There is a question as to the spelling of this name. I have not
seen the actual entry. I think it may be Darden.
Marriages
from South East Missouri Counties.
www.vienici.com This
is a wonderful marriage website which includes Jefferson County as well
as some other counties. I highly recommend that you check this for any
other surnames that you are interested in. And they do regular updates
so don't assume that I have all the Clovers here. Thanks to Gary
Null for pointing this site out to me.

ENCYCLOPEDIA
Of THE HISTORY of ST. LOUIS
A Compendium of History and Biography
for Ready Reference
VOL I – 1899
The Southern History Company
Pages 412 – 413
Clover, Henry A.,
lawyer and jurist, was born March 13, 1824, in the city of New York,
son of Lewis P and Bridget Clover. He was educated at Forest
& Milligan’s School, and at Columbia College of New York
City, and in the early spring of 1844 came to St. Louis. He
arrived at the time of the flood of that year, when steamboats landed
at the second floors of warehouses on the levee, and steamboats made
trips to the bluffs in the American Bottoms. Soon after his
arrival, he became deputy clerk of the circuit court, when John Ruland
was clerk of that court, John M. Krum, circuit judge, and William
Milburn, sheriff. There was but one judge of the circuit court at
that time, a court of common pleas being also n existence, with Peter
H. Engle and later Montgomery Blair also captain of the uniform militia
company called the Montgomery Guards – on the bench in that
court. He had studied law before coming to St. Louis with the
firm of Graham & Samdfords, a very prominent New York law firm, and
after serving as a clerk of the court for two or three years he was
admitted to the bar and began the practice of his profession, which he
has continued up to the present time, except while serving on the
bench. He has appeared as counsel in many noted cases and has
long been known as one of the accomplished, capable and high –
minded lawyers of St. Louis. In the spring of 1849, memorable as
the year in which St. Louis suffered from an epidemic of cholera, and
was also visited by a great fire, he was elected city attorney on the
Democratic ticket. In 1850, he was nominated for the same office
by the Benton wing of the Democratic Party, but was defeated by reason
of the split in his party. In 1852, he was nominated on the
Democratic ticket for circuit attorney, and made the race for that
office against James R. Lackland, who was the Wig nominee. Mr.
Clover was elected by a handsome majority at the end of a hotly –
contested campaign, and served until 1856, when he was elected member
of the General Assembly of Missouri, on a general ticket, which bore
the names of such men as Francis P. Blair, B. Gratz Brown, Samuel
Breckinridge and others, who achieved unusual distinction. At the
end of the first session of this assembly, Mr. Clover resigned from the
Legislature, he having been nominated and elected judge of the criminal
court of St. Louis County. He held this office seven years, and
was then appointed by Mayor James S. Thomas city counselor. In
1865, he was elected a delegate to the State Constitutional Convention
of that year, in which he served as chairman of the committee on
judiciary. As chairman of this committee, he reported and
procured the adoption into the Constitution of what was known as
“The Ousting Ordinance.” He opposed what was known as
the test oath clause of the Constitution adopted, and for this reason
did not attach his signature to that instrument, which has passed into
history as the “Drake Constitution.” In 1865, he was
commissioned by Governor Fletcher judge of the Supreme Court, but
declined the appointment. The position of delegate to the
Constitutional Convention was the last public office, which he held,
his entire time and attention having since been devoted to professional
labors. Originally, a Democrat, he became a
“Free-Soiler,” and subsequently a Republican, and has
affiliated with the last-named political organization since
Fremont’s candidacy for the residence, in 1856. Judge
Clover married, in 1850, Miss Bettie Bohannon, of Jefferson City,
Missouri.
Rhonda
Clover sent me the following two items which are certainly
tantalizing. Remember that Arkansas was part of what of the
Missouri Territory at that time. Following the Louisiana Purchase,
negative rumors circulated about Governor Wilkinson. The
residents of the St. Louis area showed their support for
Wilkinson by sending letters to the president. This collection is
called the Wilkinson Memorial. The residents who signed the
letters lived in St. Louis, St. Charles (SC), St. Ferdinand (SF),
and Ste. Genevieve (SG). In addition, residents from Cape
Girardeau and New Madrid areas of the Louisiana Territory are
included; however, Cape Girardeau and New Madrid residents are
not indicated by a location designation. John Clover signed but
no location was given suggesting that he was in the Cape
Girardeau or New Madrid area about 1805. http://stlgs.org/DBgovernmentCensusMoTerritory1805.htm
The signature of John Clover was in section 11 of the list
of signers of the 1810 petition of land owners who feared losing
their land because of the legal changes after the Louisiana
Purchase. The entiire record was on line at one point but the link is
now broken. I cannot find it again. If anyone has access to
the actual records, please let me know.
