#76234
(A) has the Group 1 most common H37 Haplotype and a genetic distance of
zero when compared to that Haplotype.
#76234
(A) shares Moses Stark [1793-1860] as a most recent common ancestor with
#98044 (B). They then share the same common ancestors from Moses to
Aaron Stark [the Elder]. Their genetic results are a perfect match over
the H37 Haplotype resulting in a Genetic distance of Zero. Because they
are descendants of two known and different sons of Moses —
and —
they both have the same allele values over all of the H37
Haplotype DYS markers, then by deduction, Moses most likely had the same
Allele values at these markers. A and B are off-set by 2 generations
from Moses; that is, A is two generations nearer to the generation of
Moses than B.
When
genetically compared, the probability A & B shared Moses as a common
ancestor within the last 4 generations is 83.49%. This is
the more pessimistic probability which presumes the grandfather of B has
the same allele values as A. When genetically compared, the probability
A & B shared Moses as a common ancestor within the last 6
generations is 93.29%. This presumes that if A had a grandson, his
grandson would have the same allele values as B. This would be the more optimistic
probability.
Aaron
[the Elder] lived 10 generations before A and 12 generations before
B. When genetically compared, the probability A & B share
Aaron [the Elder] as a common ancestor within the last 11 generations is
99.29%; within the last 13 generations is 99.71%.
These
genetic probabilities suggests A & B are most likely related
according to the genealogy presented. |

#230493 has results over Markers 1 through 25. He
has a perfect 25/25 match ratio to the H25 Modal Haplotype. Their is a
99.12%
probability he shares a common ancestor with other members with this
haplotype within the last 20 generations. #230493 and #78077 share Enoch
Stark as a common ancestor. #78077 has a mutation at Marker DYS449. When
they are compared, their is a 93.74% probability they share a common
ancestor within 20 generations; and a 71.48% probability within 11
generations and share Aaron Stark as a common ancestor. The results
over 25 markers are sufficient to place #230493 in Subgroup 1A, descendants of William Stark
[1664-1730]. FTDNA estimates his 26 through 37 marker results will be
available 05/04/2012.

#78077
(C) has a genetic distance of 1 when compared to the Group 1 most common
H37 Haplotype. He Has an allele value of 30 at Marker 21 (DYS-449)
while the most common Allele value at this marker is 29.
#78077
(C) is a descendant of Enoch Stark [1794-1864]; a brother of Moses Stark
[1793-1860]. A & B share Moses as a common ancestor. Moses and Enoch
were sons of Jonathan J. Stark [1773-1850]; the most recent common
ancestor of A, B, & C. Because A & B were a perfect match over
their H37 Haplotype comparisons, Moses most likely had the same H37
Haplotype. However, when C is compared to either A or B over the H37
Haplotype, there is a mutation at Marker 21 between these lines of
descent resulting in a genetic distance of 1. With the genetic and
genealogy information available, we can only report the source of the
Marker 21 mutation could have been Enoch himself, or could have
occurred in any of the generations in this descendant line; which
would also include C.
When
genetically compared, the probability A & C shared: 1) Jonathan J.
Stark [1773-1850] as a common
ancestor within the last 6 generations is 76.87%; 2) Jonathan
Stark [the Elder] as a common ancestor within the last 8 generations is
88.06%; and 3) Aaron Stark [the Elder] as a common ancestor within the
last 11 generations is 95.84%.
Using
the confidence threshold of 85%, there is less certainty the genetic
comparison of A & C can predict they share Jonathan J. Stark as a
common ancestor as reported in the genealogy; but this result doesn't
totally rule out the possibility. The genealogy suggests Jonathan Stark
[the Elder] was a common ancestor; the genetic prediction improved to a
probability of 88.06%. The 95.84% genetic prediction Aaron Stark [the
Elder] was a common ancestor provides considerable confidence he was a
common ancestor of A & C as suggested by the genealogy.
D
and C share Jonathan Stark [the Elder] as a common ancestor and both
have results over the H67 Haplotype. When genetically compared over the
H67 Haplotype, the probability D and C share Jonathan as a common
ancestor within 8 or 9 generations is between 82.52% and 87.67%.
According to the genealogy, D and C are off-set by one generation. The
same comparison of D & E1 has a probability they share Jonathan
Stark [the Elder] as a common ancestor in the last 9 generations is
96.46%. When C & E1 are compared over H67, the probability they
share Jonathan Stark [the Elder] was a common ancestor in the last
8 or 9 generations is between 94.73% and 96.68% (One generation
off-set). When D & E1 are compared over H67; the probability they
share Jonathan Stark [the Elder] as a common ancestor within the last 9
generations is 96.46%.
The
various comparisons of C, D, and E1 over the H67 Haplotype provides
considerable confidence these three men are descendants of Jonathan
Stark [the Elder]

