Henry & Emma's son (and 9th child) George Alfred TILBURY was born 4 September 1881 at 9 Uverdale Road, Chelsea, London; by 1901 he was living at no. 61 Uverdale Road.
In May 1903 he married Mabel Agnes HILDITCH (in Enfield, Middlesex); they had three children:
By the time Walter was due to arrive, the family had moved to no. 10 Peabody Buildings, Laurel Street, Chelsea, where Walter Frederick was born on 10 December 1903. With other children in the neighbourhood Walter attended Ashburnham Secondary School in Upcerne Road, and began working as a labourer, later driving a lorry for the South West Gas Board.
Walter decided to emigrate to Australia, and on 24 October 1924 departed for Melbourne on board the Commonwealth Liner. He remained in Australia for some eight years, then returned to England in 1932. He married his first wife in 1936 at Kensington Register Office.
During WWII Walter served in the Royal Artillery manning searchlights along the south coast of England.
Between 1937 and 1942, four sons were born to the couple; sadly their first baby, Michael George, died, and was buried in East Sheen Cemetery in Putney; thus I, another David Tilbury, became their eldest child. I in turn passed on the traditional name to one of my sons.
War-times are always troubled times, and Walter Frederick migrated to Essex and another family environment, which was eventually completed with another three sons... amongst whose given names are Frederick and Walter! Returning for a while to Devon, his parents and his first family, where he remained for some years, eventually - in 1960 - Walter decided to continue his life in Essex.
In his own way, Walter ensured that the Tilbury name will not be forgotton - and perhaps it is true that the Tilburys have gypsy blood in them!