The lists, containing 986 signatures of Missouri Pioneers in the
year 1810, copied from the Territorial
Papers of the United
States, Vol. XIV,
Louisiana-Missouri Territory, 1806-1814, pages
382-397. Compiled by Clarence Edwin Carter, U.S. Gov. Printing
Office, 1949.
These two records are tantalizing because they tell us that a
John Clover was west of the Mississippi River by 1805.
We
know that the John Clover and Tabitha, his wife, signed a deed in
Monroe County on 17 July 1818. Did
he move back to Monroe
County after 1810? Is
this another John Clover? At the
present time, I do not think any conclusions can be drawn.
Nevertheless,
it suggests that we need to do more research in these areas.

Couple
Celebrates 60th Anniversary By Reenacting the Reception
By: Karen Cernich
07/29/2009
James Weiskopf and Dorothy Clover were married May 7, 1949, at St.
Francis Borgia Church in Washington. After the ceremony, the family met
at the Kohmueller House for a chicken dinner reception. Sixty
years later, the family returned to the historic homestead to celebrate
Jim and Dot's anniversary the same way. A chicken dinner was served and
the couple, seated under an arbor on the lawn, renewed their vows.
The Kohmueller homestead is special to Dorothy's family because they
lived there for four years from 1947 to 1951. A Dewey and Lydia Clover
rented the house from the Kohmuellers. Lydia and Mrs. Louis Kohmueller
were cousins. The idea to celebrate the Weiskopfs' 60th anniversary at
the homestead where they had their reception came up after the couple
were driving around "their old stomping grounds" with their son, Jim,
and his family as a way to encourage them to tell "their story."
"They grew up in Franklin County and met when my mother and her family
lived in Washington," recalled ?. "They were married at St Francis
Borgia and we found out that day that they went back to this house and
farm for the chicken dinner after their wedding. We thought it would be
nice to 're-create' that event."
The Weiskopfs lived most of their life in Bel Ridge but several years
ago moved to Lake St. Louis. They have six children all married, 13
grandchildren and two great-grandchildren:
Debbie (and Dean) Lawler from Bel Aire, Md., and their three children,
Shannon, Brandon (Kerri and their daughter Kailyn) and Shane Lawler;
Connie (and Tom) Prendergast from St Peters and their two children,
Jeff Prendergast and Erin (and Stan) Ponder; Diana (and Bob) Kester
from St Charles and their two children Sarah (and Andrew) Brubaker and
Charis Kester and her daughter Ellie; Jim (and Mary) Weiskopf from
Ferguson and their two children, Eileen and Michael Weiskopf; Monica
(and Jim) Barnes from St Charles and their two children, Ryan and
Michaela Barnes; and
Brad and Anna Weiskopf from
Chesterfield and their two children, Isabella and Nicolas Weiskopf.
About 100 people attended the anniversary celebration. Some came from
as far away as Baltimore and Alabama, but most relatives still live in
the Franklin County area. In addition to celebrating the
Weiskopfs' anniversary, many of the relatives enjoyed getting a tour of
the Kohmueller house, which is under the care of Washinton Preservation
Inc. Dorris Keeven-Franke, president of the nonprofit group, gave
relatives a tour of the circa 1878 home, which has been carefully
restored to its original design.
A couple of the Clover family relatives who lived in the house shared
their memories of the property as well. "I remember how we had to
walk through the woods to get up to Fifth Street," said Ruth (Clover)
Marquart. "And if it rained, you couldn't get to the house because the
road in was a dirt road.
"I had a date once and when I told him I would walk home, he said, 'No,
I'll drive you.' I told him he was going to get stuck, and he did."
When the Clover family lived in the house, they slept upstairs, said
Marquart, noting the space was unfinished. "In the winter, there was no
heat and all the nail heads would frost over . . . we didn't sleep in
much." Looking at the house today, the Clovers commented on how
some things were the same and others, different.
"The smokehouse is changed, and the lake wasn't here - that was all
field," said Betty (Clover) Stuesse. "We always entered from up there
where the Y is now."
It had been years since the Clovers were back at the Kohmueller
homestead, and Dot (Clover) Weiskopf had forgotten how small the home
really was. "When I look at that house, I don't know how my parents had
enough room to cook the food and serve everyone (for the original
reception in 1949)," she said. "It's really just the two rooms, because
we didn't serve anything outside.
"If Mom and Dad could realize this became an historic site, they
wouldn't believe it," she remarked. "It was really pretty rustic when
we were here."
The Weiskopf anniversary celebration was the first private event held
at the Kohmueller homestead, and Keeven-Franke said she hopes more
people will consider it for other activities.