kit. Results are available for Markers 1 through 12 and 26 through 37. FTDNA estimates test results
for Markers 13 through 25 will be available 07/02/2010. The results over
the Markers available for analysis suggests #178528 is most likely a
descendant of Aaron Stark [1608-1685]. Will await the results from
Markers 13-25 before commenting further.

#48711
(D) has a genetic distance of 1 when compared to the Group 1 most common
H37 Haplotype. He has an allele value of 37 at Marker 34
(DYS-CDYa)
while the most common Allele value at this marker is 36.
#48711
(D) is a descendant of Rev. Abraham Stark [1781-1857]. D shares Abraham
as a common ancestor with #165568 (E1). Member E1 has the most common
H37 haplotype. When D and E1 are genetically compared, they have a
genetic distance of 1. D and E1 were also tested over the H67 Haplotype;
their total genetic distance remaining 1 —
having a perfect match over Markers 38 through 67.
When
genetically compared over the H37 Haplotype, the probability D and E1
share Abraham as a common ancestor within the last 7 generations is
82.51%. Over these same markers, the probability they share Aaron
Stark [the Elder] as a common ancestor within 12 generations is 96.94%.
When compared over the H67 Haplotype, the probability within the last 7
generations is 91.32% and the probability within 12 generations is
99.12%.
Using
the confidence threshold of 85%, there would seem to less certainty the genetic
comparison of D & E1 over the H37 Haplotype could predict they share
Abraham as a
common ancestor as reported in the genealogy; but their comparison over
the H67 Haplotype provides more confidence he was a
common ancestor of D & E1 as suggested by the genealogy. The 99.12% genetic prediction Aaron Stark [the
Elder] was a common ancestor provides considerable confidence he was a
common ancestor of D & E1 as suggested by the genealogy.
D
and C share Jonathan Stark [the Elder] as a common ancestor and both
have results over the H67 Haplotype.

(E) has a genetic distance of 1 when compared to the Group 1 most common
H37 Haplotype. He has an allele value of 35 at Marker 34
(DYS-CDYa)
while the most common Allele value at this marker is 36.
#119763
(E) is a descendant of Rev. Abraham Stark [1781-1857]. E shares Abraham
as a common ancestor with #165568 (E1). Member E1 has the most common
H37 haplotype. When D and E1 are genetically compared, they have a
genetic distance of 1. When
genetically compared over the H37 Haplotype, the probability E and E1
share Abraham as a common ancestor within the last 7 generations is
82.51%; the probability they share Jonathan Stark [the Elder] as a
common ancestor within the last 9 generations is 91%; And the probability they share Aaron
Stark [the Elder] as a common ancestor within 12 generations is 96.94%.
Using
the confidence threshold of 85%, there would seem to be less certainty the genetic
comparison of E & E1 over the H37 Haplotype could predict they share
Abraham as a
common ancestor as reported in the genealogy; but this result doesn't
totally rule out the possibility. The genealogy suggests Jonathan Stark
[the Elder] was a common ancestor; the genetic prediction improved to a
probability of 91%. The 96.94% genetic prediction Aaron Stark [the
Elder] was a common ancestor provides considerable confidence he was a
common ancestor of E & E1 as suggested by the genealogy.

