North Dakota Censuses
The Dakota Territory was organized in 1861 and included all of
what is now North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming and Montana.
Settlers began to come to the area after the first Homestead Act which
gave free land to settlers. But settlement was delayed by the
Civil War and the Indian wars. in 1864, the Montana Territory was
organized which included what is now Montana and Wyoming. The
Dakota Territory was divided into North Dakota and South Dakota in
1873, but North Dakota did not become a state until 1889.
Consequently, the earliest censuses for this area is for the
Dakota Territory. There are no Clovers in the index for 1860.
