Appendix 1: Defining the Ancestral Haplotype of Aaron Stark [1608-1685]
Introduction
The genealogical research suggests Aaron Stark I [1608-1685] was the common ancestor of all of the members in the genetic program. Using the genetic data, the triangulation method devised by Charles F. Kerchner, Jr. will be employed to define the P37 Ancestral Haplotype of Aaron Stark I. (See Charles F. Kerchner, Jr.'s article entitled "Triangulation Method for Deducing the Ancestral Haplotype in Y-DNA Surname Projects.")
A typical line of descent chart looks like a triangle, with the ancestor at the apex, as illustrated below.

For example, Aaron Stark [1608-1685] had two sons. If we create a descendant chart, the shape would be similar to a triangle. The analyzer, by looking from the bottom generation of the chart towards the ancestor --- from different descendant locations on the descendant chart --- is triangulating towards the target, the common ancestor, Aaron Stark [1608-1685]. Kerchner defines this technique as triangulation.
The triangulation rules are quite simple and can be stated as follows:
1. If two genetically compared males having the same surname are direct line descendants of two known and different sons of a father --- and --- they both have the same allele value at a specific DYS marker, then by deduction, we presume the father of the two sons had the same allele value at that DYS marker.
2. If two genetically compared males having the same Surname are direct line descendants of two known and different sons of a father --- and --- they both have the same allele value at a specific DYS marker, then by deduction, we presume all individuals in their respective descendant branches from the Father have the same allele value at that DYS Marker.
3. If two genetically compared males having the same surname are direct line descendants of two known and different sons of a father --- and --- neither has the same value at a specific DYS marker, then the allele value of the father cannot be determined; nor can the allele value of individuals in the respective descendant branches be determined; the exception in each branch being the known allele value of the genetically compared Males.
The Genetic Test Results Table indicates all of the Program Members have matching allele values at 29 out of 37 DYS markers. Because all of the lines of descent from Aaron Stark [1608-1685] have the same allele values at these markers, we must conclude Aaron I had the same allele values at these markers. Table 1 illustrates these allele values have been assigned to the Ancestral Haplotype of Aaron Stark I.
One or more Kit #'s, however, have DYS allele values that differ from the more common allele values and have the symbol "--" in that column. The markers in question are: DYS-393; DYS-439; DYS-449; DYS-464d; DYS-460; DYS-456; DYS-576; and DYS-CDYa. One member had a value at DYS-464e which does not commonly occur in Panel 2. That individual has a one-step mutation relative to those not having an allele value. It now remains to individually analyze each of these DYS markers to determine which of the differing allele values are mutations and which are to be assigned to the Ancestral Haplotype.

DYS-393 Marker
[The DYS-393 allele values can be reviewed at the Genetic Results Table.]
The test results reveal F, R, & S have an allele value of 12 at DYS-393. All other program participants have an allele value of 13. Table 2 is a replication of the Member Lineage Table. Members Kit#'s having an allele value of 13 have this background color. Members Kit#'s having an allele value of 12 have this background color. The triangulation method was used to determine the allele value of generations previous to the Members known allele value. Table 2 illustrates the direct lines of descent having the DYS-393 allele values of 12 or 13 using the same background colors. The number of Unique Transmission Events (Births) in a generation can be found under the Gen number for that column. A UTE occurs when the Y-DNA of the Father is transmitted to his son. In each generation, the total births are the sum of all of the individuals listed in that Gen column. The total number of Births in Table 2 is presented in the Gen12 column.

Observe A, B, and C have an allele value of 13. Triangulation has determined Jonathan J. Stark (Gen 7) most likely had the same allele value and his cell has been assigned this background color; as have all of Jonathan's descendants to and including A, B, and C. The father of Jonathan J. Stark, James (Gen 8) has also been assigned this background color. Although there is only one known son of James with descendants having genetic results — there are three descendant branches having James as a common ancestor suggesting James most likely had the same allele value at DYS 393. The same would apply to Christopher Stark (Gen 10).
Observe F has an allele value of 12 and has been assigned this background color. The progenitor of the descendant branch is William (Gen 6). William and all of his descendants, except for F, have been assigned this background color because their allele value cannot be determined by triangulation. We know a mutation occurred along the branch, we just cannot determine which father to son transmission of the allele value of 12 was the source of the mutation.
Observe R and S have an allele value of 12. They are descendants of two know and different sons of Ebenezer Stark (Gen 8). Triangulation suggests Ebenezer had the allele value 12 and his cell has been assigned this background color. Triangulation, therefore, suggests all members of the descendant branches from Ebenezer to and including R and S, had the allele value of 12. This mutation occurred as a result of the possible — but not known with certainty — transmission of the value 12 from Stephen II (Gen 9) to Ebenezer. Therefore, rather than counting R and S as two mutations, there was only one mutation — most likely the source being Ebenezer. Because there was no mutation along the descendant branches from Reuben (Gen 7) and Norman S. (Gen 7) to R & S, these cells do not have a mutation relative to Ebenezer and have this background color.
Throughout this analysis of each of the DYS Markers having mutations, the above four colors will be used to identify those with the most common allele value; those having the less common allele value or values; those having a less common allele value, but the result of a earlier mutation; and those whose allele value cannot be determined with certainty.
Using triangulation, can Table 2 demonstrate Aaron I (Gen 12) had the allele value of 13, as illustrated in Table 2.
1. Abraham (Gen 7) has two known and different sons with descendants having the value 13, therefore, Abraham had the value 13.
2. Daniel (Gen. 8) has two known and different sons with descendants having the value 13, therefore, Daniel had the allele value 13.
3. Jonathan (Gen 9) has four known and different sons with descendants having the value 13, therefore, Jonathan had the allele value 13.
4. William, Jr. (Gen 10) has three known and different sons with descendants having the value 13, therefore, William, Jr. had the allele value 13.
5. William, Sr. (Gen 11) has two known and different sons with descendants having the value 13, therefore, William, Sr. had the allele value 13.
6. Abiel 1st (Gen 10) has two known and different sons with descendants having the value 13, therefore, Abiel 1st had the allele value 13.
7. Aaron II (Gen 11) has two known and different sons with descendants having the value 13, therefore, Aaron II had the allele value 13
8. Aaron I (Gen 12) has two known and different sons with descendants having the value 13, therefore, Aaron I had the allele value 13.
Having illustrated the use of the lineage table and triangulation to determine an ancestral allele value at a specific DYS Marker, let us now proceed to an analysis of the other DYS Markers with observed mutations.
Page 3
DYS-439 Marker
[The DYS-439 allele value can be reviewed at the Genetic Results Table.]
Table 3 illustrates the analysis of DYS-439. The Genetic results reveal J had a allele value of 11 at DYS-439. All other members have an allele value of 12. Using the lineage table and triangulation suggests Aaron 1 had an allele value of 12. The progenitor of the descendant branch to J was Joseph (Gen 8). Because the descendant branch from Joseph to J is from only one known son, the allele value of all members of this branch cannot be determined except for the known value of J.