FTDNA
reported on 05/10/2010, results for Markers 1 through 37. #176542 (E2)
has a genetic distance of 1 when compared to members of Group 1
having the most common H37 Haplotype. #1786542 has an allele value of 39
at Marker 35. All other members of Group 1 tested at Marker 35 have an
allele value of 38. When #1786542 us compared to those with the most
common H37 Haplotype, the probability that he shared a common ancestor
with these participants within the last 20 generations is 99.83%.
When
#176542 (E2) is compared to #165568 (E1), having the most common H37
haplotype —
and sharing Rev. Abraham Stark [1781-1857] as
a common ancestor within the last 7 generations —
the probability is 82.51% they share Abraham as a common ancestor within
7 generations; 87.4% they share Daniel Stark [1746-1810] as a common
ancestor within 8 generations; 91% they share Jonathan Stark [the elder]
as a common ancestor within 9 generations; 93.61% they share William
Stark (Junior) as a common ancestor within 10 generations; 95.5% they
share William Stark (Senior) as a common ancestor within 11 generations;
and 96.84% they share Aaron Stark [1608-1685] as a common ancestor
within 12 generations.
The
comparison of E1 and E2 over the H37 Haplotype provides
considerable confidence #176542 is a descendant of Aaron Stark
[1608-1685] and that his lineage to Stephen D. Stark [1808-1869]; and
from Stephen to Aaron Stark [1608-1685] is genealogically correct.

(F) was tested
by Sorenson Molecular Genetics Foundation and given the ID# used at http://www.ysearch.org.
The "-" in the results indicates
these markers were not available for comparison to the FTDNA markers
used in Panel 3. The lineage is based on his reported genealogy back to
R. Walter Stark. The connection to Aaron Stark through Rice A. Stark was
contributed by Gwen Boyer Bjorkman. Because Y-DNA results over
Markers 26 through 37 are not available for comparison to the FTDNA
markers, the following will only discuss the H25 Haplotype comparisons.
F
has a genetic distance of 1 when compared to the Group 1 most common H25 Haplotype.
When F is compared to those with the most
common H25 Haplotype, the probability they share a common
ancestor within the last 20 generations is 94.69%.
This probability estimate is based on a comparison
of #115456 (J) to the most common H25 Haplotype.
He
genetically is most likely a descendant of Aaron Stark [the Elder];
however, for now the genealogy cannot be genetically confirmed without
more genetic information.

The
H37 Haplotype comparison of #203166 to #171830 results in a genetic
distance of 12. The genealogy of both suggests Isaac Stark (Fort Ann,
Washington Co., New York) who married Betsey Shaw was their common
ancestor. This genetic comparison results in a 0% probability they share
Isaac Stark as a common ancestor within 5 to 7 generations. There is
only a 2.78% probability they share a common ancestor within 24
generations.
However,
#203166 only has a genetic distance of 1 from the Modal haplotype of
Group 1, descendants of Aaron Stark [1608- 1685]. In Group 1, #76234 has
the modal Haplotype. When compared to #203166, there is a 99.96%
probability they share a common ancestor within 20 generations, 97.37%
within 12 generations. There
is genealogical research that suggests Nathan Stark, who married Jemima
Farnsworth, was a son of Christopher Stark (Junior). The genetic distance between
#78078 and #203166 is 1. There is a 88.77% probability they share a
common ancestor who lived within 8 generations. Nathan Stark who married
Jemima Farnsworth lived in Granville, Washington County, New York after
the Revolutionary War and can be found at that place in the 1810 census.
According to a Revolutionary War Pension submitted by Jemima, Nathan
died in Granville in 1812. It is probable Isaac Stark could have been a
son of Nathan and Jemima. #203166
is presented in Subgroup 1A. His lineage has been presented as a
descendant of Nathan Stark and Jemima Farnsworth.

