
No. 1 - 29 October 1887 at 40 Queens Road, Croydon: Mary LEWANSQUE, Female age 39 years, Laundress
Cause of death: Tonsilitis, Cardiac; certified by F. W. Perkins CASE, M.D.
J. SIMMONS present at the death, 40 Queens Road, Croydon
Registered on 1 November 1887, Edwin BAILLY, Registrar

Thus at age 5 John Arthur became an orphan; in 1891 John LEWANSQUE, grandson, was living with Thomas & Annie in Hammersmith. In 1901 he seems invisible, whether as TILBURY or LEWANSQUE (or any similar name). He reappears only at his - early - death, in Birmingham:

Death in the district of Aston, sub-district of Deritend, County of Birmingham
No. 199 - 2 July 1904 at 4 Back, 19 Catell Road, John Arthur LEWANSQUE age 21 years, Labourer at Gun Factory
Cause of death: Asphyxia from constrained position of head after cardiac depression from vomiting; accidental death
Certificate received from Isaac BRADLEY, Coroner for Birmingham; Inquest held 5 July 1904
Registered 6 July 1904, S. H. HUDSON, Registrar

The fact that on registering his birth John Arthur's mother Mary Ann gives no maiden name, no father's name, but was a "Rustic Worker" is not conclusive, but perhaps the best indication available of her having been Thomas & Annie's unmarried daughter. Whether or not LEWANSQUE was his father, or who he may have been, remains to be discovered. On both death certificates cardiac difficulties are cited.

The above-mentioned publications and documents seem to indicate a somewhat sad and difficult life?

DENNIS

The previous attribution of Jabez DENNIS as husband of Mary Ann and son-in-law of Thomas & Annie may thus be considered as erroneous, supported by the dates and places of birth of the two Mary Anns:

CENT (CRUX)

The 1881 census lists the CENT family as 'cousins' of Mary Ann LEMANSQUE (LEWANSQUE : TILBURY); however, exploring the family's ascendants sheds no light on that relationship, and the family was CRUX, not CENT ....

- Florence CRUX b. c.1868 Hammersmith, Middlesex [Horence]
[?Charles Haveland CRUX b. 4Q 1872 (Brentford 3a/92)]

Thus until 1881 no obvious family relationship appears between CRUX and TILBURY, or the hypothetical LEWANSQUE.

Mary Ann, Arthur and Lucy, all died in Croydon in 1887:

1Q 1887
Arthur CRUX d. age 56
4Q 1887
Mary LEWANSQUE d. age 39
Lucy Ann CRUX d. age 47

The subsequent marriages and places of residence of Arthur & Lucy's surviving children shed no light on any CRUX : TILBURY : LEWANSQUE relationship.
