Clovers Leaving the UK

There is an interesting new site for those interested in passenger lists.  This site is in conjunction with the UK National Archives.  They are working on indexing records of outbound ships. If you don't find your name, look again later because they are adding to the site regularly.  As it happens, you can search the index for Clovers before deciding if it is likely to have been your Clover. There is a charge for the actual records.  http://www.ancestorsonboard.com

Joseph Thomas Clover was born 1825, England, died 1882, England, buried at Aylsham Church, Norfolk, England.  He was a scientist and considered the "Father of modern anaesthetics". In 1862 he developed the first apparatus to provide chloroform in controlled concentrations. Clover devised a "portable regulating ether-inhaler" in 1877. He administered chloroform or ether anaesthesia to many thousands of patients - from which only one direct fatality is known.

This is still another Joseph Clover typed by Pat Vaseska:

Clover, Joseph (1725 – 1811), farrier, son of a blacksmith at Norwich (England), was born in that city on 12 Aug. 1725, and followed for many years in his father’s calling.  About 1750 he attracted the notice of Dr. Kervin Wright, a fellow-townsman, by whom he was encouraged to apply himself to the investigation and treatment of the diseases of horses.  By dint of extraordinary application he so far mastered Latin and French as to be able to read in the original the best authors on farriery and medicine, particularly Vegetius and LaFosse.  He also became a good mathematician.  In 1765 his reputation had increased so much that he left off working at the forge to devote himself entirely to veterinary practice.  In this he was assisted by many well-known medical men of that day, especially by Mr. Benjamin Gooch, the surgeon, who inserted in his ‘Cases and Practical Remarks in Surgery’ a letter from Clover, giving a description and a drawing of a machine invented by him for the cure of ruptured tendons and fractured legs in horses.  As early as 1753 he had discovered the manner in which the larvae of the bots are conveyed from the coat of the horse into the stomach.  Ill health obliged him to decline business in 1781.  He died at Norwich on 19 Feb. 1811.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drinkstone_windmills

Drinkstone post mill was built in 1689, making it the oldest windmill in Suffolk. Samuel Clover was given the post mill, horse mill and mill house by his father (Samuel Sr) in 1775. The mill passed to his son (Samuel Jr, b1752) and thence through a succession of Clovers’ to Wilfred, who took the mill on the death of his father Daniel in 1947. On 28 February 1949 the mill was tailwinded, damaging the sails and fantail. The mill became derelict until Mr Clover restored it in 1962 and put her back to work.

The following newspaper items are all from the New York Times about a sensational series of murders in London. Thanks to Pat Vaseska for typing these for me.

NEILL AND HIS VICTIMS
The woman poisoner said to have made a confession
LONDON, Oct. 23.  – The news of the World declares that it is in a position to state that Neill, the domed woman poisoner, in an interview in jail confessed that he poisoned Matilda Clover.  Emma Shrivell, and Alice Marsh, but declared that  he had not poisoned Ellen Donworth and said that up to the last moment he had had a feeling that he would be acquitted.
Since he was sentenced Neill asked to be allowed, before the day set for his execution, to see Laura Sabbatine, to whom he was engaged to be married.

THOMAS NEILL HAVGED
Confession made by the murderer of Matilda Clover
London, Nov. 15.  – Thomas Neill, the murderer of Matilda Clover and other girls, was hanged in Newgate Prison at 9 o’clock this morning.  He made no confession.  Death appeared to be instantaneous.
All of Neill’s life was marked with crime, and yet he would never have been known as the murderer of the last two women he poisoned had he not attempted to blackmail a number of people, all of whom he charged with having committed the crime, which he himself committed.  Thus, he drew attention to himself.
He was tried and convicted for poisoning Alice Marsh and Emma Srivell April11.  That night these two women received a man in their apartments, 11S Stanford Street, Lambeth.  The man remained with the girls until 2 o’clock the next morning and soon after he went, away both were taken violently ill and they died sometime after.  It was found that they had been poisoned by strychnine.  About the time the girls died a letter was received by the police stating that the writer had information to prove that the two women had been poisoned by a man named Harper.  At the same time, the police discovered that Dr. Harper of Barnstaple had received a letter, admitted to have been sent by Neill in which he demanded £1,500, intimating that unless the money was forthcoming the writer would give information that Dr. Harper’s son had poisoned the two women.
Neill was then arrested on a charge of blackmail.  Interest in the case then heightened by the fact that a local newspaper published a story that Matilda Clover had died under the same circumstances a year previous as the Marsh and Srivell women.  At the of the time of the death of Matilda Clover, Neill had written to Lady Russell, during her suit for separation from her husband, accusing Earl Russell with having poisoned the clover girl.  Attempts were made to blackmail Dr. Broadbent, a well-known London practitioner, and the Hon. W. F. D. Smith.
Neill’s life and history were hunted up, and it was found that he was a Canadian who had been sentenced to many years’ imprisonment for causing a woman’s death by malpractice in Chicago.  He was pardoned after serving thirteen years.  He caused the death, it was alleged, of several other women in Canada, but the facts could never be proved against him.
Neill was tried for the murder of Matilda Clover and was convicted of murder in the first degree; the jury was not out five minutes.  The evidence was purely circumstantial, but there was not the slightest doubt in any one’s mind that the verdict was a just one.

DR. GRAHAM HELD FOR TRIAL
For giving a false certificate as to the cause of
Matilda Clover’s Death
LONDON, January 7 – Dr. Robert Graham was to-day committed for trial on the charge of having given false certificate of the death of Matilda Clover.
The proceedings against Dr. Graham were taken under the registration of births and deaths act of 1874.  That act made it compulsory for duly qualified medical man, on the medical list, to give a certificate setting forth to the best of his knowledge and belief the cause of the death of any patient he had attended during his or her last illness.  Anyone who gave a false certificate was liable on summary conviction to a fine of £10, or in case of conviction on indictment to penal servitude for seven years.  In this case the person in respect to whose death a certificate was given was Matilda Clover, one of the victims of Neill Creain, who was executed a short time ago.  Defendant is a fully qualified medical man, living in Upper Kennington Lane.  Matilda Clover died on October 22 of last year.  It is now known that her death was due to strychnine poisoning.  She was taken ill in the night, and after undergoing extreme agony, died in the morning.  Death took place at her lodgings, South Lambeth Pond.  During the night Mrs. Voles, the landlady, went for Dr. Graham, but he was out.  Later on, she called again.  He was then in, but was too busy to attend to Miss Clover and recommended her to go for a medical man whose name he mentioned.  The landlady did so and a Mr. Coppin, an unqualified man, attended Miss Clover just prior to her death.  Being unqualified, he was unable to give a certificate.  Accordingly, Dr. Graham was called upon to do so.  He went to the house on the afternoon of deceased’s death.  The servant girl, Lucy Rhodes, described to him the suffering that the deceased underwent prior to her death, and said that before she expired she attributed her illness to pills given to her by a man named Fred.  Dr. Graham had previously attended Miss Clover, who was undoubtedly addicted to intemperance.  After hearing all, the servant girl and the landlady had to say, defendant signed a certificate to the effect that he saw Miss Clover on October 22, the day on which she expired, and that to the best of his knowledge and belief death was due to alcoholism and syncope.  This certificate concealed the cause of death for a long time, until Cream’s own remarks led to suspicion and detection.

Albert Clover of Melford was charged with unlawfully depositing excrement upon the footpath adjoining the turnpike road at Melford to the annoyance of persons travelling thereon.
Defendant said he could not help it as he was suffering from diarrhoea. The Bench said there were great complaints made of such nuisances and hoped this would be a caution.