When
the H37 haplotype of #154414 is compared to #N17289, there is a
99.88% probability you share a common ancestor who lived within
20 generations. Assuming you are a descendant of William Stark
(Senior) through his son Christopher (Senior); and from the
genealogy reported by #N17289; he is a descendant of William
Stark (Senior) through his son Daniel [1702-1758]; then William
(Senior) was your most recent common ancestor who lived 9
generations earlier. There is a 92.13% probability you and #N17289
could have shared William (Senior) as a common ancestor who lived within
10 generations.
A
genealogical analysis suggests #154414's nearest relative in the project
is #N56748, a descendant of John Stark [1763-1841] who married Catherine
Neff November 11, 1786, in New York. This analysis suggests #154414 and
#N56748 share this individual as a most recent common ancestor.
Unfortunately, #N56748 only has results over 12 markers (H12
Haplotype) and a comparison over the H37 haplotype is not possible. The
nearest relative in the project having been tested over the H37
haplotype is #78078. Both most likely share Christopher Stark
(Junior) as a most recent common ancestor. Christopher (Junior) lived 7
generations earlier. When the H37 haplotype of #154414 is compared to
#78078, the genetic distance is 2 and there is a 88.79% probability
you could have shared Christopher (Junior) as a most recent common
ancestor who lived within 8 generations.
This is greater than my confidence threshold
of 85% and a positive sign Christopher (Junior) was indeed a most
recent common ancestor of both.
The
genealogical research continues for there is uncertainty the father
of William Edgar Starks was William P. Starks who married Sarah
Williamson or John Starks who married Sarah Williamson. Until proven
otherwise, the father of William Edgar will be shown as William P.
Starks in the lineage. |

dated 02/15/2010:
N66901 (N2) has the surname Kelly. Family tradition suggests g-grandfather changed surname
from Stark to Kelly. Thomas Benton Kelly married
Missouri Jane (Sheppard) Smith in 1887, her second marriage. Preliminary
research suggests T. B. Kelly was an alias and he may have been David
Franklin Stark, son of William A. Stark. William A. Stark may have been a
son of Isaac Starks of Clermont County, Ohio. There is a 98.72% probability
N66901 shares Aaron Stark [1608-1685] as a common ancestor when compared to
those with the most common H37 haplotype. Research continues.
Speculation
by Ben Riley Kelly
William
A. Stark (1824), father of David Franklin Stark, listed his birthplace
as Ohio and his father’s birthplace as New York. I began tracing
William Stark Senior’s (1664) descendants from New London, Connecticut
to Ohio. Christopher Stark Senior (1695), son of William Stark Senior,
had a son Christopher Stark Junior (1728) whose son John Stark (1763)
was born in Duchess County, New York; as was his son Isaac Starks
(1796). Isaac married Catherine Wollem in 1822 in Clermont, County,
Ohio. Given the state of birth control at that time and the emphasis on
having children, the first child would have been born 1823-1825. The
Family Sheet for Isaac Starks Lists several children, among those listed
are a William Starks. There are birth dates for the younger ones and not
for William or Isaac Junior. In the 1840 Census for Isaac Starks there
are 2 boys listed in the 16-20 year old category, 2 boys listed in the
10-15 year old category. I am assuming that William is one of those
listed. This William Starks is very likely the William Stark married to
Fidelia Ann and living in Highland County, Ohio in the 1850 Census.
Highland County is a short distance to the east of Clermont County,
Ohio. I believe that I have exhausted other possibilities for family
connections and through the process of elimination am left with this
connection. This connection helps to satisfiy several conditions that
would make David Franklin Stark a candidate to have changed his name and
become Thomas Benton Kelly.
David
Franklin would have had to had a good reason to change his name and
start his life over. David joined the US Army on March 13, 1875 and
deserted August 14, 1875. David would have changed his name then and
headed away from home to start a new life. Thomas Benton is found in
Southeast Missouri working for the Frisco Railroad in 1876. As work
moved west to Howell and Ozark County, Missouri on the Frisco, Thomas
moved with it. In Ozark County, he met and married Missouri Jane
Sheppard Smith, as work on the railroad moved west he moved with his
family to Cameron, Le Flore County, Indian Territory. Thomas was quite
the story teller, as evidenced by the Fellsmere Farmer article from
1912. He probably mixed fact and fiction to create a past to entertain
his children and so that anyone pursuing an army deserter would be
unable to find him. His wife and children probably heard the story that
he changed his name from Stark to Kelly and heard that his father was
William and his mother was Ann. Pretty consistently the “trouble”
that caused him to change his name occurred while he was living in
Illinois. He embellished and romanticized the “trouble” as being
anything from murdering a judge who sent him to prison to being disowned
by his family for marrying an “Indian squaw”. He probably
manufactured the latter to irritate Missouri Jane. He probably mentioned
that he had a brother named Jonathan and his name had been David
Franklin which later became the name Jonathan F. Stark as the name he
had changed from in my Aunt Effie’s (his daughter) Bible. Missouri
Jane probably discouraged the children from believing any of those old
stories.