DYS-449 Marker
[The Test Results can be reviewed at Genetic Results Table.]
Table 4 illustrates the analysis of DYS-449. This marker is located in Panel 2. Members I, N, and S were only tested over the Panel 1 markers and have no genetic results in Panel 2. Therefore, they are not relevant to the Analysis of DYS- 449 nor to the analysis of other markers beyond Panel 1. Therefore, in Table 4, those cells associated with these Members have this background color. Observe these cells begin with the descendant branch progenitor and concludes with the tested member. In Panel 2, for the purpose of analysis, these cells are ignored.
The results reveal C and L have an allele value of 30 at DYS-449. All other members have an allele value of 29. Triangulation suggests Aaron I had an allele value of 29. By observation, it is clear these are two independent occurring mutations along non-connecting descendant branches. Although Moses (Gen 6) — the common ancestor of A and B — clearly has an allele value of 29, the value of his brother, Enoch (Gen 6), cannot be determined.
UTE's of those cells with a black background are subtracted from the totals presented in the Panel 1 Markers for there were no test results available and are not relevant to the analysis.

DYS-464d Marker
[The Test Results can be reviewed at the Genetic Results Table.]
Table 5 illustrates the analysis of Marker DYS-464e. The test results reveal T has an allele value of 18 at DYS-464d. All other members have an allele value of 17. Triangulation suggests Aaron I had an allele value of 17. The progenitor of the descendant branch to T was Aaron III (Gen 10). Because the descendant branch from Aaron III to T is from only one known son, the allele value of all members of this branch cannot be determined except for the known value of T.
UTE's of those cells with a black background are subtracted from the totals presented in the Panel 1 Markers for there were no test results available and are not relevant to the analysis.

DYS-464e
[The Test Results can be reviewed at the Genetic Results Table.]
Table 6 Illustrates the analysis of DYS-464e. According to FTDNA, 1.5% of their total tested population will have an allele value at DYS-464e, DYS-464f, and DYS-464g. Member R had an allele value at this marker; while no other members had an allele value. FTDNA reports when there is the existence of a value at one of the markers, then a one-step mutation has occurred. The amount of the value is not of importance, only the existence of a value.
The test results reveal R has an allele value of 17 at DYS-464e. All other members have no value reported at DYS-464e. Triangulation suggests Aaron I did not have an allele value at DYS-464e. The progenitor of the descendant branch to R was Stephen I (Gen 10). Because the descendant branch from Stephen I to R is from only one known son, it cannot be determined if any other member of this branch, accept for R; had an allele value at DYS-464e.
UTE's of those cells with a black background are subtracted from the totals presented in the Panel 1 Markers for there were no test results available and are not relevant to the analysis.

DYS-460 Marker
[The Test Results can be reviewed at the Genetic Results Table.]
Table 7 illustrates the analysis of DYS-460. This marker is located in Panel 2. Members G, I, N, Q, and S were not tested beyond the Panel 1 and 2 markers; and have no genetic results in Panel 3. Therefore, they are not relevant to the Analysis of DYS- 460 nor to the analysis of any other markers beyond Panel 2.
The genetic results reveal L had an allele value of 12 at DYS-460. All other members had an allele value of 11. Triangulation suggests Aaron I had an allele value of 11. The progenitor of the descendant branch to L was William III (Gen 9). Because the descendant branch from William III to L is from only one known son, the allele value of all members of this branch cannot be determined except for the known value of L.
UTE's of those cells with a black background are subtracted from the totals presented in the Panel 1 Markers for there were no test results available and are not relevant to the analysis.

DYS-CDYa Marker
[The Test Results can be reviewed at the Genetic Results Table.]
Table 10 illustrates the analysis of DYS-CDYa. This marker is located in Panel 3. Members G, I, N, Q, and S were not tested beyond the Panel 1 and 2 markers; and have no genetic results in Panel 3. Added to this list was F. Although some markers of F in Panel 3 are available for analysis, this marker is one that has no test results because F was tested by Sorenson. Therefore, in this case, F is not relevant to the analysis of DYS-CDYa. UTE's of those cells with a black background are subtracted from the totals presented in the Panel 1 Markers for there were no test results available and they are not relevant to the analysis.
