Obituaries

Obituary of Louisa Abagail CLOVER-WILCOX (Pine City Newspaper, Dec 1921)
(she died Dec. 25, 1921.) Pine City is in Pine County, Minnisota
Thanks to Carol Wilcox for sending me this:
GRANDMA WILCOX CALLED BY DEATH
"Mrs. Louisa Wilcox, Mother of Judge Robert Wilcox, passed away at the home of  her son at Pine City, Christman morning at 4:30, the end coming very quietly. She suffered a paralytic stroke three weeks ago last Tuesday when the left side was paralyzed, and since that time has been confined to her bed. This was the only serious illness during her life, never having been sick over a few days at a time. She had been in good health up until the stroke, and was able to be around and take care of herself although she had a dizzy spell Nov. 1st, when  it was discovered her heart was weak.
Funeral services were held from the Presbyterian Church of which she had been a member for many years, Tuesday morning at 10:30 by Rev. Buckton, and the remains taken to Sunrise, where they were laid to rest beside those of her
husband and three children who preceded her.  The pall bearers were: Julius DOSEY, Robert GRENG, Robert DERR, Otto BECKER, George PAYNE, and J.B. BUTLER.
Louise A. CLOVER was born in New York State, Nov 28, 1838, and was united in marriage to Oliver WILCOX in that state April 22, 1857. soon after their marriage they moved to Sunrise, MN, where they lived on a farm for 14 years, where four of their children were born, three of whom died and are buried in the Sunrise Cemetery. They moved to Pine City in 1871, fifty years ago,..... where they operated a hotel for a number of years. Her husband passed away at Pine City in September 1907.. Besides her son, she leaves two sisters and one brother. Mrs. Charlotte BROWNING of Cloquet, Mrs. Mary SAYERS of Harris and Charles CLOVER of Dundas, Rice, MN.
Mrs. Wilcox was one of the pioneers of Pine City, and has seen the village grow from a small inland town, to the most prosperous and thriving little city in this part of the state. We, of this younger generation can hardly picture conditions as they were fifty years ago--- a half century. There were Indians in those days, the telephone unknown, railroads were fast beginning to branch out into the new territory, freight was brought in over the old Government road east of town from Stillwater, or by "prairie schooner". Oxen and mules were the main motive power then.
In 1871, Pine City consisted of a little over 200 population. There was a stave and sawmill, 2 hotels and 3 general stores. Ther railroad put through and the depot built two years before the WILCOX's came in 1869. They built a lodging house, where the Parish Boo (???) sheds stand today and later executed the residence where Mrs. Wilcox passed away. At that time Pine City was practically a woods. The school house block and other adjacent was a black ash swamp. The first town was "Chengwantana, until the depot built, which started the growth of Pine City.
Of those that were here when the Wilcox's arrived few are living here today among them are: Julius Dosey, James Hurley, and George Payne. Julius Dosey came her June 15, 1868 and upon arrival of the Wilcoxes the following year he went to work for them cutting logs on the hill between Devil and Squaw Lakes. W.F. Glasgow and the late A.H. Lambert came in 1872, William Tierny in 1873, Fred Hodge in 1876 and A. Pennington in 1881. Al Kaelble was working on the railroad through here at the time. Two of those, Juliuis Dosey and George Payne who were here in 1871, and welcomed her to the pioneer settlement helped the other old friends bear her body to the final resting place. Could they but picture the difference, between today and then? Fifty years ago practically a wilderness. It was the sturdy pioneers such as this one for whom they are performing the last sad rites that "blazed the trail" and made possible the city of today."