Note:
Mr. 87105 was
a 35 of 37 match to the common haplotype for Group 1. See Group 1
remarks on the Analysis Highlights web page. His ancestry
back to Aaron Stark [1608-1685] is suggested by the research but not confirmed
from Andrew Starks to Reuben Starks. Richard Smith was adopted by his
step-father, which accounts for his
surname being Smith. |

Leaving
his wife and children in the care of Colonel Elias Edgerton, her father
or brother, Zephaniah Stark went to Nova Scotia about 176-, where he
received a grant of land embracing the township of Cornwallis. Not long
afterwards he took ship at Halifax to return to Connecticut and was
never again heard from.
[Pages
19 and 20 of the same publication had the following]
John
Stark is supposed to have gone to Nova Scotia with his two brothers, and
after the death of Zephaniah he returned to the States and settled in
Vermont.

Conflicts
with Charles R. Stark Publication
[Source:
1872 publication entitled "History of Rutland, Vermont,"
by Caverly. Comments related to Zephaniah Stark on page 202 of the
text.]
David
Starks was the son of Zephaniah who was born in England, came to
America when a young man, married Martha Edgerton of Conn., and located
in that state. They had two children, David and Eunice, born in
Connecticut. The father died on the voyage to Nova Scotia; the mother
died in Nova Scotia. David, born in 1765, bought one hundred and ten
acres of land in Pittsford in 1783, which land included the farm now
owned by Hawkins Hart. He made a clearing, built a house, and married
Jennie*, daughter of Stephen Mead of Pittsford, in 1785. Mr. Starks died
in this town in 1805; Mrs. Starks died in Buffalo, N. Y., in 1834."
*footnote: Jennie Mead was the first female child born in Manchester
(1767).
=====================
Comments:
The genealogy suggest #76667 is a descendant of Zephaniah Stark and
Zephaniah's Father, William Stark (Junior). The H37 haplotype of #76667
was genetically compared to that of #48711 (Subgroup 1A), a known
descendant of William Stark (Junior). Their genetic distance was 15.
There is a .12% probability they share a common ancestor who lived
within the last 20 generations. The odds greatly favor that they have
not shared a common male ancestor within thousands of years making
it impossible William Stark (Junior) was a common ancestor of
#76667 and #48711. Either the 1872 publication
entitled "History of Rutland, Vermont," by Caverly,
reporting Zephaniah was born in England, is correct as genetically
suggested; or there was a non-paternal event in the generation of
William (Junior); or in one of the generations that follows. Genetic
results from a second descendant of Zephaniah could resolve this issue
in the future. Finally, there could be an error in the genealogy
presented. |

DAVID
STARK appears to have been a brother of Jonathan Stark, and was a
minister in the same church, in Oldham county, as early as 1812, and
perhaps several years earlier. Floyd's Fork church was made up largely
of the Stark family. These moving away from year to year, gradually
reduced the church, till it numbered, in 1815, only 13 members. David
Stark continued to minister to it, doubtless with the hope of building
it up again, till the above named period, when he followed his kindred
to Indiana, and the forsaken little church dissolved.

Comments: The genealogical research of
# 84645 Stark reveals with reasonable accuracy he is a descendant of David Stark of Scott
County;
reported by the genealogy to be a son of Daniel Stark [1746-1810]. Daniel
Stark had a son named Jonathan D. Stark. The genealogy suggests #84645
shares Aaron Stark [1608-1685] as a common ancestor. The H25 haplotype
of #
84645 was genetically compared to that of #16335 (Subgroup
IA), a known
descendant of Jonathan D. Stark [1768-1828]. Their genetic distance was
6. There is a 12.98% probability they share a common ancestor who lived
within the last 20 generations. The odds greatly favor they have not
shared a common male ancestor in excess of 5,000 years. This
suggests David Stark may have been a member of a unrelated Stark family
living in Kentucky, rather than a son of Daniel Stark; or there was a
non-paternal event in the generation of Daniel [1746-1810] or one of the
generations that follows. Genetic results from a second descendant of
David could resolve this issue in the future.
