Biographical Notes on Martha Ann Stark,
by Clovis La Fleur, July 2000
According to the 1860 census for Newton County, Texas,
A. C. Terry was married to M. A., age 19 and had a son
William who was 2 years old. They were married May 19,
1855 in Newton County. According to the 1870 census
for Newton County, Texas, Martha was born in 1840 in
Texas. According to the 1880 census, Martha and a son
Isaac are not living with the family of Aaron Terry. I
would have to conclude she and Isaac died some time
between 1870 and 1880. See the census data which
follows. In two of the census years, 1860 and 1880,
William is reported to have been born in Louisiana. I
suspect this is probably correct. They also had a
daughter named Mary E. Terry who was born in 1868 or
1869, depending on which age is correct in the 1870
census [Age recorded as 2 years] or the 1880 census
[Age recorded as 11 years]. In the 1870 census, Aaron
Terry and Martha Ann Stark lived next door to Martha's
father, William Hawley Stark. Isaac's death between
1870 and 1880 is most likely confirmed on page 34 of
the Thomas Wilson Text titled, "Some Early
Southeast Texas Families." He wrote; " Aaron
Terry was a tall, lean man, and he lived near Stark's
Landing on the Sabine River in Newton County. He had
one son named Billie and another son was killed by a
rattlesnake bite when a boy." Billie was probably
the son named William in the census data while Isaac
was the son who died from a rattlesnake bite between
1870 and 1880.
